I shouldn't be surprised (because I'm a bassist), but...
What are you complaining about? You've just been given licence to do whatever the hell you want with your basslines and you know none of them are going to bicker about it. That's the dream gig. Score!
i honestly dont think a great many guitarists and vocalists dont actually realise what youre doing unless you happen to play with a lot of top end and middle punching it through if like me you play with a big fat bottom and no top and mid-mids i concur with all the opinions above that you can pretty much get away with whatewver you please .... a bit like a DJ playing 'dog like sparkey' at an old folks knees up! -
I think it`s a vocalist thing, Muzz. No matter what bass/amp/string combination I`ve used, the singer in one of my bands retort is always: "It just goes boom boom." Like I`m playing Basil f8cking Brush!
try something like "what do you want me to play in the middle 8 when you do the shouty bit?" see how that goes -

Rattling open string and odd harmonic sound?
steve-bbb replied to iBudd's topic in Repairs and Technical
see if a quick string swap solves the problem! have had a very similar problem just recently - a guitar techie mate did a setup on my neck and when i got it back after a short time i noticed a very high pitch harmonic whistling only on the open D and nowhere else - after a bit of examination it turned out it was exactly the harmonic at the position roughly two thirds between 2nd and 3rd fret the nut angle was fine and the frets were ok and the windings so my tech suggested it was most likely string - to which i was initially sceptical - however he removed the d string and replaced it and the problem stopped immediately - just to recheck we put the original string back on and the harmonic whistle started up again because id changed the strings at about the same time as giving him the bass to setup i didnt really appreciate that it might have been the strings and assumed it would be a high fret somewhere or something to do with his setup as i was aware that he had indivisually addressed a couple of high spots on the A/D/G 2/3rd fret area edit- just to add - exactly the same as yours - it was only the open string that made the whistle and not when fretted at all -

that guitar solo is LUSH ....and listen to the way HH listens to the band and just does the most discreet and perfect fills - you barely notice at first that there is a piano in there until you start listening for it
This stuff is entirely subjective anyway, it just represents a coincidental convergance of the opinions of what is probably a very small group.
only takes 30 people for this sort of garbage to be 'legitimised' by lazy hacks

just one more waffer thin bass

saw steve hillage on the OPEN tour at hammersmith odeon i was the only person in the crowd NOT wearing a kaftan (and there was a rather pungent mellow hazy fog hanging over the audience)
The world's best bassline ever is Muse's "Hysteria" as voted by readers of MusicRadar.com: http://www.nme.com/news/muse/60107 Looks like MusicRadar readers should listen out a bit more if you ask me. This bass can be viewed & collected in Hackney. If you decide to have it shipped i will make sure it's packed well inside a cardboard guitar box asking for offers over 10k or your offer will be automatically rejected and then not prepared to spend 1% of the asking price on a decent flight case for delivery ??? WTF maybe seller is banking on the notion that anybody who could afford this sort of wedge for a bass would go collect in person or send their PA?
Totally utterly killer bass player, singer, songwriter and bandleader.... Check this out at about 3:30:-
the other bass player is pretty good too

find a good shop with a good selection of both fender and squier and compare the two unless money is not significant factor in your final choice, id wager a tenner i can guess which one you will end up buying
Hi Steve, I do indeed. Do you think this could be part of the problem?
well if youre heavy handed like i am then the weight of your thumb/hand combined with the slight rocking motion against the pickup is going to pull against the screw maybe - youre basically pulling against the strings so there will be an approximately equal opposite force going through the pickup/body where the tip of your thumb connects with it and unless you play with your hand absolutley still then there is going to be 'some' leverage against those screws maybe a combination of that and what nugget says above - sounds like you might need to plug the screw holes with some slithers of wood to pack the screw in tighter
-
do you (like me) use the top edge of the pickup cover as a thumbrest?
Last time my early Tonebender packed up, it was down to a dry joint on one of the battery wires. Fantastic vintage fuzz pedal
does yours still have the original wiring? that stuff is so thin and brittle im worried it will break just looking at it ! im still at a loss to comprehend hw something so jawdroppingly basic and tacky can produce such a unique sound - guess it must be down to the specific charateristics of the components used
Last time my early Tonebender packed up, it was down to a dry joint on one of the battery wires. Fantastic vintage fuzz pedal
thanks will make that the first point of checking as mentioned on my previous for sale thread i did leave the 9v battery inside but it stayed clean and didnt leak - i cant think that a 9v battery slowly discharging over time would have caused any problems - the only other working parts inside it are the pots themselves and from what i recall it was fairly clean with no crackles - theyd be a bugger to replace authentically anyway too but a wee bit of re-soldering on dry joints should be ok to sell it
-
Could be a bad solder joint(s). It looks to be a very basic circuit design and a fault could be easily traced by someone with minimal skill. But then that puts you in a quandary, does it lose it's "silly money" value if you start re-soldering the joints?
well personally if i was going to keep it and gig it the first thing to happen woul be a complete overhaul of the wiring - its dreadful ! dont know how they had the nerve to charge £26.00 or whatever it was back in the 70s for this
-
been sat in the attic since it was last gigged in about 1982 - dug it out at the weekend placed new battery in and not working anybody any ideas at all what can go wrong with these when they are sat doing nothing at all for 27 years? ive checked the footswitch and give it a clean but apart from the three pots there are no other working parts and in its life between new in 1976 and me last gigging it in about 1982 it had very minimal use ta muchly (previous thread was started on the effects for sale board but going to have to get it repaired/serviced now before sale) http://basschat.co.uk/topic/158129-colorsound-tonebender/
