  2. I'd pretty much given up on planet rock so didn't even realise there was a prog programme on it. Mind you with a slot of midnight on Sundays I'm probably only ever likely to hear it on an iplayer anyway.
  3. Yeah the Freds have been going even longer, singer is a Nottingham lad but the rest were all originally west midlands based. Probably nearer 20 years ago the first time I saw them, Running Horse in Nottm. They still occasionally play a pub not far from me. They were OK but used to lack a keys playing bass player so it closed off doing authentic versions of a good few Zep classics. They may have sorted that out these days though, not seen them for years.

Saw and got quite matey with the original lineup over 10 years ago (and got quite drunk with them in Nottingham after doing a bit of voluntary gear humping for them after a gig in Nottingham once). Then Simon the drummer left though I think he's now back and the guitarist and finally Steve on bass/keys went so Billy on vox is the only constant member, think the band basically revolves around him. Nice bloke, started out as a bass player in Jagged Edge for those of us who remember that far back.

It must have been an early pic as I've had a badass bridge on it for years. I also realise it's picked up a few marks since then too but i bough tit as a player not to stare at. Played it last night at ajam session as it happens.   6. With considerate positioning of practice amp and sensible volumes it should be possible to do some practice without headphones. I sometimes need to hear my bass and sound module through separate combos and there are enough cables without a lead from headphones getting in the way (yes I'm aware of wireless headphones) and I always get very sweaty when I have them on. Not had any complaints yet, the small children of my neighbours screaming at each other make far more noise than I do so I already have the moral high ground. Luckily the arrangement of our two semi detached houses means my little practice area in the box room is as far away from neighbours rooms as you can get. Only use a little old Marshall B25 for bass practice, as long as I can hear if I'm playing duff notes that's all I need for that situation. Sound module goes through little Behringer monitor (5'' speaker) I use at gigs,more than loud enough and still clear at the low vols I use for practice. If you need to practice at gigging vols go hire a practice room somewhere suitable for the job.

Though they haven't been asked to turn down yet, I've had bands so loud in adjoining room in current rehearsal rooms we use that it's been difficult to concentrate on what I'm doing in my own playing. I think som eof them do it because they can't play that loud at home and just use it to let off steam. I don't know how it's improving the overrall music product they are trying to promote though. Mostly it just seems to advertise to the rooms on either side what their deficiencies are.

Of course they won't be there every gig but it is useful to do it at some point and then take that on board as building block to work from when you do it yourself later. My new band did this the first time we rehearsed with all our own backline and PA (previous rehearsals were in gear provided rooms though the 2 guitarists take their own combo's). I didn't know the guy they invited (the other 3 had all played together before so I was the 'new boy' in a way) but importantly they trusted his judgement. And one of the first things he said was 'The guitar's too loud'

Yes I agree entirely, little point perservering with a string that you just don't feel comfortable with, you feel you are fighting the instrument before you start, same with some body shapes that just don't feel right to someone in the way they 'sit' into their body/arm positions. Find something you can get comfy with and [i]want [/i]to play, half the battle.
  14. Think there might have been an armed robbery conviction in his youth as well. Truth is there probably aren't many rock n rollers of his longevity who don't have a few skeletons in the closet.

Actually come to think of it I believe it was the same venue, jammy beggar's probably got a free pass or something I guess a lot of those guys within 10-15 years of age of each other from Brum/black country area will all know each other from crossing paths on the gig trail from the 60's onwards. And of course they all bow down to Steve Gibbons
  16. Adam & the Ants - a very clear and identifiable stage presence (eventually) and some very successful catchy pop tunes. There were worse than that in the 80's I'm sure. He'd already tried the punk thing and got nowhere with it.

[/quote] I probably should qualify that all my observations about overrall bass tone are strictly for my 'real world' situations. I play rock n pop covers in pub bands. If I can hear subtle differences in sound in isolation but they are not translated into a difference in sound when I'm playing in the band at gigging volume they are irrelevant to me. I'm only really interested in what the audience hears. This just doesn't apply to strings but changes in pick ups, amps, cabs etc. It's only when they make big enough differences to be noticeable in the 'real world' that they are of any consequence to me. I never practice at home using my gigging rig.
  18. I think I spent a lot of the 80's listening to stuff from the 60's and 70's that I still hadn't heard from when they were originally released. And a lot of it was so good I could then spend the 90's listening to it all over again 'cos that really [i]was[/i] a pretty naff decade I think it was a happy accident that I didn't really get into music even on a listening level until the mid to late 70's and there had been oodles of stuff recorded to my tastes by then for me to catch up on. There's obscure late 60's psychedelia that I've only got to hear within the last 10 years. God bless the internet!

I'd be amazed if there weren't examples of different companies selling the same strings from the same source factories in different packaging at different prices.

[/quote] Someone bought me a set of Roto's for xmas so I swapped them for the Coban strings on my US precision, through my rig in a band context I couldn't hear any noticeable difference. The Roto's were just about done by last month so i changed back to a new set of Coban's. No one at a gig or in rehearsal has made any comment about any change in tone (other than a new set obviously sound a bit brighter for a while). I can't tell any difference in guage between them and the previous set of Roto 45-105's from the feel of them either. Not bothered to try to measure them.

I remember seeing Jimmy Lea just mingling with all the other regulars in the bar at a gig in Wolverhampton in the 90's, I think I was a bit too starstruck to approach him but it sounds like he'd have been alright with it. I couldn't stop myself thanking Roy Wood for all the great music through the years when he sometimes used to pop down to Rock City in Nottingham for the Sat night rock nights. I didn't take up much of his time and he was very down to earth and rather humble.
