There must be a market for a decal that reads 'Fender Imprecision' in the correct logo/font for cack handed blokes like me when faced with a fretless P.

I didn't say they weren't techincally accomplished, just don't think the material is all that great as a band. Same for Dream Theater.

Fond memories of Eddy Grant's 'Can't Get Enough' album on tape. Actually it was 2 albums on an extended play tape, they bundled an earlier album 'Message Man' on with it. It was the early 80's and I'm not going into detail, the girl in question has grown up kids of her own now. Still get a xmas card every year though...

Just picked this up today, £12 for the 2 disk version with the live gig included which seemed reasonable. Something else to amuse me over the weekend as I have no gigs.

Muse. I don't particularly dislike them but I think they are a bit overrated as a band.

How far would you go for your favourite band?

In the mid 90's I flew to New Orleans for a week mainly to see Deep Purple play 2 shows back to back at the weekend in the House Of Blues venue there. It had been organised via one of the old pre-internet 'alt.music' newsgroups and one of the main people involved got us all backstage passes to hang out with the band after one of the gigs. Spent some time having a nice chat with Ian Paice. -
+1 for The Smiths though really I don't tend to single out individuals much as a punter, its the whole package for me as a unit that has to 'do it' for me to keep interested.

I recall ending up being responsible for the onstage mix in the latter months of one band I was in and the guitarist's wife (who had no relevant techincal knowledge at all) coming up to the front of the stage and berating me about what it should sound like. This was while we were playing and I was doing bass, midi pedals and providing backing vocals at the time. I told her at the between sets break in no uncertain terms that it was down to us to sort it out and basically go forth and multiply (the mix was actually OK but maybe her hubby wasn't quite as up front as she obviously wanted). She never spoke to me again and the band broke up not too long after.

Steve Wishnevsky of Wishbass fame's workshop just burned down.

What's the deal with wish basses - are they made to order? If so I guess there will be folks with part completed instruments that will never arrive and may have laid down deposits that they won't get back? It's a sickener all round for retailer and customer alike. -
So after 2 pages we've all learned that some people, to varying degrees, like the Kaiser Chiefs and some don't. And the same for Oasis. I can sleep soundly tonight in that knowledge.

I still have the 2003 American S1 jazz I picked up on EBay about 8 yrs ago (for under £400 with SKB hard case!) and also think the build quality is first rate. I've also picked up a 50th anniversary precision (2001) in the last couple of years (from a fellow BC'er) and I can't fault the build on that either. Also had a US P deluxe from 2003 and that was excellent too, possibly the best neck out of the three. It's obviously a ridiculously small sample but from what others have said on here in various other threads I get the impression that by the early 2000's Fender USA were perhaps going through one of their better, more consistent manufacturing periods?
Having given this one quite a bit of thought over the years - and discussed it with BlueJay, who of course does left-handedness 'properly' - I almost wonder whether it makes more sense: by playing a right-handed bass, my (dominant) left hand is in charge of the fingerboard, where I'd argue most of the complicated stuff takes place! The catch - and there's always one, isn't there? - is that you might well want your dominant hand fingering/picking the strings, for its greater sensitivity. I suspect learning keys for a couple of years before I started the bass was probably crucial in building up the dexterity in my right hand.
I've said pretty much the same thing in a number of other threads over the years about this subject. I may be not so left handed as a number of others though so maybe it was easier for me. I still do many two-handed things right handed but the single handed 'dexterity jobs' are always using my left. To the extent where I use a knife and fork right handed but a spoon left handed. At cricket I bowled lefty but batted righty. I'm right footed as well.
Far canal, Ralph, you play like that and you're doing it the wrong way round too? Respect!
There was a poll a year or two back, there's actually a decent number of us on the forum that are naturally left handed but play right handed (including me).

As I mentioned in an older thread along similar lines a while back I saw Peter Gabriel on his last tour in an arena and barely heard a note Tony Levin played all night. I think these big spaces with high roofing and very non-absorbing surfaces are a real challenge for even decent sound engineers.

Was a 'singer' ( I use the term lightly) in a school rock band but didn't gig with them. All went our separate ways to various colleges etc then in first summer back in between 1st & 2nd years we had one final 'goodbye jam' as we knew after this we would all get too involved with lives away from where we grew up. Ended up buying the bass player's cheapo jazz copy and then it sat in a corner for a couple of years until I had an unexpected 6 months off before a new course started and I taught myself some rudimentary bass skills. Still didn't gig for many years after that, just bedroom jams with mates, never thought I was good enough. In real playing terms I'm still actually a late starter even though it's about 30 years since I first picked up a bass. And it shows Then: More recently:
So then I had to as well... God it's a bland song, is it not??
Can't believe you hadn't heard it. Well, more to the point I can't believe you had passed up on a film that has 'pussy' in the title and this was the theme for 'Octopussy'.

There are a few new releases from classic rock acts this and next month - Thunder, The Answer, UFO, Black Star Riders and Europe. I'm going to see the last three play live and will probably pick up the albums in due course.

I think this would be close enough for most cover bands; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHKXs1_PRkI

Opening riff of Weller's 'Changing man' sounds uncannily like ELO's '10538 overture' from many years previous.

Regular in our set, i play it much like the youtube clip in post #3 with a few improv fills at the end (I'm no J Scheff ), works fine. Keep it 'bouncy' and it'll be OK.

Saw them a year or two back in a relatively small venue, excellent live show and a thoroughly entertaining night out. Suffered from 'cracking first album syndrome' along with likes of Killers and Franz Ferdinand who were popular around same time and who also struggled to keep up the level on subsequent releases.

Strings... nickel/steel. I never realised I was a "steel guy"!
KevB replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
I've mentiond them on other string related threads before and didn't want to be seen to be on a hobby horse. If you are interested they are these; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Coban-Bass-Guitars-DCG3-Bass-Guitar-Full-Set-4-Strings-45-105-Deluxe-Range-j78-/151583961517?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item234b1bb1ad#ht_3977wt_1144 At one time you could get them even cheaper if you bought multiple packs but that feature seems to have been dropped. I'm guessing they are just some far east bulk manufacturer that this shop then puts their own label on. -
Never had a formal set list in 2 yrs of gigging with current band. Singer has scrappy bit of dog eared A4 on top of his amp which he occasionally refers to and calls the numbers from it in any order he sees fit as we go along. I can see the advantage of flexibility and 'reading the crowd' but it also leads to unnecessary delays as well. I have tried to get them a bit sharper since I joined and I think I've been partly successful but one of these days when I've been through the intro to 'Stand By Me' for 16 bars more than necessary while he gets his act together I'll just signal to the drummer to wind it up and tell him 'Sorry, you've missed it - next!'

Been using some steel roundwounds for the last year or two that are £6 delivered, sound fine to me. Had some comments about how good my bass sounds at gigs from ex bassists from the same band. Just ordered another couple of packs to have in stock for when current ones get tired just in case they put the price up!
