1. Out of curiosity I've just compared 3 live performances of 'Ship To Wreck' (Glasto, Later with Jools, GMA) with the original studio version on youtube and she sounds like she's singing them all the same to me, ie what was recorded is pretty much what you get live (though the mixes naturally differ a bit). Obviously just me then...as I wrote earlier I'm not that fussed about her one way or the other, strong voice though as Bassassin pointed out.
2. That's sad to hear. Yes he's on one or two in my collection, including (I think) Jesus Christ Superstar.
3. Depends how old you are but I always nip for a pee before going onstage. Nothing worse than getting halfway through a set and getting *that* feeling.
4. I still use my Bassattack pedal all the time even though I'm not using it as a DI. I don't take a spare amp but haven't tried to put the bass direct through our PA yet to simulate an amp breakdown. We may have a gig coming up that is in such a small place that I may have to do just that to free up backline space, though in that circumstance we'll probably use a sub as well as the tops on the PA and sort out a crossover.
5. I bought one of my current basses from a bc'er and then another 18 months down the line decided that another bass I had was now surplus to requirements because of this purchase and ended up putting it up for sale here. The bc'er I'd previously bought from ended up buying the 'surplus' bass from me! Considering how many members we have and in all the years I've been here I've only bought one bass and sold 2 through bc I thought it was a bit of a coincidence. I have no idea who the other 2 basses I have belonged to before me, both through eBay. I know the US jazz I bought represented a big financial loss to the previous owner because he'd left the shop receipt (Denmark Street)in the hard case when I picked it up.
6. I only got to see the end of the set last night. On the one hand I find it hard to believe he'd start deliberately singing Ace Of Spades over the Overkill backing (it doesn't seem to work as a joke in any context to me) on the other is he really that far gone that not only did he forget they'd already played AOS but didn't recognise the actual song the band started even though he's been playing it for decades? It was all very surreal and sounded utter sh*te.
7. Here's something from Jon Anderson's official site: ''Chris was a very special part of my life; we were musical brothers. He was an amazingly unique bass player - very poetic - and had a wonderful knowledge of harmony. We met at a certain time when music was very open, and I feel blessed to have created some wonderful, adventurous, music with him. Chris had such a great sense of humor... he always said he was Darth Vader to my Obiwan. I always thought of him as Christopher Robin to my Winnie the Pooh. We travelled a road less travelled and I'm so thankful that he climbed the musical mountains with me. Throughout everything, he was still my brother, and I'm so glad we were able to reconnect recently. I saw him in my meditation last night, and he was radiant. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones''.
8. Yep, paid rehearsal. I perform reasonably as well as I can but internally allow myself a bit more close examination of what we're doing and what needs to be worked on for future gigs. With a bigger crowd I'll tend to focus a bit more on the crowd interaction and less on what we're doing so long as it's going down well. We have a rescheduled gig this weekend, never played there before. Just got a message from band member who has called in to drop off posters. he says 'It's tiny, we'll be playing on each others shoulders' so I'm already thinking 'paid rehearsal' before even getting there. But its a new band, need the gigs to iron out some stuff.
9.
Never been, same reason. Anyone go here? https://en.wikipedia...ogressive_Music Look at that line up, if the headliners could not make it, plenty to choose from. (foolishly, I stayed in school to do a bloody exam!)
That looks more like it! However I was 6 in 1970 so I expect it would have rather passed me by. West Yorkshire to Bath? might as well be the moon. I remember going to stay with an older cousin in London around 1971 or 72, it was like visiting a different country.
10. How fashions come back round. I remember people bleaching their own denim jackets in the sink in the 70's.
11. Looking at that list has made me realise why I've never been. A mate of mine went in the 80's when Elvis Costello headlined, said it was one of the most boring sets he'd ever heard headline anything.
12. Saw them with both recent replacement singers and tbh it was starting to look like a tribute act. The problem was that the new original material wasn't very strong either, sounded suspiciously like unused stuff Geoff Downes had left over from Asia.
