1. This guy has done a few: http://www.3dentourage.com/425/425.htm
2.
Anyone else notice "Made in the USA" has been replaced with "Corona, CA"? I think the little USA flag sticker is also gone. It's a fairly big sign of the times I think, not just with California increasingly seeing itself as a separate entity from the rest of the USA, but also global attitudes towards the USA. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.
Martin did the same thing a few years ago for depressing legal reasons, summed up here: http://www.seymourduncan.com/forum/showthread.php?292248-Martin-Guitars-No-Longer-quot-Made-in-USA-quot
3. Another interesting comparison: http://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/the-tone-garage/flatwound-roundtable
4. Found this too: https://www.guitar.co.uk/blog/fender-american-professional-series-2017/ Looks like they've just tweaked the necks and changed the pickups. But we lefties can get a grey Jazz Bass, hooray!

6. I have a few "String Swing" hangers which do the job nicely.
7.
It would appear that the term 1/4-inch (6.35mm) jack refers to the diameter of the hole in the socket. If you have a plug of the same size it is never going to fit so jack plugs have to have a diameter of less than 6.35mm. How much tolerance is down to individual manufacturers.
According to Wikipedia it's the plug diameter: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phone_connector_(audio)
8.
Me neither. Why on earth would anyone go to the trouble of tooling up to make a slightly oversized version of a decades-old, internationally standard connector? Sounds like utter crap to me - either the story or the connectors. Either way, I'll certainly be avoiding anything from Planet Waves in the future!
All very intriguing. I got out my micrometer and measured the jack diameter of the cables I have to hand: Planet Waves: 6.33mm Fender: 6.25mm Cheap no-brand: 6.20mm Neutrik: 6.30mm The Planet Waves is actually closest to the standard of 1/4", which is 6.35mm. For what it's worth I've mainly used the PW cables for years now with no apparent problems.
9. This is the first I've heard of Planet Waves jacks being larger than standard. Are we talking about diameter or length?
10. I upgraded from a typical cheapo gig bag to a Mono Bass Sleeve and I'm very happy with it overall. I was surprised at how substantial it is; the padding is really thick and it is quite a bit taller and wider than my old one. I find it pretty comfortable, typically walking 2 or 3 miles with it when I use it. The carrying handle is on the wrong side for right handed carrying, and it could do with some protection on the base, although it does have adjustable internal padding to protect the strap pin. The big flap over the pocket is a bit of unnecessary styling. The pocket is huge and is the reason I chose it, as I often need to carry a laptop and/or a few pedals.
11.
Did I read somewhere that at the time McCartney was given his they only did a right-handed headstock? Apologies to the OP for being slightly off topic.
I'm fairly certain this was still the case in the 80s. Of course it's not as obviously upside down as a Fender.
12. He's on tour with Tedeschi Trucks Band in the US. Jonathan Maron was playing last night; pretty good though a bit too polite in places, I thought. But a great show nonetheless.
13.
Yep. I believe Charlie developed and beta tested the Plek system with the company.
That's Charlie Chandler's Guitar Experience, which is still going: http://www.guitarexperience.co.uk/ccgx-repairs
14.
I've loved a lot of his work for many years. 'Erzulie' remains a personal favourite. Who's his drummer at the moment? I saw them in May, missed the name, can't find it anywhere. Great player!
Marc Layton-Bennett
15. Here's a neat one I was reading about recently: http://www.callowhillbass.com/lafave/
16. The old Westone Thunder 1A had a single active tone control with a huge tonal range. There was a passive tone as well, so three knobs altogether.
17.
Wow they are all coming out now, noticed yours has the pro2E jack casting, does it have the earth lift flip switch on it ? is it also french polished ?
It doesn't have the switches. I guess they just were just using up remaining parts when they built it. I think it's probably french polished. Certainly doesn't look lacquered.
18. Interesting reading regarding the "crossover" era. Here's my example, PB1805, which has a solid body of, I think, mahogany, and inlaid stripes on the front and back. I've never seen another Wal quite like it
19. A white Rickenbacker lefty which was in the window of the Sound Centre, Cardiff for most of 1980, but well beyond my means. I often wonder where it ended up.
20.
I think G&L basses are generally under rated. Leo himself is quoted as saying about G&L's ..."among the best I have ever made.." or words to that effect.
The best he's ever made, in fact! http://file.vintageadbrowser.com/xh7daa5vmmrj2j.jpg
21. I've just bought a cab from Dave. Great communications, the cab was well packed and despatched promptly, and was exactly as described. A pleasure to do business with - many thanks!
22. Another Fender Japan option is the PB70 model, if you can find one. 40mm nut, with a '184R' neck, which is 7.25". I used to have one and it was a great Precision.
23. The 1959 Fender Jazz prototype had 5 pole pickups: http://www2.fender.com/experience/guitarchive/the-jazz-bass-guitar-a-history-and-appreciation/ and more recently, their Roscoe Beck bass had 5 pole humbuckers. Of course they never made a lefty of that one either.
24. He's great. "Red" and the UK live album "Night After Night" were big influences when I started. Thanks to the internet I heard Mogul Thrash a few years ago - well worth seeking out. And more recently this turned up - the dream power trio that never was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI9t9KdVNJE
25.
The design of a Wal neck is pretty standard across all models. Multi laminate... Rock Maple, Mahogany, Rock Maple, Rock Maple, Mahogany, Rock Maple. Topped off with a rosewood board or ebony for fretless.
They used hornbeam for the central core for many years. I read that it was dropped because it was too stiff, curiously!
