1. I like them - going to give them a try on one of mine. The basses are nice as well. I have a love/hate thing with Ricks. Love the look but don't like playing them. I persevered for 20 years but don't own one at the minute although I did nearly push the button on one last week.
2. I have vintage Bakelite knobs (probably from a 40s/50s radio) on my Ibanez Musician along with a matching truss rod cover. It was missing the knobs when I got it - witches hat ones were fitted. I knew there was some in the garage and they fitted. They have probably spent more years on my bass than on the original radio.
3. I've got a 79-81 Tokai Hardpuncher neck on a Fender body complete with Tokai logo ( a real Fender masquerading as a copy!! That's for another thread though). The lacquer is cracked for much of the skunk stripe's length and it even stands proud in places. I've had it about 8 years now and it doesn't bother me and hasn't seemed to make any difference to it. The neck is stable and I don't notice it when I'm playing.
4. Good one. Enjoy. I'd be interested to know what the Arena sounds like from on the stage compared to the usually poor sound from in the audience. You're certainly busy - I haven't managed to gig since September. Problems of being in a band where everyone else is in another band - except me!
5. We used to do it pre-digital with tape loops. Had an old reel to reel tape recorder on it's back with spliced tape (there's a lost art!!) stretching across the studio around various mic stands.
6. Easy one - I only bought one album this year. It was Dan Baird & Homemade Sin's Red Wristband Special, so called because Dan was hospitalised the next day with leukemia for which he is still undergoing treatment. Amazing that he made it through a 2 hour gig - you can see how jaundiced he was. It's a really good live album with a few Homemade Sin/Bluefields related bonus tracks.
7. I know exactly what you mean. I started on bass then switched to drums for a few years before going back to bass. I have talked about it to a guitarist I know who sometimes plays bass but he couldn't understand,
8. An Ibanez Blazer - my first bass - sold for £125 as I thought it was just a cheap beginner bass. An Ibanez Blazer 6 string for £50 (quick profit as I only paid £35) A Rick 4001 that I sold cheap about 10 years ago and worth an extra £1k now (it was a dog though)
9. I remember seeing all these around that time but after a quick google all I can find is that the two of them definitely toured with Gallon Drunk in 93 - you say it wasn't them though. Nomeansno maybe?? - played with Silverfish and Therapy in 91 - not sure about Rock City though.
10. Don't know if you're sorted yet but there is a black Shuker P bass body for sale on here. Probably better than a Fender!
11. Can't see any mention of surely the most unwarranted signature bass ever, the Gibson Les Paul bass, although I must admit to quite liking the look. I stand to be corrected but as far as I am aware Les Paul never played the bass. The guitar version though must be the most successful signature ever.
12. If I had to put percentages on it it would probably be 80:20 in favour of the 4 strings. I only really use the 5 as I have a very nice 5 string and am reluctant to sell it. I did use it exclusively at one time but drifted back to 4 strings a few years ago when I rediscovered Precisions.
13. Me too. Borrowed one with a view to buying but it was a natural finish. Loved playing it and it sounded great (I even recorded with it) but...it wasn't black...so I didn't buy it and mistakenly bought a 4001 instead. I know, I know!!
14. Saw him on Thursday in Newcastle. It was a great show but we commented numerous times about the spot operator. It would randomly appear on the rhythm guitarist while he was playing a verse but rarely when it was needed and sometimes it was on nobody at all! Well worth seeing though.
15. Just remembered another nice obscure one. About 35 years ago when the bass player in NWOBHM band Raven left his day job to turn pro, I was brought in as his replacement. Apparently he used to practice every lunchtime in the stationery cupboard. Maybe that's how he turned pro and I didn't - I was never that dedicated!
16.
+1, beat me to it! Eko ( or possibly Kawai copy of one?)
Of course - I'd forgotten about those.
17. Jetglo Rick 4001 - I persevered for 20 years but eventually gave up, Still love the look and sound (and still regularly tempted) but so uncomfortable to play.
18. I learnt to use the mouse with my left hand and now use two. A combination of right hand, left hand and sometimes both together, moving with right hand clicking with left or vice versa. Works for me.
19. You sound like me. My response to everyone being ordered to gig dressed in black and only play black guitars (so we looked like a serious band) was to turn up in a red shirt with a Capri Orange bass - I didn't last long in that band! String silk colour has never really bothered me although I seem to remember quite liking the pale blue of Dean Markley Blue Steels (I think) at one time.
20. I use the GK with 2 x Barefaced 112s and am quite happy with it. One was enough with one of my bands but the other band needed two (they were too loud though). Alternatively TKS are in your neck of the woods and could be worth a look.
21. And cars, although that ones harder to explain to the other half. I once had six - now only three!!
