1. Just found this and I'm knocked out, ace. Why were you lot not about when I lived nearby and went to all the Bees home games? More vids please and get up north for a gigs.
2. Wow, that's bloody brill. Going to download your 1st album and I too want to see you live. Keep us informed. Great stuff.
3. This is my year of birth bass (YOB), stunning. Have a I'm skint bump on me.
4. I am a Fender nut and I like the look but not the price. I just wish that Fender would have had the balls to bring out a brand new design to mark this anniversary. Something that says that was our history, this is our future. Take the best of the past and design a bass that other manufacturers would say, damn, wish we had thought of that, just like 60 years ago. I know it won't happen as Leo got it right first time round. .
5. Wow, that looks lovely. You've done a great job there.
6. What car would you compare your bass to? A supercar custom job or a Leyland. Sorry if this sounds a bit Talkass. Oops, missed a B.
7.
Hate to even think about being so 'pro gaga' but Madonna doesn't stand a chance in the talent contest. Have you seen Gaga play piano and sing in different styles?! It's quite amazing for a popular artist to A) look so normal as in girl next door and B )be able to write, sing so well and play instruments with that much talent. I didn't think much of her until I started to hear about her past and her musicianship.
She's Prince after the sex change.
8. Like this a lot, I would come to see you live if you can let me know when your gigging in the NW. The other half is now asking why I don't play stuff like this rather than " the load of headbanging crap" that I play.
9.
Because 'fashion' dictates that, at this moment in time, there are more Fender-haters around than normal. What you really 'need' is a boutique Bass, that costs more than my mortgage, looks like a broken Curly-Wurly chocolate bar, and sounds middy, honky and toneless, like most other boutique Basses out there. That gives you an excuse for never-ending G.A.S., in the quest for ANY kind of amplification that will make it sound decent. OR.....you could try a Fender, and see if you actually like them. I did, I do, and I've used them almost exclusively for 53 years, apart from the odd excursion into silliness, from which I subsequently recovered. (and don't get me started on the 4, 5, 6 string argument)
This. I could not agree more.
10. Get a Fender P bass and an Overwater by Tanglewood Jazz, that will cover you for any gigging situation. Keep the high end gear for home and studio if you are worried about them.
11.
He's a human Roadworn in a world of Affinities.
Just caught up with thread too, Skank, I take my hat off to you, Priceless.
12.
After reading the Fender thread, Happy Jack's P bass thread & a couple of other threads, I thought I'd pose the question that the Mrs asked me last night whilst I was oiling my bass's body (the Mrs wouldn't let me rub Danish oil on her body, so it had to be)... What makes a high end bass worth the money & where's the difference to justify it over a good sub £1000 (or even a good sub £500) job? Is a £1300 Fender P 5 stringer as good as a £1300 Dingwall Combustion & is a £2k+ "copy" P bass from the likes of Overwater or Sadowsky any better than a Fender P & actually worth the difference? & why do I need another bass when I'm happy with my Ibby (other than wanting 5 strings & no frets)? Well? Hopefully with the right ammo I'll talk her into letting me get a custom made Ritter Raptor
Just ask her with she needs so many pairs of shoes, always works for me.
13. Right you lot, off the settee and get practising, I wont tell you again.
14.
More people are skint, and are unloading basses that are worth decent money because they need to is my guess. The problem with "Vintage" Fenders is that some of them might well be old and all that, but often they're really not very good, and IMO overpriced. I sold my old '78 Precision, admittedly a year or so ago for around £850/900 from memory, and that was a good 'un. They seem to be going for well into the thousands at the moment, which I don't get and won't pay, because I don't think they're worth it. I've played some absolute dogs from the 70s. "Vintage" does not always mean "Good".
Spot on. I've played some dogs from the late '60's and '70's that guys have payed top prices for. Just look at some in Denmark Street. Rip offs.
15. +1. I used to use Chandler's for years when I lived down south and they always had some great Ricks and other quality basess there. They also have great but expensive techs, I used to get my basses serviced by them. Top guys too.
16. I'll be interested in the replies to this as I will be in the same situation in a few months ( I hope).
17.
What finish have you selected?
I think Dave's going with the same again, black body, but it's his bass now so it's up to him, I'm just looking forward to seeing the photos after owning it for 15 years.
18. Thanks for putting up the link Clarky, I should have thought of that. It is indeed Dave's Roger Waters build and a great job he has done of it. Top bloke. He is going to refinish the '57RI I traded for this so looking forward to seeing the results of that. I'm sure it will be stunning.
19. I traded my '57RI with cd_Dave today and got this. What a finish and a great player too. One very happy bunny. Only downside is that my RA is giving me hell for playing it too much but another trip to hospital on Wednesday should sort me out for another few weeks. Just had to tell someone as there's no one at home today.
20. Just completed a trade with Dave for his lovely P bass, stunning guitar, what a finish. Dave's a top guy and a pleasure to deal with.
21.
That's not nice gub, whoever you are, let me teach you a lesson of life, and that is that you don't overstep the mark, with that sort of jokes with people you don't know, those kind of jokes "might" be acceptable between known friends, but definatey not between strangers. So no, I haven't got ocd and your humour is not appreciated and well out of order.
I don't think any offense was intended.
22.
As short as possible. Can't stand the "clank" you get with longer nails.
This. I keep my left hand nails short too or it justs feels weird when fretting. I like clank with a pick, not finger nails.
23.
God, no! I,ve no disrespect for anyones music! I,m just after some tips from folks who have done these gigs
Slap the arse off it.
24. I just want to say thanks for all the great info that can be found on this site. I had never done a full set up before, I always took my bass to a tech to sort out any problems. I could put on a new set of string but anything more was out of my comfort zone. Recently I have my '57RI P to bits and replaced some parts and thought that a visit to a tech was next but I saw this thread on here that gave me the info I needed to do it myself - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=133612&st=0 . I would never have had the confidence to attempt this before but the result is amazing, I have set up it up exactly as I like it and cost me naff all. A BIG thanks to Basschat and it's members for just being soo cool. Sam PS. A donation will be made next payday by way of thanks for saving me money in the future.
