1.
what's the age of your band? I'm afraid with very few exceptions bands tend to attract the same age group as themselves and older folk, generally, aren't interested in new music, I've said it before, but as rule of thumb, if you've not 'made it' by the time you're 30 it's very unlikely that you will. That's not to say you shouldn't make new music, but it'll be only for yourself and a few followers, my band are working on our next CD but I don't really expect to sell more than a few hundred.
I thin k you are probably correct on this, we do accept that age is against us and to be fair this project was based around recording the best music we could and if we got some decent gigs out of it then that was an additional bonus, so we didn't bring a crowd, no surprise (we actually stepped in last minute to fill a hole, so couldn't really promote it in advance, not that it would have made much difference if we had!) but we played with a young post hardcore band (whatever that may be!) on their first European tour who to some extent are relying on merchandising sales to fund the tour and a truly phenomenal Australian beat box performer who just blew my mind! It is not as if the event didn't have diversity and appeal. What does annoy me is people moaning locally that "you're always playing in Leicester" (20 miles away so hardly the other side of the world) so when we do play locally and invite those that moaned they still can't be bothered to get off their lazy asses and attend. I know I can play in a covers band and trot out the much hated Sex On Fire to our hearts content but what are the next generation of covers bands going to have to pick from if there is no one creating new music that anyone is interested in?
2. How does the current guy gel with the rest of the band? Bands are about what all of the members bring to the table, change one member and you change the whole band and if it is a band that gets on well as a unit sometimes bringing in an "outsider" does not improve the band. My old covers band had an inexperienced drummer who developed as the band went on but was never going to be viewed as an excellent drummer, he took a year out as he had got to the point where he wanted to do other things, we brought in a far more experienced drummer who on paper should have made us sound so much tighter but, it changed the ethos of the band, we weren't the same team anymore, when the original drummer announced he was missing us and wanted to come back, it was an easy decision to make and the balance of the band was restored.
3. I tend to play with three fingers now when playing finger style, it didn't take long to include the third finger into the playing but stopping three fingers giving a triplicate type rhythm took a little longer, it shouldn't be too hard for you to go from one finger to two as you are already a competent player so you shouldn't need to be concentrating on what your fretting hand is doing just focusing on what your fingers are doing should see you getting it right pretty quickly

So, it was a waste of time for the venue, the promoter, the sound man and the bands, I assume at some point these venues will close, the promoters will stop, the bands won't have anywhere to play and people will be on here bemoaning the fact that there is no new music anymore.....rant over
Sorry, I just copied and pasted what I had put on Facebook, so the bit about "people on here bemoaning the fact there is not new music anymore" was not aimed at Basschat as we are all musicians on here that want to see live music thrive, it was more a dig at "friends" that grew up knowing how important live bands were that now just sit in front of the television on a Saturday night eating pizza and bitching that the likes of X Factor has ruined music....well no, the fact you can't be bothered to get off your lazy collective asses and go and support live music is the reason that the likes of X Factor have been able to ruin music!

6. I have just put one of these into my roadworn Precision, fantastic ballsy pick up, GLWTS
7. I actually got to hear mine for the first time this weekend, I let the last act use my rig at an outdoor festival, the bass player used a Jazz bass I thought it sounded fantastic, so much better than when I am stood on top of it! I am a little more confident to gig with my Jazz from time to time as it sounds stronger than I thought it would when stood a little distance from the amp.
8. Either you are all lying b'stards or the quiz is broke, I didn't even pick throw keyboard player out of window option! I answered honestly and got Sid Vicious, surely I have more talent than that.......hang on, white / black Precision, pick player, ex punk / still punk at heart, actually used to have the nickname Sid, the good looking one in the band....it's all coming together
9. I have my beady eye on this one but really can't justify another bass, I have the fretless version which is gorgeous and they would make a perfect pair
10.
Put some flatwounds on your bass.
I found the opposite, backs of lacquered necks often feel sticky at this time of year, don't quote me on it but I think the scientific explanation is that moisture builds up between palm and neck, on a polished smooth neck there is nowhere for the moisture to go so it builds up and creates that sticky feeling, a plain wood neck negates that, I found when I played with flat wounds any rapid slides up and down the neck caused a heat build up in the tip of my fingers.....that coupled with a sticky neck didn't make for confident playing. I have a cheap practice Precision with an un-lacquered neck, in really hot weather I will take that along as an option in case my main bass is feeling a bit sticky, I tend not to gig with flatwounds at all, I think if I ever find myself gigging with a fretless on a regular basis I would be tempted to have an ebony board fitted and use round wounds on the bass.
