I have a great book called "The gig bag book of bass scales" by Joe dineen and Mark Bridges....yes it has scales in tab and notation... but I find thats a great way to learn ......I flop the book open, and learn D Lydian today.... I'm still learning new shapes after 2 years.... dont give up!

A repait may be cheaper and more effective..... However ths would be better in repairs and tech, so that where your orf to!

IMHO..... Maple looks better, feels better and is more versatile as it generally produces a brighter tone.... Its lower mainatainance tooo as it is generally varnished. HOWEVER and this is a big however a bright rosewood board can be brigther than a dull maple board/neck.... see where I'm coming from? In the looks dept, I prefer blonde!

Maybe a valve pre-amp pedal?

I got a set, and put them on my 'tweaked' Ibanez Blazer..... they really are the dogs danglies.... Proper gutteral double bass sound but they still have a nice 'way oop the neck on the G string' sound..... I'm pretty impressed.... (can you tell?) NOW I see why Herbie Flowers only uses these...... VERY rock 'n roll! PS GHS do a set along the same lines (guages) and I'll be trying some of them in the not too distant future!

I guess theres a few famous players out there who have never learnt scales, but learning them sure makes using your fingers properly a lot easier..... you may not subscribe to one finger per fret mode of teaching, but if you do, after all the pain and aching suddenly you'll find one day, your reach is increased, you can pick up notes much quicker, and using all four fretting fingers independantly just works..... IMHO yes its worth the pain and boredom.

FWIW- I shall be ordering a Clover 5 (because I cannot afford a C/S PRS V) in the new year as I need to go lower than E, but cannot be ar5ed with a D-tuner or de-tuning. So the 5th string will be a low B.

I guess it depends on what finish you put in place of the varnish.... I dont recomend sanding and leaving it unfinished! it will be horrid after a while.... Have you tried polishing the neck with a good guitar polish? I wipe my varnished Maple necks after every time I use then but every 6 months or so polish them with (in my case PRS ) polish and then they are lovely and slidey again.... Erine ball makes a good polish too... I'd try that before you take sand paper to it.....

Nik, How good are you with solder? I was going to suggest heating the brass part and putting a small amount of solder on one cleaned side of it. Whilst its still molten, wipe of the solder leaving a very fine residue (or 'tinning') on the surface. it should no longer fit the hole of teh saddle. Put the saddle in your domestic oven on its hottest setting and let it come up to temp. Put the tinned brass insert in teh freezer. When they are both at their extremes of temp. (wearing gloves) take the brass insert out and with a spare screw in it (all the way in so all the threads are used) Gently tap it into the saddle. let it all come to room temp and should be locked in place..... Bob.

Nik, have you taken the saddle off and flipped it over? I can only think that they out a brass insert in to allow it to articulate. I would have thought there was some means of retention for that bush/insert that may have just come undone. If not and it is just a plain insert that fits into the sadle without articulating I have no idea why they did it but an idea for re fixing it.

See I love W's to play and noodle with and that blonde 4 string is sweeeeeeet...... However as nice as the 5 string is undoubtably to play, that phallic top bout just puts me right off 'em........Sorry .

Although we seem to air the ERB topic every now and then, I still find it a bit odd in the 21st century that it appears ok to some to stereotype something that doesnt appeal to them as wrong....... I mean whats next? someone will come on and post a thread stating Black bass players should stick to playing funk and blues? (just try it.....) If you dont understand ERB thats fine, I dont understand drummers! I respect them and I work with them but I dont say they are wrong! You enjoy staying inside the boundries of 4 string... thats fine, but dont say others choices are wrong because they are not your choices ....... Lets put this in perspective, if Col Parker hadnt stuck his neck on the line recording a truck driver with no band, would we have what we have now? or would it still be suits, 4 peice bands and commercial drivel rammed down our throats by a dominant (corrupt) music industry? Rant over.....
