1. I have to agree with Corduroy. Some of Richard Searle's basslines were great. Who'd have thought what he was capable of in his Dr & The Medics days I rather like a bit of New Jersey Kings as well.
2.
It really isn't that costly, when it comes to gear. My first bass amp was not a MarkBass or Genz Benz. My first amp was a Behringer BX4500T head, and a matching 2x10 cab that I bought used for the princely sum of £100, about 7 years ago. Was it excellent? No. But it made suitable noises and kept me going. You don't need to spend a lot to own equipment that works.
I too started at the budget end 30 years ago - Ibanez Blazer (didn't comprehend at the time how good it was), old Carlsbro head, homemade (by somebody) cab and an old Mini with the passenger seat taken out to fit the cab in! The OP on the other hand has an ACG but no cab???? All your eggs in one basket I think
3. I took 3 lessons when I started from a guy called Tommy Duffy who'd been in Lindisfarne, After that I just picked up bits from wherever I could. I did take drum lessons for about 18 months though.
4. I have only had PJ on one bass, an 81 Ibanez that I've had for 30 years. After 20 years of EMGs I have just returned it to standard so the pickup switch is back. I used to use the J pickup as a standby so it will be interesting to try it out again in a band situation and see if I still feel the same way, I suspect it will be the same as after years of using active basses I have come full circle and mainly use Precisions again. Watch this space.
5. Not talking about the lyrics, more the structure and feel of the song
6. Everytime I hear Ship to Wreck all I can hear is Away by The Bolshoi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FzFu-ze8pA
7.
G&L 5 string basses are through body strung and they really ought to be strung that way as if you top load a G&L 5 stringer then your bridge is held down only with the two screws at the side. Through body stringing is part of the structural integrity of the deal.
The only time I tried my M2500 with standard length strings through the bridge there was a visible lifting of the bridge. Very slight but enough for me to replace the strings and go straight back to through body.
8.
I found I was plumping for my bitsa Jazz every time, so I sold all the others.
I'm going through this at the minute. I've used nothing but my bitsa since pre xmas. Haven't sold any yet but thinking about it. I like the lack of worry when gigging it - total cost was £225, most of it on the USA neck which transformed it.
9. One or two I have found unexpectedly busy: Pump It Up -Elvis Costello Good Lovin' Gone Bad - Bad Co It's My Life - Talk Talk - just couldn't get it to stay in my head Flying Saucer Attack - Rezillos
10.
really? How long do you think they should do a first audition for? I think 30min is quite enough to get a sense whether someone may be ok or is a definitely no. Sometimes, you may just KNOW you found the guy within 15 minutes! But that's rare. It's really painful qhen you have a guy for a full hour, that within 15min you all knew was not going to be the one...
Once had 2 hours with a drummer that did no fills whatsoever. He hit a cymbal sometimes but didn't hit a tom once. By the second song we knew he wasn't right so just used it as a useful rehearsal. He said he liked to keep it simple! It was a shame as his timekeeping was spot on.
11. I used to look on there regularly but these days there's only ever one or two results show in my area.
12. I started playing the drums unintentionally. I bought a kit off an ex bandmate cheap and was going to sell it on at a profit, Out of the blue I got a call from a guy saying his band needed a drummer & he'd heard I had a kit. I told him that I couldn't play - at all - and he said "that doesn't matter, come along and learn"!! So I did. That was in 1985 and I still play occasionally to this day.
13. We had a keyboard player turned up who was supposed to have learnt a few songs. The first one had a fairly simple keyboard intro that he seemed to be struggling with so the drummer, who could play keyboards, showed him the line. The keyboard player pressed a couple of buttons & asked the drummer to show him again, then said he was ready to start. We didn't realise he had actually recorded the drummer playing the keyboard part until he just pressed 'play' and stood back with his arms folded waiting for us to join in!!
14. The neck on mine (79-81) is really chunky. A bit too big for my liking. Its also a fake Tokai - apart from the neck the rest of it is a Fender
15.
but weirdly I don't like Fairport that much and go to the pub on Saturday at about 8.00 and skip their finale (all three hours of it)!
Haven't been for a year a two but that's what we used to do. I've probably seen you in the pub on Saturday night! I bet the avid fans think the pubs are empty on Saturday, not full of people avoiding Fairport. To be fair I did like them in the days of Martin Allcock & Dave Mattacks but they seem a bit pedestrian to me these days.
16. I played an outdoor gig on the drums (bit of a recurring theme here), Straight after finishing the set I stood up and knocked myself out cold on a protruding scaffolding pole that was part of the stage. Didn't know where I was when I came round - at which point my then girlfriend arrived to pick me up and started shouted at me for being drunk Ended the night at hospital with concussion.
17.
Can I suggest AC/LZ as your name?
There's a north east band called FM who go out sometimes as LZ/DC so I assume the idea works!
18. Well done that man! Looks like my wiring is as per original which is what I wanted. Right - where's the soldering iron? Cheers
19. I have a Roadster which I am returning to stock after 20 years of active EMGs. It is a passive PJ configuration with 2 volumes, 2 tones & a 3 way switch. Much of the harness is still connected up (volumes & tones in parallel from the switch) but I cannot seem to find any diagrams that are the same. I did find a specific diagram on a German website for this bass but it was different - maybe mines not original?? Anyone know of a diagram for this or a similar config bass?
20. Ah yes - She won't let me explain that me and Kevin we're not the same!
21. My perfect cousin - The Undertones She hokey-cokey til the cows come home
22. Because I don't have that sort of money these days.
23. I was tempted recently by this one on ebay - but not at £600 + carriage + import duties!
24. Most of my favourites already mentioned - but how about Fahrenheit 451??
25. An old favourite of mine - John McCoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOHxtS7G75M