13. But that's just it, until relatively recently (Drama aside) there had only been 1 singer and 1 bass player in the whole history of the band. Only 3 diff guitarists and 2 drummers since the late 60's, it's been keys that have been more of a revolving door. Other bands have had more changes in fewer years but the Anderson/Squire core was usually there to offer some stability. With both missing I just don't know...
14. I think it'll go one of two ways. Either it will open up a door for Jon Anderson to come back in to try to regain some credibility or the whole thing might fold after the booked dates with Billy Sherwood. I really can't see them continuing long term with both Squire and Anderson missing. It's been looking a bit tired for a few years now. Glad I got to see CS playing some classic Yes on the last tour but it might be time to call it a day.
15. After looking at some of the Glasto footage I don't find it all that bad. I've heard worse. I've heard worse posted by people on this very forum in fact. Some singers do have a bit of a reputation for not being as cock-on live as in the studio, even pre autotune days. Meatloaf i recall went through a rough time. A mate of mine went to see him live at some outdoor job in the 80's or 90's and said he sang utterly flat for the whole gig.
16.
Super good band. Saw them in Preston a couple of years ago and left the show thinking they were going to be massive, and how glad I was to have seen them in a nice small venue.
I thought about this when they were on Jools a year or two back. I wasn't sure how well an act like that would translate to bigger stages and having seen a bit of the Glasto footage I'm still not sure. But then James Brown, who the singer is using as a strong reference, spent most of his performing life as a caberet act. Still an outstanding performer but probably most effective in a more intimate environment. I saw JB in what was effectively a 'festival' type stage set up and he looked a bit lost (though it was toward the end of his life).
17. But wasn't there a thread a while back on here with some voicing near outrage that LR was even appearing?
18.
I know you don't do FB, but there are some good pics up! One of you looking very rock n Roll, despite the flowery flouncy curtains in the background, and some very dubious wallpaper.
I've just checked the fb page and can see the photos (unfortunately!) I realise how dark it really was in that room even with our own lighting and half the time I was struggling to see my PK5 pedals on a brown mock parquet flooring, must get a thin white mat to put them on. I found out yesterday that the venue has always been through an agent so I guess we were doing a bit of a 'foreigner' for the landlady stepping in to fill the cancellation, probably why she didn't enter into talks about repeat bookings.

Shed The Ego

Update - We've now got a replacement date for this Saturday: Sat July 4th - Codnor Inn, Codnor Derbyshire DE5 9RN
20. Hugely influencial, simply found his own voice on bass and was instantly recognisable. Deepest condolences to his family and friends.
21. Not that bothered about her one way or another really but 'Ship To Wreck' has been one of my favourite pop singles this year so far, though I don't listen to much pop any more. What little I've seen of Glasto this year I've found incredibly underwhelming.
22. Bit 'meh' last night but only second gig with new band, still ironing a few things out. It was a pick up gig to fill in for a band that had to cancel at a venue that is always going to be a bit hit and miss and not the sort of place we would probably normally target. I didn't push for a repeat booking, treated it like a paid rehearsal. The locals that were there seemed to like it as did the manager. Not sure if we'll get asked back or not.
23. Here's another of Bert's exotically inspired tunes. I'm really posting this version as it is rarely you will see such an undisguised look of 'This is all below me, I didn't spend five years at the royal academy to end up doing this' from a trumpet player : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUiAhclmvfE
24.
The last 'proper ' fair and square ' ticket I purchased , was when I turned up on a Monday morning at the Albert hall to see jarre. That was approx 7 years ago?! I just waltzed in and purchased a couple of tkts. No frills . It can be done!
I could too at many venues 7 years ago, this has crept in over the last 3-4 in my experience. First time I came across it was 2012 at Nottingham arena. There was unequivocally no way you could pay the (web advertised) face value even if you were there in person with cash in hand. Since then even the smaller venues like Rock City are at it. First it was a surcharge even if you paid with a debit card then the 'handling fee' came in irrespective of how you paid.
25. Usually one bass and definitely one bass amp, though by chance my tone shaping pedal is aslo a DI box so in dire emergency I could go through the PA. There's some stuff i'm never going to have backups for (PK5's, sound module) and once you accept that it's easier to start prioritising what else you can get away with in emergency situations.
