Are high end basses for investors or musicians?

Some of the clarke/duke project stuff goes well with bread and pickle too but that was the '80s I spose. Ive been enjoying his Toys of Men album on my iphone on holiday recently.

Bass Player wanted for Session Work (Vegetarian)
I suspect a lot depends on how old you are , as much as anything else . I remember when each album that Rush brought out was a eagerly -anticipated event , and the L.P's they delivered - Farewell To Kings , Hemispheres , Permanent Waves , Moving Pictures , Signals - lived up to the anticipation , and exceeded expectations . For me, that set the benchmark for what these three truly gifted musicians are capable of . If you enjoy their more recent work then that is great , but to my tastes they have been in decline as a band for the last thirty years . They've still got it in them to make a great album before they call it a day , though , of that I am sure . I just hope they realise it before it's too late .
Hear hear

GET YOUR PEAVEY's OUT - American Rudy Sarzo Signature
lonestar replied to BassManGraham's topic in Gear Gallery
I liked your bass a lot! But I'd suggest getting some custom pickups made. Aaron Armstrong could make you some very sweet sounding coil spitting humbuckers almost identical to a very, very well known US manufacturer of exotic basses for 90 quid each. If he doesn't have the cases available, you could approach a luthier to make wooden cases. Re: preamps, you have loads of options depending on how much control you are looking for and which preamp best aligns with the sweet spots on the bass. I'd change the pickups first and then see how things sound.
Its sounding a lot better now I've re-soldered the wire back on and the treble tone control is working again ! Thought it sounded a bit rubbish rehearsing last night but should be fine now. -

My other problem is that it's the oddly rated concentric mid/mid shift pot that I can't find a replacement for. It works but is a bit crackly and howls like feedback if you turn it to far. Peavey USA sent me the last one in the world it seems a year or so ago but it was broken. I managed to replace the treble/bass one quite easily. This all sounds a bit technical but I'll look into your suggestions above,(90 quid each sounds good !) if all else fails, I may sell the bass on as a working project for someone to fund another 5 string. -
Some of the Peaveys I've tried can sound a little woolly and a little middly. The TL-5's I've tried are a bit like that but the Sarzo and Palaedium (cheers Chris) are exceptions IME.
I have a TL5. I think you tried it a few years ago at a bassbash a few years ago Kiwi, and yes you're probably right about the tone. Mine has been stripped of the lurid blueburst colour by the previous owner to reveal a lovely oiled natural finish. I keep toying with the idea of changing the preamp and pots as they're a bit flaky anyway ! The pickups are an odd size to change. Other than that i quite like it -

Great post in what has been a very funny and entertaining thread. Thanks Gweb. All the very best of luck with your band project and keep hugging those trees. Will your band be featuring a Quorn section ? Apologies if that gags been done already. I was a veget for 12 years ,Mrs Lonestar still is, but i will now eat anything that once lived I've heard the jokes too and find the 'ism bit the worrying thing about a lot of veggies. -
Been listening to a lot of genesis at the moment
lonestar replied to marcus bell's topic in General Discussion
Love genesis from first album to wind an wuthering. Selling England and lamb lies down my favourites. They were the first big band I saw live. Earls court trick of the tail tour I think with Phil Collins and Chester Thompson on drums. Brilliant! -
Just after I bought it new a couple of them, I can't remember which ones, started crackling even after switch cleaner. Other than that It was a great bass. They did have someone else with a similar problem ordered from the distributor and changed them for me without question while I waited in the shop. Maybe it was a dodgy batch.
The pickups ate the SAME in both US and Tribute models. All US made. To say they're "half decent" in the Tribute is just plain wrong.
I did have to change the pots on my old GL2000 tribute as although the pickups were US the rest of the electrics were crappy korean made. The now defunct east coast music where i bought it changed them to us mighty mite ones for me foc.
To be fair, I don't think we can criticise a band that has been going for this long, providing many generations with a 'rock n roll dream'. I don't really listen to the Stones much, but I have a lot of time and respect for them. Ageing rockers? Oh yes, but anyone critising needs to assess what they will be doing at 69/70. Most likely, sat at home commenting on other bands and playing in local bars, (that's if you are lucky!). There will be a time in 10-15 years when the legends won't exist anymore. We won't have big classic bands anymore, just thousands of small NME bands who capture audiences for one album then disappear. That's happened in my lifetime, and I'm only 32. The only 'big' bands who might be going are bands such as REM, Coldplay, Muse, and big pop acts. I'd hesitate to add Kings of Leon into that list as they don't qualify. They were pretty damn brilliant at first but I don't think they will reach that stage. Good on the Stones for still being alive, still rocking out, and still captivating a huge audience. I hope I can be as lucky when I'm their age.
Er i think REM have called it a day
