1.
Mornington Cresent
You shouldn't have been allowed to announce that without first collecting the Easy Pass at Euston surely?
2.
Danny Thompson
+1. What a fantastic player!
3. I'd recommend using a cabinet with 10" speakers, or a very efficient 12". You'll want as much articulation as possible when using an acoustic instrument - mud is definitely not your friend! Why the change of instrument? It'll be a bit strange having a 'john_the_guitar' around here
4. It's not the size - it's how you use it! I think we all go through that 'big amp = good idea' phase though, thankfully I'm out at the other side and still have a reasonably functional spine
5. Played a dep gig last night with a local classic rock band. The venue was pretty small (I'd say 150 max would be a comfortable number to have inside it), but there must have been 300 people there! We were playing in a corner with our backs pretty much against the wall, and there were people standing and dancing literally 2ft away from where I was playing. Caused a bit of hell with the mic stands from time to time but it was a unique experience! Showed up without any practice and no setlist beforehand, but it went great! Standard pub fare really, I'm sure there's a band like this in every town in the country. Went straight from my Bravewood Jazz into the desk and had an onstage monitor to hear myself - it sounded great. The guitarist was full of compliments for my tone too, I just solo'ed the neck pickup with the tone up full and I got a very meaty, Precision-like sound. The Wizards really do work their magic in a live situation! Feeling pretty chuffed today, their bassist (whom I filled in for) has a lot of other commitments so I might score a few more gigs in the coming months! Danny
6. At the moment I'm working my way through Jamerson's part in 'What's Going On'. I think I'm slowly getting closer to understanding his playing style, but I'll NEVER be able to play it with one finger!
7.
Wizard!
+1. You can get one wound to your own specifications for the same price as a standard, just tell Andy what sound you'd like and he'll work his magic (pun very much intended)
8. I'd love to go but it's way out of my price range - I might try QUB to see if they're sponsoring anyone to go to it though
9. eBay is your best bet unfortunately! You can sometimes snag good deals for all-in PA systems, packages that include everything you need to get started. I've just had a quick browse and saw THIS, but there are of course many other options available around your budget.
10.
I don't know what they haven't developed a user programmable EQ... or have they?
I have one of the most recent iPod Touch models (whatever gen that is, 5th?), and they still haven't included this function which would be a great tool IMO. I *think* that there's an unofficial app you can download that has this functionality though. As for the headphones - I've been using Sennheiser CX300s now for around a year and they're excellent value for money. I'd recommend buying them from an offical Sennheiser dealer though, as there are a lot of fakes out there unfortunately.
11. My GAS has been heightened YET AGAIN by this thread, cheers guys! I hate having no money
12.
I'd be interested to know who Jamerson's greatest influences were. Anyone know without me doing research?
I'm not exactly sure, but I'd take a guess that they are mostly upright players, since that's where he started. Anyone?
13. I don't play double bass, but the first 6 Pentangle albums are simply astounding. Check out the live version of 'Haitian Fight Song' off Sweet Child if you can, brilliant!
14. Is it just me, or does Jamerson look really uncomfortable and tense in this video? Superb bassline though!
15.
dont know the bassist, he was using a guy called 'linus of hollywood' previously, who is also phenomenal!
That guy is INCREDIBLE. That live session they did where they're all dressed as astronauts is an immense watch!
16. This might get a more informed response on the Recording forum, I can move the topic for you if you'd like? Danny
17.
i wish i'd never sold it!!! im a complete idiot sometimes!!
It's still baffling me on a daily basis! The finish has turned to a proper cream, almost tobacco-stained colour now, lovely
18. Unfortunately eBay is probably your best bet. Remember to search Worldwide, as parts sometimes turn up in the most unlikely places!
19.
This one: Not exactly a copy though.
Wow, that bass looks spectacular! I trust it's active? What pickup did you choose?
20. I quite like them. I didn't like the new song when I first heard it, but it has grown on me over time. Vocals sound a bit like QOTSA in parts, as do the chords in chorus progression (if you can call it that) Production is very strange though, for a band who make hundreds of millions a year.
21.
Right, I have a Mexican Fender Jazz (left ofcourse!) and compared to the all star amercian Fender Jazz the only realy difference is the neck! correct me if i'm wrong! However, does anyone know where to get necks from or am I just wasting my time??
I believe there are other differences in hardware and perhaps even finish/quality of woods used, but I'm not an expert on Fenders! Can someone on here verify this?
22. For the music you've said you'll be playing, I suspect that the 115 will suit your needs better. A 2x10 cabinet will more than likely have more high end frequency response, but for boom and bass, the 115 will definitely win. The ABM cabs are generally held in higher regard than the MAG lines, although you might find you prefer the sound of one over the other. Ideally you'd be able to try both out, side by side, but alas, this isn't always possible!
