1. I think the Rickenbacker own-brand strings are very highly rated, if you can get hold of them that is!
2. They've actually got a slightly bigger model bass case for those unusual shapes, ie the Burns Bison, I think they're know as the EBS Peardrop or something?
3.
I'm currently working my way through a book titled 'Simplified Sight Reading for Bass' and it's brilliant.
Just had a look at that on Amazon and it looks ideal for my needs at the moment too - ordered! Many thanks for the heads-up Danny
4.
Elixir strings...are fantastic
+1. I've tried a number of different brands over the years but have always reverted back to Elixirs. The tone is consistent, and they have a smooth, finger-friendly feel that you just don't get with some other brands.
5. Looks to be in mighty fine condish for a 36 year old bass! If you're that concerned about the frets, it might be worth getting them looked at by a luthier? Perhaps a dress/stone?
6. If a bulk order was going ahead, I'd like to try the following - 1 x Medium Flatwounds 1 x Medium Stainless Roundwounds Maybe we should get a potential order list put together on the thread?
7. Sounds like a Jazz Bass with a Boss ODB-3 pedal, or some other variant of fuzz?
8. I think this is the same model that Andy Lewis (Paul Weller's touring bassist) uses, at least I think he used one when I saw him live last year! Have a bump on me for a lovely bass!
9. Seem like quite good value, I'd almost certainly be interested in trying a set of each if we could get some sort of bulk order together? At that price, I can't afford NOT to order them Danny
10.
The only potential negative that I can see (and this may not even be a negative) is that there are 2 holes drilled in the back of the body where I'm told there would have been some kind of a plate declaring maybe which shop supplied the bass
This isn't unheard of actually, I've seen quite a number of vintage basses (admittedly mostly Hofners though) with this 'addition', so the story might well hold up. Apart from that, it sounds like a lovely bass, best of luck if you do go for it! Danny
11. And the winner is - Looks a bit generic to me? Personally I much preferred these designs - I think I might actually have bought one had they won! Oh well, the Warwick playing public have spoken
12.
I have a modded Geddy. I LOVE it.
Let's see a pic! Your Geddy looks awesome IIRC
13. I believe the Jaguars are also MIJ? As far as hardcases go - I was considering buying a Fender one recently (in that lovely brown tweed they do), but in the end opted for a Hiscox Liteflite, which has just taken my bass to London and back safely! Also, they're a bit cheaper than the Fender ones depending on where you buy. Hope this helps! Danny
14. I would imagine that a set of 64s would give you closer to a JPJ sound than the 84s would, based on experience of the latter.
15. Yep no problem, it could be a while before the recording is completed though, it's currently being mixed and mastered! I'll let you know as soon as I have it. Danny
16. I don't think it's possible to buy a new machine head that has been relic-ed, but authentic vintage tuners frequently appear on eBay. Just try a search for 196* tuner or something similar and you'll find a number of parts along those lines!
17. Played one of these in a local music shop last week for 20 minutes or so, just to get used to the ins and outs of it really. My initial impressions were that it was a very comfortable instrument to play. I preferred to anchor my thumb over the end of the neck to get a boomy sound, which perfectly complimented the flatwound strings. It was a used bass, and the previous owner had had the stock pickup replaced with a Bareknuckle version, which meant that the output was slightly higher than normal, but tone-wise, it was pure classic Precision. As has been said above, I don't think I'd buy one to use exclusively, but it would certainly be a good addition to any player's arsenal, if only for looks alone! Danny
18. It sounds like they're made to sound even darker than the 84's, which would be VERY dark indeed! Recorded today with my Jazz Bass (w/ 84s) through a 4x10 cab and it was very middley, almost brittle sounding when played with a plectrum. Not quite sure I'd have a use for anything darker than that, but I'd be interested in hearing them anyway! Let us know how you find them if you do go for them. Danny
19. GREAT bassline! I love the little jumping bassline when Gillan screams 'I LOVE IT' etc, I think it's over the A chord?
20.
I emailed Genz Benz with a question about the unit and got a reply almost straight away from Jeff Gensler himself - so customer service seems excellent so far!
A definite +1 from me on that too, been emailing Jeff quite a bit recently and he seems a gentleman!
21. Great bassline, just make sure you emphasise the I and VII before it if necessary to give it that funk!
22. It's just a standard walking bassline in a I-IV-V format, in E I believe, so the chords would be E (four bars) A (two bars) E (two bars) B (one bar) A (one bar) E (one bar) B (one bar) As for the walking part, it's just basically major arpeggios in the traditional blues format, which in tab form would be something like this - E G|-----------6-| D|-----6--9----| A|--7----------| E|-------------| ...and similar structures for the other chords in the sequence. To string the arpeggios together, just throw in a few passing tones in between, walking chromatically up and down from chord to chord. And there you have a simple introduction to blues bass playing in general! Apologies if I haven't been very clear, it's late at night! Hopefully this will go some way to helping you, and the rest of the theory heads will be along soon Danny
23.
Bernadette: The Four Tops
+1. It was a great introduction to the Jamerson style for me and remains a favourite to this day!
