Best place to study jazz bass in the UK?
The Burpster replied to dexter3d's topic in Theory and Technique
You may get more tips in the Theory and technique section so I'll put you in there and see how you get on! -
Well we'll find out now as I bought it....... (and I'm not telling you how much I got it for !!!! ) What I have found out though is that according to the blue book the 5 strings were CIJ, but this is definately a US made beast. It has a low serial number too so I'm going to email Fender see if they can tell me anymore..... It will need soem work doing.. The nut is playable but willl need replacing. The frets wil lbe dressed and levelled although they aren't that bad. Several bits of corrosion are being sorted, and although I will keep the plastic bucket type knobs I'm going to put black metal ones on. It all seems to be pretty authentic, and it has been played a bit, but not abused. As to sound, I have no idea yet as the strings were knacked and it was filthy so it currently being stripped and when the new bits arrive I'll re -string it and set it up. The neck is devine...... Oh and Andy if your source has any more "not very good" recommendations, please let me know...... Does he pick out horses or lottery numbers? Bob.

I am told.... (although yet to try it as it doesnt quite fit in the music I'm playing) that Bart pups in a J with an East (or Bart) pre amp is a pretty burpy set up...... Wouldnt be too expensive or difficult to try if you already have a J : Saves buying lotsa basses 'till you find the right one, as I'm sure there are models with a tendancy to Burp but some will be better than others....

This thred has run its course now and descending into the facile, having received complaints about it which mirror my thoughts I am closing it..

Yer can keep yer mitts orf my basses! they're mine, all mine ...... get it!

12 yr olds can be a massive spread of sizes..... I've seen kids that could pass for 16 at that age and some that look about 6! If you believe your youngster is physiclly capable of the full scale then go for a Yam (the 170 is a fine starter bass, the 270 is a wee bit more refined, however I'm not sure at absolute beginner stage its worth looking above the 170..... interest may only last until January the 1st!...... ). They are eminently easy to set up to play well and thats worth lots. I'm sure theres loads on here with mint beginners books, that can be pased on to help!

Cris, Only you know the answer to that!!!!! Old Horse Murphy just bought a 25 yr old Ric for £1600 and that was really cheap (for what it is). If you can affford it and it does what you want, then yes its worth it..... Are there other less expensive basses that can achieve what the Ric can.....? YEP! Search your soul and wallet and you'll find the answer...... Oh and BTW those guys dont get that sound just with the Ric, they have very accomplished backlines as well... (probably custom made for them by their endorsers!)....
I think they are taking about a balanced load buffer and putting one in the bass will reduce the noise and help match the impedance. Dave
Dave, Match the impedence of the p-ups or teh p-ups to pre amp? Bob.

I threw up in the middle of tonight's gig...
The Burpster replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
If its any comfort thats been doing the 'rounds this last two weeks.... some imported bug no doubt..... Incredible how the buzz you get from gigging will fuel you to do stuff when, normally you'd just curl up in a ball and say, "I've had enough today!" Big Hi 5 to you for keeping going.....! -
DH, There is a thread in (repairs IIRC) about a BCer that has got some new pups, and they have an extra earth when output. When he has contacted the maker, they have quoted that the extra earth is for on-board pre-amps with a buffer. I have a rough idea what a buffer does, but my question to you is:- Have you any idea why some new on-board pre-amps have one built in? and assuming that most amps pre amp stages have one, or seperate pre amps have one, what would there be to gain by having one in the bass? Bob.

Hohner B2b is passive.... (and still available in USA, search ebay, I bought one Jan this year) B2A is Active..... B2AV is 5 string Active. Some early Hohner Jack basses are passive..... Other odds and do dahs as above......

This is not being patronising, but have you checked out the Diasy Rock basses? They are excellently made, and just enough smaller for lesser statured peeps to play. They produce a serious and usuable tone.....

Hummn buffer pre-amps eh?' thats quite clever....... not entirley convinced its neccasary, but I guess lots of folks said that about pre-amps when they first came out..... Oh and explaination is here:- http://www.electronics-tutorials.com/ampli...-amplifiers.htm Hope its not too techie for you! -

To start with is the Blue Book, which if you've never heard of it is like a Glasses guide (the equivilent for cars) for guitars and basses. From an identity and value point of view this is essential. From there its case of tracking down someone whos lived and played with one....... Hence the 'Basses you've owned' thread in the stickies above. Lots of comments on there, and hundreds of basses owned by all of us..... Someone will have had one... I'm not sure there are any blanket warnings that can be attached to buying vintage, as there are too many factors involved in the decision to buy one. GAS is a terrible thing and can be like beer goggles. My advice for what its worth, learn as much about the subject of your desire before you start to look, and then ask a few folks that have had 'em, ask them for pitfalls...... (as you may get 1" its utter 5hite", and 5 "Awesomes" from different owners) If its a pit fall that you can live with...i.e. 'Great bass but the electrics, were put togheter by a Filipino lady boy on 32cents an hour' AND electrical issues are a cinch to you, then that may not be a factor to put you off.... Do you see where I'm coming from?

I apologise and stand corrected..... I'd better get the new one then..... They really are that good!

Not a coil tap then... Hummn extra earth..... Wonder why they have done that....? -
Over a 100 viewings and no comments...... Must be OK then????

Not over-regulated..... just regulated. I prefer not having to pick up the bits after folks have escalated from 'freindly banter' into exchanging insults. Keep it (genuinely) playful and I wont interject (there is no need). I can however detect when folks have had thier cages rattled (part of my job) and I wont have others baiting them. B.

I quite like it..... looks ghostly.... I'm surprised the EMO crowd havent picked up on it!
I tend to buy an instrument because of its sonic character and if it plays well, neither of which are necessarily dependent on the method of construction employed!
Or indeed cost, or name on the headstock! Great point, well made sir!

Never heard of big singles, is the other wire a coil tap? -
I fail to see what the issue is with why an MM costs what it does, and who charges what for it...... This thread is supposed to be about the merits of the ATK....... lets get back on track please folks or I'll have to consider closing this thread as it is not achieving anything.
