Midlands Bass Bash 2

I can now confirm that I definitely can't make it as I have family commitments that day. Looks like you will not be short of attendees anyway so have a great day guys.
2. Personally I think whoever in the band that keeps turning up hopelessly unprepared and uses the time to learn a song from scratch rather than do that in their own time should pay an extra levvy but I doubt it would catch on...
3.
What if you recommended the person who the article is about?
If the OP got recommendations from others for the same guy then he would at least know that some people were finding him useful so it would be more data for him to make a valued judgement on.
4.
I can claim to have been "professional " for a short period when I lived abroad and only gigged for a living
I bet you had a music stand and everything. Showoff.
5. Agree with most of what's already been said. You shouldn't be paying £30 of your hard earned to suck up to someone and stroke their ego while they show off their chops, you are there for a lesson not an audience. In many walks of life people who are good at stuff don't necessarily make good teachers. You only have to watch a few youtube interviews where some clearly gifted players sometimes seem to have a job articulating what they are doing themselves never mind teaching someone else. You might give the guy a second go if you think you could afford another potential £30 loss just in case you got him on an off day but if you were prepared to give a rough region where you are without someone trying to 'out' you I imagine there are folks on here who could give you names of teachers in your area that they are having worthwhile lessons with.
6. Just as a price check which Sennheiser model is now the vocal 'industry standard' mic?
7. Geordie mafia innit, it's not what you know it's who you know.... yes, I'm joking.
8. A guy I used to play with in a band about 7 yrs ago has been in touch with me but as I've recently taken on a new project i don't think I can accommodate his band too. I expect he is really looking for a committed 'one band' player anyway. He's a decent guy to work with, very professional attitude and the band will be fronted by his partner who also fronted the band we were in together. Currently rehearsing in Stapleford, Nottingham. Anyone interested PM me and I'll pass on his email address to you.
9.
My biggest gripe is PAs are usually nowhere near powerful enough. We dont rehearse particularly loud but in some places we've been to, we have had to turn right down on amps just to hear vox.
In those that have a few adjoining rooms I can see why they would do it as the soundproofing is often inadequate. If you are not careful you can get into escalating 'loudness wars' in adjoining rooms. There is some noticeable bleed through from the adjoining rooms in the ones I'm using with the new project.
10. Yes it's a 2 way street. Bands need to put in the effort but the venues need to back up their end too. If I was to offer any defence to pubs it's probably that they are working with tiny margins in terms of staffing and getting posters up for bands can easily fall to the bottom of priorities, especially if they aren't offering much money to the bands and as a result don't get a big increase in punters compared to same night if there wasn't a band on.
11. Just been informed that our next rehearsal booked for 9am this Sunday morning. Who in god's name wants to play pub rock at that time on a Sunday
12. Hardly done any rehearsals with the band I've been in for last 2 years but before that used to rehearse fairly regularly with previous projects. There's a big range in standard and usually you get what you pay for though having said that the new guys I'm rehearsing with use a place which isn't bad and it's probably as cheap as anywhere. The big drawback is it is up an iron fire escape type set of stairs as it is on a first floor. I only take minimal gear with me but it's still a pain. On the other hand a band I was in years ago used to rehearse in a textile factory basement and it was awful. We'd have to go round other unused rooms 'borrowing' bits just to get a half decent drum kit together. I recall kneeling down to try to coax a usable EQ from the bass combo that was provided and when i stood up there was a dark patch soaked through on my knee due to the carpet being so damp. As Chris says, often the PA isn't up to much and you have to fill in your imagination how the performance will actually sound through your own PA. As a final check its worth having the occasional full band set up its own gear in an empty room to fine tune the sound.
13. I never got round to measuring it but the neck width on my (4 string) precision deluxe (USA 2003 model) was narrower than a standard p but wider than a jazz (I have 1 each of these also for comparison) and I thought it was an excellent compromise.
14. I'm going to have to go through some of these old band names threads as my new project is as yet nameless and there is a push to start looking at venues so prospective LL's will need a name and we've not hit on anything really catchy ourselves yet.
15.
For me the final product be it a recording or live performance is more interesting than the technical ability of the people performing it.
That's always how I've approached it for sure.
16. Here's one of Andy's tunes as done by Robert Palmer; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WTH8yNWzMk
17. As with all the greats we have at least a body of work to enjoy over and over but he's another who's gone too soon. RIP.
18. I got the original versions of these (light units are round rather than square ok mk.II but otherwise the same); http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/kam-partybar-mk-ii-portable-led-stage-lighting-n40ht And also one of these; http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/green-and-red-laser-star-projector-n96hg And for the money I can't knock either of them really. Could probably do with a second set of both at some point but they are easy to set up and don't take up much room in smaller venues.
19. I recall several years ago JG sold off a fair bit of his stuff on eBay but there was no hint of 'Do you know who I am' in the listings and iirc the gear was all listed at sensible prices for what it was for year/condition etc just like any member of the public. Had even more respect for the guy after that.
20. Just put extra drugs and hookers on the band rider. It all evens itself out.
21. With the band that I've just served notice on, I was in a pub having last orders with a mate a few months back and there was a band on. I only saw the last 7 songs of their 2nd set but every single one of them was in the sets i was regularly doing with my band. Interestingly one of the members had previously depped with 'my' band before I joined
22. I'm sure I have the odd album by them in my iTunes collection but not played it for a while. Bassist using a pick too, that's pretty nifty playing. I have all sorts of obscure prog/krautrock/psych stuff from late 60's to late 70's and it's surprising just how good some of the musicians were (to my ears) but remain relatively unknown. Some of them came from jazz backgrounds so really knew their stuff before embarking on more proggy territory.
23. Saw them last night (supporting Europe) and also when they first toured as BSR a couple of years ago. I think Scott Gorham was uneasy about the band going out as Thin Lizzy as the connection was growing thinner with each memebr change so it was probably right they changed the name even though they actually sound more like TL on the new album than the first one. Maybe I'm getting a bit past it but what spoiled it a bit last night for me was they had an 'in your face' all out rock sound for every song and it just lacked the subtelty that you get on the recorded versions of the songs. I think it all stemmed from the drummer, who's a powerful rock drummer but lacked light and shade. The version of Whisky in the Jar was closer to the Metallica version than any genuine TL version I've heard.
24. Clicked on the link you provided in the original post back in Feb it looks like whatever site they were using to host the shop is now displaying 'shop closed' so they may well have gone tits up. Or it was all a bit of a con from the outset.
25. I thought I read somewhere that the Ric copies made under the 'Greco' label were half decent efforts but I'm no expert.
