Depressing things your bandmates say.
el borracho replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
All in a classic rock covers band "I'm going to play those chords in a different order as I prefer playing F before C rather than after it. It's always good to do your own version of a song" "I like my chords to contrast with your bass line" "I know those chords are different to the original but this isn't the original - it's our version" I left! -
Well, after The Tubes last night in Brighton (bloody marvellous as ever) it was to be Gun in the Wedgewood Rooms, on Thursday, BUT had a message from my guitarist this morning while I was rehearsing with another band to say he has the lurgy and can't make the gig tonight so I have his ticket for The Tubes in The Brook tonight instead. ]
The Tubes in Gateshead tomorrow for me.

A black Ibanez Roadster RS924 that I got for my 21st birthday although it would be a close run thing with the 1979 Ibanez Musician that replaced it as my main gigging bass for many years.

What was the first bass you had GAS for?

A Capri Orange Jazz in the window of Ronnies Drum Shop (???) 35 years on I had never found one so made my own Capri Orange Precision (I prefer Ps to Js) -
1980 for me - favourite was pre-Rockin' All Over the World Quo. Still can't believe I got to see them playing songs from that era - twice!
-
I only really know his playing from Bandstand by Family - one of my favourite albums.

I wrote a book about being in a covers band
I was watching Sounds Of The 80's on the iplayer the other day when a rather youthful REM appeared on a clip garnered from the Old Grey Whistle Test.
I saw them 5 days before that was filmed when they played at Tiffanys in Newcastle. I can't remember the bass but can remember his suit as I was wearing something similar myself!
I have also been replaced by another bass player " who has a bigger amp " than me . I received a phone call 3 weeks later asking if I would consider re- joining the above band when they found out the big amp guy was cr@p and unreliable .
"she's better looking than you - and she's got a bigger amp" Three weeks later they came begging when she was poached by another band!
Personally I also rate Drama although a lot of Yes fans disown that album due to it featuring Trevor Horn on vocals instead of Jon Anderson.
I think it's a great album. although I have a friend who is lifelong Yes fan and still refuses to listen to it.
- I liked Madness, but then, they are of 'my time' -
I saw them there in 1986 - that's 30 years - how did that happen??!!
So I cant use this as an excuse to buy a load of new kit?
Of course you can - any excuse is valid

Inspirations for me - probably the bass players I noticed before I ever thought of playing - were, in no order John McCoy Chris Glen Alan Lancaster Stephen Amazing (UPP) Tim Bogert (particularly his albums with Boxer & Marcus)
William.Mysterious from The Rezillos. Check out Can't Stand The Rezillos for evidence.
I once learnt the whole of that album for a short lived band - it took some time! A very underrated player sadly no longer with us.

I had one on a couple of weeks trial in the mid/late 80s. In my opinion it wasn't very good as a rock bass. My Blazer played and sounded better so I ended up not buying it. I seem to recall reading a review in a magazine (possibly an A4 size one I forget the name of) around that time and they thought the same. It was a very nice bass but just didn't tick the boxes for me. At the same sort of time I had a Yamaha BB on trial which I loved. I didn't buy that as I didn't like the finish - I was into black at the time!!
-
My first guitar was a CSL Strat like the one on the left of the picture - same finish as OP's bass. Cost me £95 new from Rock City in 1982. At the time it was looked on, by me and others as a cheap starter guitar and I ended up leaving it at an ex girlfriends. Wish I still had it now!

Sue Ryder - as in the charity shops.

I see there available on Bass Direct and Bassgear now. Anyone tried them yet?

Mines a 1999 and is the same. -
I change about every 6 months unless they have gone too dead. For some long forgotten reason I change the E first then from G down to A. Been doing it like that for 30 years and I'm not sure why!
-
I don't recall them being £700 new either. Correct me if I'm wrong but from memory I thought they were in the £399- £425 region. Maybe there were higher priced models??
For me it's all about the player. Greg Koch gets a tone and plays in a style that leaves plenty of room for the bass...
He does leave plenty of space in his playing. Ironic that he almost never plays a Les Paul! Having already watched this clip countless times I wish he did more often. I doubt Fender would agree!! When I play with 2 guitarists I always prefer one to not have a Les Paul.
