Another sign of the times, I think. Over the past year, two jam nights in my town have stopped, simply because the bar owners don't want to have to pay out money (or give free beer on some occasions) on nights that a crowd isn't guaranteed. The thing about most jam nights is that they eventually turn into the same house band playing the same set, which owners again aren't particularly fond of when they can book a different band every weekend for the same price. Sad to see them go, but I'm sure there are still a lot of successful ones running around the country - maybe not on our doorsteps though!

Fender '51 re-issue - bridge and pick-up query
If I'm creating a solo I'll often sing a line along with the backing track chords, then learn the line on the bass. This gets me out of my fingers' normal tramlines. I also add in octave jumps (Some-where over the rainbow) and other attractive melody features that I've heard in vocals and other instrumental solos...
That's one of my favourite techniques for writing basslines. If you look at some of the old Jamerson lines and such, his playing is so melodic that it could in essence be a vocal line and still have a catchy, sellable quality. It also helps when you're trying to come up with a bass part which forces you to play slightly differently from your usual go-to notes.

Just why is blues so important when learning bass?
acidbass replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
As I moved out into rock & pop, funk & prog, I was surprised to find the same blues licks turning up everywhere ... just played a bit differently.
I think this is why it's recommended to learn the blues - I found the above statement to be very true too, even in folk and modern traditional music. The blues always gives you a good basis to fall back on when playing or writing - and blues bass guitar also helps develop the basic rhythmic element of our instrument. -
It's very different when you are depping. You can get the "This is how we want it" treatment, so as they are paying they get what they want.
This is largely the approach I take, as most of the time I'm a hired goon to perform a certain task the way the MD wants it. I do enjoy playing in another band with a few mates though, where we all have equal input and frequently suggest ideas/comment on each other's playing. It's certainly something I had to develop at the start, being 'told what to do', but generally as I grew up it became easier.

Welcome, Emmet! Great to have you buddy!

+1000 to that. They are truly the benchmark company when it comes to supplying strings - I have ordered at 4pm and received strings the following day, and as I'm across the water this is no mean feat I can tell you! I'll continue to use them until I give up playing I think!

Modulus Flea basses. Why so unpopular all of a sudden...?
acidbass replied to Beedster's topic in Bass Guitars
They were/are (depending on your perspective in time) great pickups but the Seymour Duncan Basslines MM pickup made only for the Modulus Flea/Funk Unlimited Bass is a copy of the original Lane Poor pickup that Modulus asked Seymeour Duncan to make after Lane Poor went sadly out of biz... There's a lot of hype and voodoo/mystique about the original Lane Poors which can get to be a tad OTT so I would just honestly advise people to bear this in mind as the current MM pickup for the Modulus bass is as good as and a lot less expensive than the pre-owned Lane Poors being touted around. But if a Lane Poor is what is wanted...the choice (very limited!) is always there. Ciao Ian
I posted a thread not that long ago about the revival of Lane Poor as a company - I believe one of their technicians has bought the brand name and is now continuing to make pickups to the same spec. -
Always admired him too - I love his playing on 'Born On The Wrong Side of Time', so simple yet so brilliant! Must have been a tough job backing one of the best lead guitarists ever, and he did a damn fine job IMO. Another cracking line - 'It's Happened Before (It'll Happen Again'. Brilliant! Off to Spotify!

Bought one a few years ago buddy - great bass for the money! Set of Black Nylons on it and you have instant McCartney

Yes Greg, it was posted last week - have you not received it yet buddy? Hope it doesn't go missing yet again!

Best plectrum control i have heard in years
acidbass replied to allighatt0r's topic in General Discussion
Super! Reminds me of something from a 70's cop movie or something, really impressive bass playing! -
I instantly found myself grooving along to that song, head bouncing and everything, without even realising it! Great song and a video that some people would pay a LOT more than you did for! Will keep my eye on you guys in future, best of luck bud!

I think the ad is fine here, although your responses may be somewhat limited as I don't think vocalists frequent this forum as much as they would Gumtree, Starnow etc. Best of luck though, it'd be my ideal bass job too

What impresses you more? Fingering or Picking
acidbass replied to Basska's topic in General Discussion
I'm more impressed than a nice groove and feel from a bass player, rather than being concerned about how he physically plays it. A great line is as great if it's played on a cheapo Encore copy with a pick, as it is on a Fodera with fingers IMO. Danny -
Did you get that off Chrisdabass a while back? Absolutely beautiful. I just got hold of a Bravewood fretless and am very impressed by how good it is. Nick
Yes Nick, I did indeed! Had been lusting over it for a long time and when I saw it was up for sale I just had to take the plunge. Superb bass! Any pics of your fretless mate? Danny -
Been very busy over the last six weeks learning 60 songs (only 3 of which I'd heard before!) for a new band, as well as Footloose The Musical - the title track of which has some fantastic bass playing!
Cheap and effective is the Digitech x-series bass driver, if you're not a total tone snob this is a very versatile and good sounding bass overdrive. I've recently bought a Bass Big muff and love it!! so +1 on that!! Its Brilliant!
+1 on all of the above, I found that the Digitech pedal was quite similar to an ODB-3 but with a bit more tonal range. The Big Muff is a fantastic pedal for certain moments too but by no means something I could use regularly! Brilliant for an all-out fuzz fest - add a wah and become Cliff Burton incarnate!

Hello all, Does anyone know which size of Hipshot Ultralite tuners can be retrofitted to a standard Fender Jazz Bass neck (specifically the MIJ Geddy Lee model) They sell them in both 3/8" and 1/2" diameters, but after much searching online I can't find the answer for the life of me! Can anyone shed some light on this? Regards Danny

THIS is the best song I've heard all week, not so much for the bass playing, but the sheer power of the chord sequence and the fantastic piano, key change, everything! Going through a big 'Dan phase at the mo

acidbass replied to Clarky's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I noticed that he also does (or used to do) un-relic'd replicas so I read right through his website looking for details. That obviously included his FAQs.
He does indeed - check out my lovely 1960 Jazz Replica. It's actually finished to a superb standard, and it has aged very nicely, similar to a Fender nitrocellulose guitar would.
