Launch of a new side project, at a local open mic night, containing the drummer and guitarist from my main band. We are Me Next and the Gimme Gimmes, a tribute to "the greatest cover band in the world" Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Played two high energy sets of three songs, (the first being only six minutes long!), in full Hawaiian shirt attire and went down really well. Overall a really encouraging start to a new project and the most fun I've had on stage for ages! Only a couple of pictures have surfaced so far but there are more to follow!
You appear to have turned back time and got an 80's era Graham Bonnet in on vocals. Well done sir!

Beach Boys (well Brian at least) inspired by Rubber Soul to go on and make Pet Sounds which then inspires The Beatles to go and do Sgt Pepper. It's all good.
I could be in with a chance if they were more specific about where the hair has to be
I just naturally assumed 'nostrils' but now you mention it...

Decent session with prospective new band, decided to dust off the PK5 pedals and give the lads a demo to see if I could add a little extra background washes for a few of the songs. They could see the potential immediately which was encouraging so I can see about 5 or 6 in the current set which I can use them on, just worthwhile enough to merit hauling the extra gear. This was only the third proper session I've had with them and one of the guys is already looking at potential venues to tap up for gigs which is encouraging. There are so many songs on the set list that would meet with howls of derision on here so I won't bother listing them. The main thing is it is a workable set that should get us gigs and then we can work up new stuff from there.

With the cheap strings I've been using recently I just trim about 2" off the E string (on to Fender P and J) and use the whole string to wind on for the other three. Never bothered counting how many turns it actually is, guessing around 3? Not had any issues with them anyway, stay in tune fine, give even response and not broken one. That's about as much as I want from a string.

Eurovision entry - under achieving as an art form

Not 'everyone' but certainly exactly those countries which had become the 'power base' and which had sympathies with middle east countries such as Iraq which we invaded in 2003. -
This is a myth that gets trotted out every year and its just not true. The UK has won the bloomin' thing 5 times and came second fifteen times. On the "all-time" rankings we're near the top (if not actually at the top) depending on how you measure it.
How have we done since 2000? Here's a direct quote from one of the sites you linked to: 'The new millennium saw a sea change in many countries fortunes with more and more entrants from the former Soviet Union leading to a massive issue with neighbour and diaspora voting, most shamelessly in those countries and those of the former Yugoslavia, that threatened the very future of the event. The power base in Eurovision most definitely moved to the East and South of the continent and to a select bunch of countries within that region.' -
If that ad had been in my area recently I'd certainly have followed it up for more info.
We don't. I thought it was accepted as a big joke that we can't win, therefore not worth taking seriously.
Correct. The main things you have to keep in mind with the Eurovision song contest these days is a)It's not really about music and b)it's not really much of a contest. Accept it for the irrelevant nonsensical camp TV event it is and ignore the 'result' and all's fine. -

We've entered far worse in the last 10 years or so. -

New legislation coming in, it doesn't fully address the issues but it's a start; http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/feb/25/touts-suffer-blow-government-backs-regulation-secondary-ticketing -
Just came across it and thought it interesting.
I had to learn a set of songs once, included was a Rolling Stones number, though I've no idea which one.
Most likely culprit would be Jumpin Jack Flash. It's written in B but due to pitching issues sounds somewhere between Bb and B but not quite either. Some bands go the whole hog and just play it in A which always sounds too low to suit the song to me. -
Basically if the band are enjoying it, the audience are enjoying it at least as much as the band are and there's a third party prepared to part with money to enable this joyous union to take place you shouldn't give a flying f*ck what anyone else thinks.

Been gigging the same Trace Combo with SWR ext cab for the thick end of 10 years now, both 'carpeted', never had a cover for either. Still in reasonable nick for the use I've had. I don't treat them like they were made of china nor do I chuck them down flights of stairs. I expect me always taking them to gigs personally rather than them being in a communal van is probably half the reason they are as they are. My PK5 pedals and sound module are flight cased though.
We're playing the Stevie Version but acting out the Gillan version!
Reasonable compromise. Don't forget your broom and overalls and be a bit menacing if you're on bass duties.

Yes welcome you little doppelganger you. I hope this doesn't get too confusing for folks...
Yeah I completely see your point here but its been me thats done absolutely everything already so far: Out of my own pocket I have bought/ had made or sorted out: Our website, business cards, flyers, posters, band banner, stage lights and PA system. We had it agreed I 'd sort out all that and the others would find the gigs, so I sort of feel mugged off for all the effort and money I put in. Especially the website because I spent loads of hours on that!
Should have mentioned this earlier. Your path is clear - you sack the lot of them, keep the name/web site/lights/PA that you have paid for anyway and you then get in replacements that are seasoned gigging musos that are wanting first and foremost to gig and have decent contacts to make that happen. Job done.
-
Best of luck mate, if they've got anything about them they will be able to spot the difference between someone who is slightly rusty and someone who won't cut it at all. Nine songs sorted should be more than enough for an audition.

The important point is that all the band members are clear about what the band is for and all agree with it's aims and pathway. I have no issue with hobby bands if it is clear from the outset what the set up is. It could be an outfit purely set up to write and record novel music with little intention of gigging. Fine as long as everyone is on the same page. The problems start when the band is sold to an incoming member as one thing and then it subsequently transpires it will not live up to that vision. Westarx, you are paying out more in petrol/rehearsal room hire than you've got any chance of recouping in gigging fees (unless you are on major money for your 5 gigs per year). Is it a hobby that you can afford? If not then something must change.

Bigger photos in the link Skank posted. Not really much of a Who officianado but that Gibson twin neck does look like it's been repaired and the necks aren't parallel anymore in later photos, unless it's a trick of the camera angle.
