ive had seasoned felabyers recommend using maximum bid system but make the figure and odd amount of pence as there could be a possibility that someone will make the exact same bid as yourself if you set the figure as a nice whole round number

Would you have prefered to have been born at another time?
steve-bbb replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
I am quite happy to have been born when I was. I was a teenager in the 70s so I was able to see my fave bands at the height of their powers and great they were too. Never saw Pink Floyd though, sad to say. Even now that I've morphed into a jazzer and living in austere times I wouldn't change anything. We have all sorts of fun toys to play with which hadn't even been thought of in the 70s. I may not listen to much 'young persons' music but there is still plenty out there worth listening to. I get more fun out of playing in bands now than I did then. With all of us being older now there aren't the same ego problems around. I wouldn't change a thing. Now, who sang that?
+1 -

For people with more than 1 bass...
steve-bbb replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
i gig both my squier J and my TRB but im fairly sure i could use just the J as it is so versatile and if i had to make a desert island bass choice it would be the J inspite of the build quality and the cuteness factor of the TRB and its stone cladding -
for me - the best bass solo's the one the player thought about doing and then figured the song would be better off without it!! I like the idea of essential bass parts in songs rather than solo's in the sense I think we mean solo. For instance - who can imagine the change in the middle of Fleetwood Mac's 'Chain' without McVie's part? Who doesn't look forward to the four 'solo'd' bass notes in 'Crazy little Thing called Love'? Who can no admire Macca making a very average 'Silly Love Songs' into a far better song by lifting it with his bass line. That's what it's about - listen to your song and make it better.

Exactly this in at least 90% of cases . Very few solos can beat a good " hook "bassline , which is surely far more of a true test of a bass player's skills . Look at players like James Jamerson and Joe Osborn - everything they played was in effect as important and as prominent as a solo , because it was so integral to the song as a whole .
definitely this/these easy peasy lemon squeezy solo >>> 1:23
It may be best to give them a ring, they have to get all the bar drinks there and won't us the steps ( I'd hope) - hopefully they have jeep or something that can help you out at low tide or something. Looks a fantastic venue though
i was just thinking similar to this - maybe there is a jib/winch somewhere for hauling heavy stuff up and down ?

Bassist wanted for small festival gig
steve-bbb replied to paulconnolly's topic in General Discussion
are they famous? i know eminem mentioned them once in one of his lyrics -
some pubs round our way have nights like these where they will showcase noob bands for no playing fee (usually one of their quieter drinking nights so im guessing they figure it will either improve takings over the bar or no difference on that particular night of week) if youve got an area where there are a lot of student/originals bands its often a good way for them to get exposure as without experience and proven track record they are caught in the catch22 trap of not being able to get gigs because they havent had experience/exposure etc etc

Old Music Mag Interviews - SO much better than nowadays
steve-bbb replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
does anybody remember the UK mag from 70s iirc was just called Guitar - was usually quite minimalist cover often with a duotone portrait of the months featured artist -

all this nostalgiarising has prompted me to dig these out of the cupboard for some bedtime reading (not the guitar book though - PM me if you want to make me an offer if youre into masochistic sight reading - i have the SV passion and warfare score too - sorry was from my cheese wire strumming days ) edit - whats the best mag for metal?? dont know ... but i do have issue number one of Kerrang somewhere too -
Do you have your own personaity on the bass.?
The classic story of Steely Dan rotating their bands wasn't so much an A band and a B band... it was the chemistry of the unit that worked and ended up on the track. You may have had a few players on triple A scale and some on a lesser fee ... but that alone wasn't enough to define what worked when.. They could all play..and some.. but they were looking for that little extra.. for whereever they could get it.
Zappa's various line-ups is another example of this - although even this defies logic as he seemingly insisted on keeping an extremley talented bass player who's ego was bigger than the rest of the band put together and somebody as shrewd as FZ must have realised it was a car crash waiting to happen -
