Hadn't see Curtis Harding before, thought that was quite good. The only thing I thought was a bit strange was having CH and Weller on the same show, their music seemed quite similar which detracted from the eclectic nature of the show, in fact it made me think that Harding would make a very good support act for Weller on a tour.

That's a real shame, fingers crossed it's diagnosed early enough so they can do something about it.

It may not work for everyone and it won't necessarily work for all types of songs but I often look at the song structure first - if the bass player is playing much the same thing over each verse then I'll work on that as a 'unit' then I'll look at the choruses, probably playing something different to the verses but each chorus much the same with maybe occasional variations. Then I'll look at what the line is under any solos plus intro/outros. I'll get to a point where I'm fairly happy with each 'unit' then put it together as a whole. Playing to the point where you can't physically do what you need to becomes counter productive, take a break and come back to it later. It's not a race.

Next week it's Jon Wetton so we may hear some bass action

At one time I had this strange idea that I'd like to have one each of the common iconic basses but I got as far as having a pre EB MM (I already had a P, Jazz and a Ric), decided that it really wasn't my sort of instrument and would therefore just end up on a hanger so I ditched the plan and have been very low key in terms of gear changes ever since. I think my total bass dealings on this forum (including the bassworld years) is sold 2, bought 1. I use the same combo I bought second hand in about 2006 and it just replaced a near identical combo I'd used before that (both TE, just went from one that couldn't run an extension cab to one that could) and I've swapped from using a 4x10 to a 2x10 ext cab to save my back. My gear purchases are invariably driven by new project requirements. If what I have pre existing is fine for the next project then nothing new gets bought. The only thing I've picked up for my new band is a PA power amp as that was the main thing they hadn't kept between them from when they last played together.

The last band I was in knew that the guitarist was going to be having leave off gigging for a while so we auditioned a guy initially as depping cover as the guitarist was definitely not going to make the next gig. The singer found him through whatever means and gave him a month to learn the basics of the set. He turned up and obviously hadn't put anything like the necessary work in (and it wasn't hard stuff). Eventually after hamfistedly busking through yet another one me and the drummer decided to have a fag break even though neither of us smoke so the singer could have a discussion with his discovery. He must have really torn into him as there was a distinct atmosphere when we came back in. Another song and a half in and the new guy says his hand has now cramped up and he can't make the chord shapes at all and doesn't think he'll be able to do the next gig! we never heard from him again. Had to desperately get the regular guitarist back in which meant he didn't take his girlfriend out for her birthday meal that weekend and gigged with us instead!

Yeah when they start breaking into double figures I get a bit twitchy but I somehow seem to hold up. I actually like a reasonable demarcation were the band clearly stops and the audience starts. Some of the pub gigs I did with the last band when the pub was particularly busy (and we never had a stage to work on) I seemed to spend as much time watching out for drunks dancing into my mic stand as concentrating on the music.

Why are singers (generally) averse to lessons/instruction ?
KevB replied to Coilte's topic in General Discussion
I must admit the singer was the main reason I quit my last band. -
New strings have made my bass sound awful! Any one else had this?
KevB replied to spacecowboy's topic in General Discussion
Easier to swap the battery over for an initial test than taking the strings off. OP mentions overrall low output rather than the finer tone characteristics which would point to the battery. Other alternative is that maybe they are a lighter guage than what was on before and the strings are sitting that bit further from the PU's so give lower apparent output? Would be surprised if it made that much difference though. -
Quite possibly the most expensive 12" driver I've seen!
KevB replied to xgsjx's topic in General Discussion
Even if it was £104.35 it's a funny number to come up with. -

As some singers get older they often have to change the way in which they operate just to get through tours at all. Rush have been playing some of the older songs in dropped keys for quite a while (that detuned red bass used to be a dead giveaway that an 'oldie' was coming up) so he's probably struggling on the top notes too.

I was driving back from somewhere during the week and whispering Bob mentioned something about it on the radio so I looked it up on BBC site.
-
Yep I might be tempted by that set list, even if Ged can't sing half of it any more, as a 'last hurrah' gig.
Yeah, loads of pictures and live clips of Glover using the bass with DP. Odd though, Glover's modified Rick was Jetglo, whereas the one in the link looks more like a burst of some description. Here's a more in-depth piece about the restoration! http://www.rauenguit...ger_glover.html
The restoration in that link is much later of course, probably work done for when RG used the Ric again briefly around the mid-90's and didn't even use it for whole gigs then (recall it coming out for the odd song or two on the Pupendicular tour around 1996). The original mods must have been done pre 1974 because, as mentioned before, he wasn't in the band by then, so the date mentioned on the Dawksound page is wrong or there was yet more work done after he'd quit Purple.
It Bites did some good b-sides. I'll Meet You In The Spring is prob my favourite. It's good to remember a time when you didn't just get four mixes of the single.
VAMPIRES!
Glover's modified Rick is on "Who Do We Think We Are?". Compare the tone to that on "Machine Head" - it's much fatter, but woollier and with less definition. Still has a noticeable Rick flavour, though.
In that case he's got his dates wrong, he says he worked on RG's bass in 1974 by which time Glover had left Deep Purple entirely. WDWTWA was recorded July-October 1972 and released in 73. Or it had already been modified previously by someone else.

I'm hoping to nip over to Derby to catch them tonight, last saw them at High Voltage in 2011.

How about 'Scraping foetus off the wheel'? yes, they existed (band name changed I think but all had 'foetus' in them somewhere).

There are some delightfully mental B-sides in the Gillan back catalog which have subsequently ended up on the extended CD versions of their album releases. My particular favourite is Your Sister's On My List.
