1.
+1. If only we had a sax player. If only we had a sax player who looked like Abi.
I'm the polar opposite of Abi aesthetically but I'm going to have a dabble at this with my PK5 pedals doing some rudimentary sax honks whilst playing bass
2.
First thing I thought of! Sounds dead easy but is actually fiendishly tricky to get right. And if it's not bang on, you won't get away with it.
Just another reason to stick to the superior (to me) original version
3.
+1 to both of these. Where's Jon Lord's?
Number 120 Averil Road, Leicester, LE5 2DB
4. I would offer my US jazz (S1 model, rosewood fretboard) but someone I trust would have to take it to the bash as I'm not going. Also I've just restrung it in the last 3 days! might be tough to find a maple board S1 to match it with anyway? the bridge isn't original either.
5. I prefer Wichita Lineman to more than half the rest of her list. Each to his own I say...
6. Depends if you like the venues or not really. My last band played the same 2 venues EVERY MONTH. One of them was a decent enough place but I never warmed to the other so after 2 years of playing it every month I'd had enough.
7. I must have taken this when I first got my jazz around 2006 as it has the original bridge on it. I quickly fitted a badass III and that's how it's stayed up to the present day, except it has a few marks picked up from gigging. Only retired it from first choice gig bass a couple of years ago but still comes out regularly for jam sessions or dep jobs. It now lives with another butterscotch US Fender P that has taken over as main gigging bass for now, they seem to get on fine... 8.
Well IF it's genuine he hasn't looked into the visa requirements has he? You cannot just go over to America and start playing in a band
Or do any other job really. One of our PhD graduates has recently secured a post doc research position in Texas, it's taken ages for the visa documentation to get sorted at their end, and this is for a position that he's successfully interviewed for and been offered, all above board. Once all that's done you still then have to go for an interview at US Immigration here to weed out the people they don't really want over there. It's not trivial.
9. I didn't really look at the questions and got 8 by picking randomely. Which is what I'd expect if there were only 2 options for each question but I think there were more. Very odd.
10. If he massively overprices it then no one will buy it unless they have more money than sense, simple as that. Try advertising your Chinese DB for £850 and see how many takers you get.
11. He started off on cello and then DB so that probably helped enormously with intonation.
12. The area where I've always thought they would struggle with (bass wise) is the mid to upper range prices. If they are still trying to shake off the 'Skoda' mentality of potential buyers then the BB1024X is over £600 and the BBNE's are over £2500 and in those respected price brackets they are up against some stiff competition to win over dyed in the wool Fender, Music Man, Warwick etc regular buyers. I doubt they would be an immediate thought to someone willing to spend over two grand on a bass even if the reviews are good.
13. As Les pointed out earlier though if it's in a field and the crowd are a distance away from the stage a small/medium 'pub' PA will easily get lost. If it's outdoors and say in a marquee or small space that can keep the sound in you might stand a better chance.
14. Doesn't everyone just use rechargeables these days anyway?
15.
To be honest, had we launched sooner, by a few months, then there might have still been a band despite the tensions. So the lesson is: don't wait too long before going for gigs.
I'd go along with this. One of my early bands (when I was still a novice to gigging) spent nearly a year rehearsing regularly only for the main guy to declare he'd gone off playing live (they were all older and been on the circuit for years on and off). We did 1 gig and went our separate ways. My latest project has taken longer to get a giggable set together than I'd like but that's only because 2 of the band are self employed and have been away working for some weekends and unable to rehearse. We've still only done about 5 proper rehearsals but are still looking to get bookings very soon.
16.
If (and I mean if) I could get the cooperation of the other bands I would hire in a PA and engineer and spread the cost. I wouldn't entertain it under any other circumstance. I would be asking the festival organiser to stump up in any case.
This
17.
That's cool, over here there are plenty of places that look for bands that perform for free. I am not sure what that's like in the UK. Blue
We won't be performing for free, we just won't make enough for it to be our sole income, like >90% of other pub covers bands here. The prime motivation will be entertaining folks and, in doing so, entertaining ourselves.

20. Sounds like a decent project to pursue Marv, hope it works out for you. What sort of music will it be?
21. Part 4 now available on iplayer,Ian Anderson talking about flute, Tull and orchestras working with bands; http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05wy67y
22.
With respect, it sounds like what you say, middle age guys that really have no strong drive to gig. It's sounds what I would call a "for fun only" band. Blue
We do want to gig, and will. It's just that money isn't the main driving force.
23. We're all middle aged with day jobs, probably the demographic of more than half the people on here, so a couple of gigs per month would suit everyone just fine. If it had been every weekend I wouldn't have done it, I have other interests,
24. I don't know if my latest project would be classed as a 'start-up' band or not. The 3 guys I've hooked up with have all played in a band together before, one of them also occasionally does acoustic solo gigs. We've so far done 4 rehearsals in a room with gear provided, we've just done one set up in an empty room with our own gear to make sure we can get a decent sound with our collective own equipment and we are allowing ourselves another rehearsal of the full set, we will then start actively chasing up gigs (I think there has already been some interest from some of the other guy's contacts). Isn't this the usual thing then?
25. For the stuff I've been playing over the last few years it's rounds all the way for me. I borrowed a P with flats at a jam session recently and really struggled with it. Nothing wrong with the bass and the owner (fellow bc'er) loves having the flats on but they're not for me. One thing I'd not realised was how much contact I make with the strings without actually sounding a note (bad technique I guess), I was getting friction burns off the flats which I don't from rounds.
