1.
Ive only owned one Mexican bass, a P bass. I took it as part ex on a whim. It was pretty bad and I wouldn't have bought it had I checked it out first. But, I've had two Mexican Strats, one was very good, and I regret selling it, the other, an early 90's one, is the best sounding and playing Strat I've come across.
I have a mexican strat that I bought in 1993 it plays really well, probably nearly as good as my mia one if Im honest although the hardware and pickups arent any where near as good. Id think mods to a S/h mex bass as Deep Thought's above would make it well worth having I did have to try quite a few to find a good 'un when I bought it though

 4.
oh, have we had the Dead Grateful yet?
I tried out for a covers band in Bury St Edmunds with this moniker years ago when i was a guitard
 5.
Things are well underway with Jon and the spraying will be happening soon. As my dear nan departed I've decided the decal should be her name which rather happily happens to be Miriam or Mim to everyone who knew her. So... the headstock is going to have "MIM" written on it which is a happy coincidence as it started life as a Mim fender Here's a rough mockup! My design skills are near non existent so any ideas are quite welcome
Thats a really nice touch
 6.
Dont throw away old strings, put them in your gig bag. You never know when your gonna need them in an emergency
Or take a spare basss
 7.
When joining a covers band, find out if they are actually going to learn the covers properly as per the original recordings or merely turn up to rehearsal having done no preparation whatsoever, wing their way through the entire set and say 'that'll do - the punters will be pissed up anyway'.
Or make the feeble excuse " it' s our version" because they can't be a££ed to learn it
 8.
Great band, seen them and they are fab!
Their version of All round my hat is brilliant
 9. I saw one of these in pmt Cambridge on fridayand was intrigued by the brand. So it's a Stag then ?

 13.
You're all wrong! It'll be something with Moog, Roland, Oberheim, Sequential Circuits or similar across the front it. Or if we're talking after 1983, a Yamaha DX7!
Or a Fairlight
 14. Aria through neck SB something or other
 15.
Why does the drummer get a solo? Drummer know thy place! Who does he think he is!
I didn't last that long

 17. Some of the clarke/duke project stuff goes well with bread and pickle too but that was the '80s I spose. Ive been enjoying his Toys of Men album on my iphone on holiday recently.
 18.
...with a tuber holding down the bottom end?
Would it help if I played a Hagstrom Swede ?
 19.
I suspect a lot depends on how old you are , as much as anything else . I remember when each album that Rush brought out was a eagerly -anticipated event , and the L.P's they delivered - Farewell To Kings , Hemispheres , Permanent Waves , Moving Pictures , Signals - lived up to the anticipation , and exceeded expectations . For me, that set the benchmark for what these three truly gifted musicians are capable of . If you enjoy their more recent work then that is great , but to my tastes they have been in decline as a band for the last thirty years . They've still got it in them to make a great album before they call it a day , though , of that I am sure . I just hope they realise it before it's too late .
Hear hear
 20.
I liked your bass a lot! But I'd suggest getting some custom pickups made. Aaron Armstrong could make you some very sweet sounding coil spitting humbuckers almost identical to a very, very well known US manufacturer of exotic basses for 90 quid each. If he doesn't have the cases available, you could approach a luthier to make wooden cases. Re: preamps, you have loads of options depending on how much control you are looking for and which preamp best aligns with the sweet spots on the bass. I'd change the pickups first and then see how things sound.
Its sounding a lot better now I've re-soldered the wire back on and the treble tone control is working again ! Thought it sounded a bit rubbish rehearsing last night but should be fine now.

My other problem is that it's the oddly rated concentric mid/mid shift pot that I can't find a replacement for. It works but is a bit crackly and howls like feedback if you turn it to far. Peavey USA sent me the last one in the world it seems a year or so ago but it was broken. I managed to replace the treble/bass one quite easily. This all sounds a bit technical but I'll look into your suggestions above,(90 quid each sounds good !) if all else fails, I may sell the bass on as a working project for someone to fund another 5 string.
 22.
Some of the Peaveys I've tried can sound a little woolly and a little middly. The TL-5's I've tried are a bit like that but the Sarzo and Palaedium (cheers Chris) are exceptions IME.
I have a TL5. I think you tried it a few years ago at a bassbash a few years ago Kiwi, and yes you're probably right about the tone. Mine has been stripped of the lurid blueburst colour by the previous owner to reveal a lovely oiled natural finish. I keep toying with the idea of changing the preamp and pots as they're a bit flaky anyway ! The pickups are an odd size to change. Other than that i quite like it
