1.
Hmmm....I have no plans for the weekend and both of our orders are sitting in Cologne...
Well at least they will smell nice when you get them.
2. I think the neck on my US Precision deluxe was graphite reinforced (vaguely recall it from the official blurb) but it didn't seem to behave any different from a regular maple neck in my experience.
3. Been a while since I saw the documentary. Certainly a character but wouldn't want to work with him. Spent a fortune on stuff (like running polo ponies) then moans he's broke. Complains about what others have earned (from songwriting royalties)but hasn't written much of note himself. Definitely file under 'own worst enemy'.
4. Bought one and sold two and that includes going back to bassworld days. I think I'd already gone through my main GAS days by the time I discovered bassworld (as it was then) and had settled down to a 'buy what I need, sell what I don't' ethos by then, hence only very occasional trading on here. Obviously I don't have much experience to go on but I recall of the 2 basses I sold (several years apart) the first sale went very smoothly but the more recent one was more protracted though once the actual final buyer came forward it was all very straightforward. Got left hanging by a few before that final deal happened though. The 2 sales were so far apart there would be a lot more bc members by the second one so inevitably you'll get more tyre kickers.
5.
One P bass and one Jazz. That was it. Both four string, both USA Standard models.
OK, pretty much got those covered with what I have but I could have a quick noodle to A-B them against my own I suppose.
6. Just out of curiosity does anyone know what happens in public libraries? I assume some sort of artist payment occurs when people borrow an album, any idea what the royalty rates on those transactions are - similar to streaming?
7.
so for the people who sit what do you sit on?
Cheap computer chair in front of the laptop, call up the tunes I need to work through and off I go.
8. After years of wanting a Rick I eventually scraped enough together to get a second hand one in 2002 and I still have it! Didn't take 30 years though, doubt I would have even known what one was in 1972.
9. But if I had the capacity to clearly know what I should be playing but lacked the chops to carry it out wouldn't that make me a poor player but a good listener?
10. It's a shame if there are reliability issues with the modern TE stuff. I've got a 715 combo I'm not even sure how old it is (green carpet era) but I've never had it serviced in the 10 or so years I've had it and it seems indestructable. Had another even older 715 combo before that (black tolex/sharkskin era) and only traded it in because I wanted to upgrade to one that could take an ext cab and work at 4ohms. The new ones do look very pricey, by the time mine packs in irretrevibly I'd probably be moving to lighter gear anyway if I'm still gigging.
11. Thought it was just demos and bands, didn't know there would be instruments for folks to have a mess about on. Which basses did they provide?
12. The fretted side looks like a startled bison wearing wraparound shades. Must reduce my medication. Or possibly up it.
13. There used to be a Rick finish called Montezuma Brown which I used to refer to as Montezuma's revenge. Or simply Shitburst. Also in the 'dislike of Antigua' camp. One came up on eBay a few years ago that otherwise ticked the boxes of what I was looking for at the time but I just couldn't get over the finish to actually make a bid, it can't decide if its trying to be cream or a bit green with a dash of grey or something else. Call me shallow...
14.
I'm not a fan of Talkbass, but that's a bit harsh! I think it's to do with fasting Muslims not being allowed to swallow anything during daylight hours - even their own saliva...
Make them carry their own spitoons and clean them out in the toilets in their own time.
15. Gigging a bass you are really happy and comfortable with is half the battle IMO.
16. It used to bother me but now I seem to be able to swap over easily without it really affecting my playing. I guess the trick is to wear your bass when standing at a height that is pretty much where it is when you're sitting down so the strings are about the same distance away in both positions, works for me. The only time I practice at home standing up is when I'm going through something that needs the PK5 pedals. I stand at rehearsals though so I guess I get enough non-gigging time playing stood up to manage.
17.
30k? in my area in the States if you can make 12k from gigging your doing good. Blue
So you've pretty much answered your own question there as to why so many do it as a hobby and not a primary income stream. If the 12K relates to dollars then thats a little under £8000 at current exchange rates. Assuming you avoided all tax then £8K per annum would be considered a poor income here. Perhaps $12K goes a bit further in the US? If everyone who is currently doing it as a hobby here actually accepted that level of earning I doubt there would be sufficient venues and audiences to accommodate them all if it meant they all had to be out twice a week or more to get that money every year.
18. Yep, sounds like Lou Reed. Never that keen on his 'singing' either. Each to their own and all the usual stuff.
19. Sounds a bit approximate to me, and people go on about Florence...
20. Bought an Advent Roma 3000 a few years back in a PC World sale, still going strong and was pretty cheap. I run a second external hard drive for all my music/photos etc so I won't lose them if the laptop goes down. No serious problems for me running iTunes on Windows7.
21. I think part of his sound at that time involved a Mutron phaser pedal but not sure exactly which model. After doing some digging it appears to be the Mutron III which has been emulated by another company (Amplitude?) more recently as the Mu-III is long gone. You might find this useful; http://miguelbass.com/tag/mutron/
22. They'd have to use a support act. Everyone needs a Can opener.
23. Also need more Beatles/Stones/ACDC/Thin Lizzy tribs. Clearly in short supply...
24.
I wouldn`t want to join a band that only rehearsed that much. If you want to be tight, you have to work at it. Fine as a hobby/bit of a laugh with mates but for a gigging band nope, rehearse every week for me, even if gigging in the same week.
It can be done though(for covers where everyone is clear which ref version we are working from), you can acquire tightness just through real gigging. My previous band that I quit earlier this year gigged on average 3 times per month but in the 2 years I was with them we did 3 rehearsals. Now what I found that DID do was hamper bringing in new material and that was one of the reasons I quit, there were probably only about 6 songs in the set by the time I left that weren't there when I joined 2 years previously. You couldn't get away with it for an originals band probably though.
25. I was the only band member in long trousers and long sleeved shirt at our gig last night. Loaded in wearing t-shirt and shorts then got changed before first set. Helps me focus and get into professional frame of mind to entertain folks. I don't think I'd give as good a show if I looked like I'd just stepped away from the BBQ.
