I've got a clutch of Orange/Matamps, they are mostly over 20 odd years old (one is nearly 50) and work perfectly (they have all been checked over, recently, and caps etc replaced as necessary) - If the stuff is gigged a fair bit, I think a yearly check is a good idea, even if it's just to check the bias - it's not just the reliability here, there is also a safety factor...........

Meanwhile, closer to home : I knew this studio when it was at Maple Cross (even recorded a demo there) - Google Jackson Studios, it's an interesting read (apologies for hijack......) [b] Jackson Studios Revisited[/b] This pile of bricks is Jackson Studios, the birthplace of many iconic British sounds. We want to bring it back to life here at Chiltern Open Air Museum so that music fans, children and in fact everyone, can enjoy a trip down musical memory lane. The studio was used by Jack Jackson known as the ‘Father of DJs’ who made television and radio programmes for the BBC in the 1950s. It was then used by iconic recording artists Motorhead for the Ace of Spades, Elton John’s earliest recordings, Dr Feelgood, Eddie and the Hotrods, Ian Dury, Tom Robinson and many more. Chiltern Open Air Museum is seeking to rebuild this unique piece of history.

Worth bearing in mind - if something electrical goes phut soon after purchase, under the Sale of Goods act you are entitled to a full refund or a replacement item - which, at your option can be an 'upgrade' at no extra cost if the retailer is unable to get you the same model in a reasonable timespan - happened to me with a washing machine once - bought a 'second' which went wrong - got a brand new one (£200 dearer) for no more money - result...........if you accept an offer of a repair you have little in the way of rights left........

Back in the day (don't snore), I went through a number of gigs where some idiot thought it fun to pull the loudspeaker jacks out of my valve amp - I removed the casings on said plugs and watched as someone copped the full output voltage of my 240watt Orange up their right arm - seemed to do the trick.......

Having looked at 'the' website, I am somewhat underwhelmed by the lack of recent 'tests'. A cynic (moi ?) might conclude that they are only featuring their own stock (surely not....) I've used valve amps (some quite loud) on and off since the late sixties - I've never felt the need to hack about (polite, that) with my valves...but, what do I know ??

...bought a 100watt Marshall plexi for 100 quid at a second-hand shop in Fulham (!) - used it for a couple of years and went over to Orange Matamps......chipboard cabs screwed & glued (Resin W) - speakers from Celestion at Thames Ditton, 3 cell horns (with socks stuffed in two of the cells) from Vitavox (Queensbury).....and a glorious noise it all made .............

Back in the stone age, I had a portable dimmer pack hanging on the wall of a venue.....I found out very quickly that if I touched it whilst holding my microphone I got quite a kick - so I didn't, for the next five years......sorted.

I owned a couple of Celestion SR bass bins in the eighties - I think these were supposed to be a type of isobaric? - I know they were this side of useless.

Both of the above posts look right - it needs a direct connection (at low level) to the tweeter [b]unit[/b] - this will only tell you if the beast is in general working order aside from the crossover - after that, you really do need a tech, imo.

IF it were mine, I'd connect the 8ohm brass unit (which is your tweeter, btw) to known working amp at almost nil volume....you need to get to where the problem lies (I'm not convinced it's with the 'new' amp, btw, but you might need a co-operative amp tech any second now).

You need to connect one side of the battery and then put the other side in contact by 'tapping' it - the cone should move. Just connecting both sides of the battery static will not prove a lot, imo.