11. This joker also wants over a £1000 for a really, honestly super rare 1974 Antoria, bolt on neck ply wood Les Paul Custom pile of poo that apparently is the closest copy of the Steve Jones Les Paul that you can get for under £3000, the only similarity being that it has two stickers applied! Nothing but a greedy chancer at work, as some one else has already suggested "take him round the back of the bike shed and give him a slapping" only I would use the Antoria!
12. I remember there was a similar add in the back of Guitar and Bass magazine, it must have been there for well over a year, it was something like "Band seeks bassist aged 18 to 20 must have long brown hair!" Ok I get the age thing, it may be slightly limiting but Ok, but I can't get my head around the long brown hair, are we talking Cousin It length or just over the shoulder, what actually constitutes brown, is mousey blonde sufficiently to qualify. I was so tempted to find a picture of some 18 year stunning blonde holding a bass and send it to them with a message saying "really wanted to apply but sadly my hair was the wrong colour...gutted" Love Michelle aged 19
13.
Only just twigged that the hideous Keef guitar's a 5-string. Strange.
Keef tended to remove the low E string and play them as a five string guitar, he did it with the famous Micawber Telelcaster if you google images of it
14. We supported Midge Ure a couple of years back, on stage he uses a stock Vox AD50, a Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal and a stock Vintage branded Les Paul.....and a lot of talent as well! GLWTS
15. Do you know anything about the bass? It looks like it could be a hand built bass to me, perhaps a local luthier who did a few in a certain area, we had a builder in the Northampton area who built similar styled basses back in the eighties under the name Adam Thompson, I had a lovely fretless which was great other than it was too big to fit in any bass case I ever came across!
16. I think at best it is a £300 ish Mexican Precision with a Seymour Duncan pickup stuck in, not quite sure how that makes a £1000 bass?
17. I was lucky enough to have acquired Stiff Little Fingers Flags and Emblems tour back drop (I worked with their tour manager on another project) at that time they were still playing some very big venues so this back drop must have been 20ft x 20ft so far too bug to display anywhere, at some point it must have got put in the old shed where it was fine until the roof finally rotted away...when I finally replaced the shed I found the rotted remains still on a shelf at the back....a piece of memorabilia sadly lost forever now
18. Mrs2611 is pretty good about it, as long as they are not sitting around in the lounge she doesn't mind, I have promised to sell them all at some point and we can live like kings on the proceeds for at least two weeks!
19.
It seems odd that people who aren't professionsal are taking backup basses and other kit, whilst no pros that I know do, other than guitarists who use different guitars on different songs.
I have to disagree with this, pretty much every professional band I have ever seen has a rack of guitars / basses at the side of the stage, just in case. I know a guy who services a certain top players amps, he has a complex looking Ashdown / Ampeg amp stack, the Ashdown because that is who he is endorsed by and the Ampeg for when the Ashdown goes wrong.....I know Ally McMordie (SLF) was using two stacked Ampeg's last time he toured, speaking to the sound guy there was there was a third behind the bass rig as it was quite likely that at least one would pack up during the night! Like an earlier post said, I carry spares for virtually everything just in case, however I have never needed them other than a lead failure at my first big gig in front of a couple of thousand people.....that experience taught me well!
20. Either Rio or White Boys and Heroes depending on whether it's fretted or fretless party time, my mate annoys me as he always plays the solo from Chic's Everybody Dance when he picks up one of my basses. I can't compete with that one!
21. I had....ok, still have a Rolf Harris album where he is holding a very worried looking young Kangaroo, it all seemed so innocent when I was eight, but the signs were clearly there!
22. Excellent, just about finished my current book (The Story of Crass) so I was looking for a new read..ordered!
23. Do you have to have the volume turned up in order to send a signal through the amp to the tuner? Have you checked the lead from the amp to the tuner is ok? Do you have another tuner you could run out to to confirm the tuner out on your amp is working ok?
24. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-squier-precision-Bass-Guitar-P-Bass-Mike-Dirnt-Edition-/282129225669?hash=item41b03657c5:g:IkEAAOSwaB5XpzO4 These are such good basses, I have stripped the finish off mine and redone it in a butterscotch colour I have done a few upgrades but the basic woodwork remains original, it is light, sounds great, plays brilliantly and out performs most of my other basses, it does more gigs than any of my other basses. If you have been thinking about one of these, go for it, you wont regret it, I think they are that good (the small print.....I am not associated with the seller in any way )
