1.
Was Phil Spector not brought in at the last minute to "Save" the recordings from those sessions? I believe he put all the strings and suchlike on after the band sessions were over. Lennon, for one, was less than happy with the finished album because of all the add ons. They had, to all intents, split by then anyway so I doubt they were particularly bothered.
That would explain what I'm hearing.
2.
If you want a bass line where the player is unsure of the chords and hits repeatedly bum notes, have a listen to The Beatles' 'Long & Winding Road.'
Just listened to that, not a fun listen from a bass perspective. I'm not entirely sure why it has a bassline at all, it sounds superfluous to me - a string arrangement to carry the "bass" part would work much better IMO
3. Rubbish, just wanted it to end whilst playing - a sound limiter and an indifferent audience made for a crap night. Plus, the one monitor we had was over by me so I could hear the DI'd bass, but it meant the guitarist couldn't hear his backing vocals well, so was out of tune sometimes (including unfortunatley, the first song). Had a punter come up to me afterwards and ask, in a friendly way, why I played a five string. I was amazed he'd noticed He did compliment us and we got a wedding booking out of it, so it can't have been all bad, but it didn't feel good when we were up there.
4.
I've always enjoyed Chrismas Wrapping by The Waitresses I think? It may be called Christmas Rapping.
The bassist on that was one of Marcus Miller's students, forget (her?) name now, but it's a great bassline.
5. The Digitech is a good shout, I remember trying one years ago in Denmark Street and liking it.
6. I could do with an envelope filter for a song we're adding to our set - Hey Ya by Outkast. I'll probably use it in a couple of other places too, but the prompt to get one is this song. Ideally I'd like to get an MXR, but as the next three months see all three of my children's birthdays and then Christmas, I can't spend that kind of money right now. So, what's the cheapest, least bad option out there?
7. Anyone else going? For me Dragged Into Sunlight and Weigedood are the two I'm most looking forward to, but also PG, Lost, Bloodbath, Myrkur, Warning, Nails and Wren. From a bassits point of view, I'm also looking forward to catching Dying Fetus and Beyond Creation.
8.
ooh, they're playing Bristol. The bits off the new album with Anna Von Hausswolff are fantastic.
Brighton for me; I'm loving the new record, best thing they've done since Black Cascade I reckon.
9. 2x fretted 5 1x fretted 4 If the 4 string were stolen/damaged I doubt I'd replace it with another 4.
10. Damnation Festival in November, Wolves In The Throne Room in December
11. I vaguely remember reading that Jon Shuker had built a couple of 5 string Ric copies, don't know if anyone knows about that? Or if I made it up in my head.
12.
Only followed them up to Midian, heard the Yob follow on and was not impressed. Overlong songs that didn't go anywhere. I only go on Talkbass because I can't get on here at work.
Clearing The Path.... is well worth checking out, it's a superb record. When I saw them they played it in full, for good reason :-)
13. I don't know his name (which in fairness, speaks volumes in itself) but the bloke who played live second guitar and sang backing vocals for Porcupine Tree - he did it perfectly for years, but was never in the band.
14.
The original bassist in Yob used a Ric (Isamu? From Elaborations to Quantum Mystic), not sure what the latest bassist uses.
I saw Yob on the Clearing The Path To Ascend tour and the bassist was playing a Ric - it was probably the best bass tone I've heard live. Though I think he may have switched to EGC now.
15. Jazz 5 string with rounds, both pickups and tone on full into an EBS DI or amp.
16. I suspect the DI is independent of the volume control, that was certainly the case on the MB500 I had.
17.
https://www.youtube....h?v=fonDsCqxxT0 Ryan Martinie´s instrumental trio, Soften the Glare.
Thanks for posting that, really enjoying it.
18.
Also, Panopticon by Isis is a total monster of a record. You already knew that though. Different topic.
It's a belter, though Oceanic is my favourite. For me it's Cave In, I didn't really rate them back in the early 2000s, saw them supporting the Foos and thought they were okay but nothing special. These days, they're one of my favourite bands and I'd love to see them again. They're not technically split, but rarely do any live performances or recordings - being all quite busy with other projects.
19. I had a fun jam with Paul the drummer, in an ideal world a tame guitarist and/or keys as well would be good for the jam room.
20. Many thanks to the organisers another cracking day, motorway issues aside. Steve Lawson was the highlight of the day for me, I'd have sat and listened to him talk all day. Will have to check out some of his records, some Uriah Heep too - though as an Opeth fan I should have done that ages ago.
21. I'll be arriving around midday as I need to ferry family around in the morning. Looking forward to it:)
22. Try transposing some songs to make use of the low B, should help to get to grips with the string and the notes on it.
23. A friend of mine who had a history of drug problems picked Perfect Day for her first dance....

25. The new Foo Fighters, quite underwhelmed so far. Edit: listened to the whole thing and it is sadly the dullest and least memorable album I've heard this year; whoever is saying yes to Dave Grohl needs to stop.
