1. Ouch, I can't imagine it would be a nice environment to work in! By all accounts, he's a right tosser.
2. It's a great scene to get into. The band you've joined definitely sounds like the right move for you - any good band knows not to undersell themselves to get a gig. After all, once you're known as a high-end band that doesn't mess about, then those are the bookings you'll attract. A few tips? Hmm 1. Crowd enjoyment is key, but enjoyment of the manager/person who booked you is even more so! Of course, if the crowd loves you, this does help influence his/her opinion of you too when he books acts in the future. 2. Always confirm before the gig how long you're playing for and start/finish times, so to avoid disputes at the end of the night. 3. To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is to not turn up at all! Will probably think of a few more before the end of the day, but until that, best of luck with the band and enjoy yourself! Danny
3. Welcome! There are quite a few of us from this side of the water on here - nice to meet you!
4. I think the Hartke 2500 is 2U, and the tuner 1U, so you would need a minimum of 3U. Always a good idea to buy one or two spaces more than you need though, so to allow air flow throughout the rack case (prevents the amp potentially overheating). You can then blank out the extra spaces with black rack panels. Maybe 4U?
5. Maple generally has a bit more top end than rosewood, but depending on the bass you might not notice a huge difference as there are loads of factors which contribute to overall tone. My personal preference is rosewood - although my bass of choice has a maple fretboard, it's the only one out of the six I have!
6. Great tune, never heard it before! Many thanks for sharing!
7.
So, am I being over cautious, is the fact it's from Germany incidental, obviously the guy that started the thread wasn't bothered, any opinions, good or bad?
I've used Thomann many times and never had a problem with the delivery (touch wood!). I think they have a returns policy too if there is a problem with your product but thankfully I've yet to use it.
8. I've always loved the range of straps that Corvo make - they can make them to whatever length you like and the designs are funky! Hope this helps your search
9.
I love the look of those Rickenbacker 4005. Oasis always do have cool looking instruments
Yeah I love the vintage vibe that seems to surround them, particularly on their earlier stuff! Saw 'em on their last tour and the bassist was using a Rick 4001 (or perhaps a 4003, couldn't really make it out from where I was standing. Good taste son!
10. LOVE the 4005 that Liam plays in that video, and the sound on the record is one of my favourite recorded bass sounds to date (although I'm not 100% sure that it was definitely a Rick they used, could stretch to 95% though!)
11. How do they compare to other coated strings, ie Elixirs (if you can comment?) I've been using Elixirs now for just under a year pretty much exclusively, but would certainly be interested to know if the EBs are in any way comparable in terms of quality/tone.
12. You might want to consider installing an active preamp to give you more treble before the signal hits the amplifier, something like a J-Retro? As for pickups, I think the EMGs should be fine for the tone you're after, but maybe look at the likes of Bartolini too to widen your options. Hope this helps Danny
13. In Northern Ireland we have a host of great small timers - two that immediately spring to mind as being influential too me are Aidan McGuigan and Sumi Kal. Both incredibly understated in their playing, with an appreciation of groove and holding down the low end as opposed to technical wizardry. Top notch IMO!
14. Yeah wouldn't mind a read myself if it's still around
15. He is simply incredible!
16. Nice one, sounds like a great idea!
17. Townshend does have that lackadaisical playing style these days though - seems to alternate between on and off-beat when it suits him, same with his vocals. Doesn't make it sound like it does on the record but I think they're past the point of trying to prove themselves as rockstars and are just enjoying themselves well into their 60s. Fair play to them! Pino = incredible, did any of you catch his bass playing after Roger's scream in Won't Get Fooled Again? Superb, melodic, totally different from what JE would have played but still fitted perfectly with what Zak was doing. Of course, they'll never be a direct replacement for John and Keith, but they do a damn good job!
18. I've always had a soft spot for the Ashbory basses - they're supposed to sound cracking too despite being so small. Another one to add to the list?
19. I actually really like the look of those Bootsy models, but the price does seem a bit ridiculous. I'd be very surprised if they sold more than 50 worldwide.
20.
Nope From the Planet Waves Website FAQ.......... Will plugging in one of your directional cables the wrong way harm equipment? No. While the ideal configuration for optimum shielding is achieved when the shielded end of the cable is connected to the amplifier, you will not harm your guitar, amplifier, or other equipment by running the cable the wrong way.
Ahh very good, nice to know for future reference. Danny
21. I actually have a lead which says the same, is yours made by Planet Waves too? I never really pay attention to which end goes where, but I *think* the shielded end is for your guitar, and the other for the amp. Could be (and am probably) wrong though
22. Beautiful. Whoever ends up with this will be a VERY happy bass player!
23. I had it before Christmas as I was performing at it, but didn't photocopy it mate, apologies. It's pretty simple as far as musical scores go actually!
24. Footloose Sweet Home Alabama Le Freak Angels
25. I generally try to keep mine around 50-60% on the meter - if it's constantly going into the red, it's probably not good for the preamp, unless of course it has a valve in it which you want to drive. Your bass must have a super high output BTW?
