1.
Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. The verse part is pretty straightforward, albeit with some timing subtleties. But the notoriously tricky horn break (which repeats every chorus) was a right b*st*rd. Took about four hours to nail it. Being able to play it is sweeeet though, and now I'm annoying the hell out of my girlfriend with it. Sounds great on a Precision.
Great bassline! I'm never sure if I'm playing the little run in the last chorus right (the one that starts with the Fm arpeggio type bit) but hey!
2. I currently own 3 fretted Jazz Basses, 1 fretless Precision, an Ibanez 4 string and a HB Beatbass - covers my sonic needs perfectly!
3.
Difficult considering he died in 1981.
Whoops! I wonder if his family still has a hand in the company?
4.
'sometimes I can not avoid the fact that I just like the sound of cheap mass produced gear'
Great point. I like to take quite a simple approach to bass playing, passive basses through simple 3 band EQ preamps. The most liberating experience I've had recently with regards to bass was playing a Squier Jazz through an Ashdown Electric Blue practice amp - it sounded great!
5.
That tonika bass, apart from the shape of the body, looks a lot like the bass the guy in flight of the conchords uses. I wonder if he's using a soviet era bass then? Interesting.
That was my initial thought too! I'd love to know what type he actually uses, I'd buy one just for comic value more than anything else!
6.
I play Blues
Same here, and I LOVE it! Although it's quite a simple form of music, it's amazing what the right group of musicians can do with it. I know I basically use the same basslines and fills for the entire set though
7.
Are you the Moderator? I've come on this forum by mistake
Stop saying that, Warwickhunt, of course he's the moderator! To the original poster - cracking bass, I know a guy locally who owns one just like it and it sounds fantastic!
8. Sounds almost chorused, with a 5th above added in parts - any idea how he achieved this?
9. I tried one of the new line Hiwatt 200w Bass heads a few months ago in a music shop near me - absolutely superb tone through the matching cab, but I'd imagine that would be forgotten about after lugging the thing to and from gigs! If I had a roadie, I'd probably still be saving to buy it as we speak! And I wasn't aware that Dave Reeves was producing a new Bass head until now, it looks awesome!
10. Yes, they are essentially the same head. Have a look at THIS PDF file and you'll see that all of the specs are exactly the same, it's just the small change in cosmetics that's the difference! Hope this helps :0 Danny
11. Congrats on the deal While we're on the topic of Vintage basses - I don't think I've seen anyone play so many duff notes confidently than the guy demoing the EST96 MM copy that they sell, has anyone seen that video?
12. Managed to blag a VIP ticket to see them in Belfast a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't a huge fan before seeing them, but what a FANTASTIC live band! Managed to get a pint with Bobby G and Mani afterwards too in the backstage area, top guys!
13. I think that a few people have over-stepped the mark when expressing their views on the subject matter. By now, we have all realised the wrongs of the Jakebass' actions. I think that any further commenting on the topic would simply serve to escalate the hatred towards a forum member, and this is not a practice that we as a Moderation team condone. Thankfully, the situation has been more-or-less resolved. Those who have generously volunteered to handle the exchange and delivery of the item in question are firmly in contact with each other by now. I assume that those who hold particularly strong opinions on the matter (as expressed on the previous few pages of the thread) are also in private contact with each other, and so this thread simple serves as a public outlet for these negative feelings. This thread has been posted in the 'General Bass Discussion' forum, and will remain here as a guide for Shockwave and others to keep a record of the guitar's progress back to it's new owner. However, there is not much more that can be done to improve the outcome of this situation. As a consequence, this thread has been locked. Lastly, I'd like to extend a very meaningful thanks to all who contributed to the delivery fund. This shows that the community are much more than just a bunch of people who post on this forum. Thanks, Danny
14.
...why?

Berating Jake says more about those who need to keep on doing it than it does about Jake himself.
15. IMO it's just a horrible synth-like mess compared to his earlier tone as heard on Live At Leeds etc (which was fantastic)! But each to their own and all that
16. There are a lot of recommendations for round, flat and half wound strings in THIS thread that might save you a lot of time Danny
17.
Over the last few years I've gone from an active bass with 3-band EQ with switchable mids into a rack preamp with 'aural enhancer' and 4-band EQ with dual semi-parametric mids, to a passive bass into a rack preamp with no EQ other than a handful of presets. It was a slightly scary couple of leaps but I love where I've landed! Join me!
Interesting approach, I've made a similar leap from 3 band EQ active to passive and keeping my amp options as uncomplicated as possible. There's nothing that can beat a brilliant, simple tone IMO, although I suppose one man's great tone is another man's noise (John Entwistle's sound in his later years springs to mind!)
18. Just type your band's name into Myspace. How many serious bands do you know that don't have one?
19. Bass Parts Resource - good selection, good prices and fast delivery. As with all Fender scratchplates though - you may find that the screw hole positions are slightly different as models are updated/upgraded over the years, if you're worried then getting one custom made might be an option to consider!
20.
I'm studying options at the moment and I have an idea of what I'm looking for, but I'm open to trade suggestions before I make my next move. Neos, ceramics, single cabs, pairs... try me...!
I bet a cab with some 12's would make those Jazz and P Basses sound sweet!
21. Everyone has their own brand bias - justifiable or not. Isn't that what discussion forums are for?
22.
I was gigging in Guildford one night about ten years ago when Mr Foxton walked into the pub. Funnily enough, we were in the middle of an acoustic set and we were playing "Tube Station" as he came in! Anyway, he stood at the back of the pub and watched us until we finished our set. Then he came over, bought us all a beer, and sat with us 'til we had to go back on. He was a really nice guy, very modest and unassuming, and it was a pleasure to talk to him. I've seen him a few times since around and about and he still remembers me each time. Top chap.
Great story! It's always a nice thing when your favourite players turn out to be genuinely decent guys.
23. They definitely do have a lot of work to do if they are to be held in the same stead as companies such as Trace and Ampeg, but FWIW I do have a lot of love for their amplifiers (that I've tried anyway)
24. I hope all of this criticism can be justified when the amp is released. Remember that Mark Gooday had a hand in designing Trace Elliot amps when they were made in the UK, and remember the big 8xKT88 amp that they made? If it's anything like the V8, Ashdown will have taken a step forward. I know that most of their business comes from the fact that they have a mountain of endorsees in the UK, but my EVOII 2x10 combo does sound brilliant nonetheless despite my non-pro status!
25. I believe he also used an Ibanez 4001 copy for some of their stuff? Top quality bassist, really underrated.
