  1. I went to see them around 2000/2001, they were amazingly good. I didn’t scream.
  2. That’s a great rack system there, main and backup amps in one case.
  3. That’s one of those questions, I’ve had both Laney guitar and bass amps and got great sounds from them, def strange they’ve never been more visible.
  4. I`m fairly brand loyal, in various set-ups I`ve had: Ashdown 210 & 210 ABM PRO NEO Ashdown 410 and 210 ABM EVO IV Marshall 410 & 210 Ampeg 410 & 210 HLE Hartke 210 & 115 XL Markbass 112 combo & 112 ext spkr I`ve always had the cabs from the same range as well, for both sound and OCD reasons
  5. You know official Basschat tee shirts with this on would be great
  6. Aside from rock n roll endings pretty much not at all in my case.
  7. They are quite a workout, maybe first off try their low tension flats, that might be an interim solution that could work for a while.
  8. Yeah I had this some years back, happened when I set the gain too high on my GK MB500, backing it off from 8 to 7 sorted it.
  9. For that sound yes, a Jazz bass of some sort would be best as that’s the bass being used. For the budget as Paul suggests Sire, Squier and Harley Benton all worth checking out.
  10. Next gig will be The Darkness in Oxford next Saturday. Also booked tickets to see Florence Black in Islington O2 in September - saw them supporting Tremonti a couple of weeks back and thought they were great (best band of the evening imo).
  11. Yep Mustang bass would be my suggestion too, mainly because I’m in a similar position, I’ve an arthritic left thumb. I’ve got the Fender Japan versions which have a very slim neck so a doddle to play. And like you @toastieman I’m a Precision man and find I can coax a similar sound from the Mustangs. La Bella do a set of Mustang flats too.
  12. Nice setup
  13. If I recall correctly one of our members @CiciBass did a great review of a Schecter bass a couple of years ago - think was a Jazz type bass. Certainly sounded good on the review.
  14. I always put these type on my cabs, makes them a doddle to push about
  15. Yeah the JJ one is fairly weak, if he weren`t playing a Stranglers bassline possible not many would think it was meant to be JJ. For me as well as the blown speaker it`s valves, I`ve always found it much easier to get near the JJ sound through a valve amp, there seems to be a chunky but smooth aspect in mids in valve amps. Many years ago I had a Dave Hall DH1 and it did that nicely. Of course a lot of it will be down to how he was playing at the time, angry young man playing angry new music.
  16. Looks great @Clarky, I’ve been thinking of one of the MIJ Precisions too, quality instruments.
  17. Given JJs pretty famous sound I’m surprised he hasn’t put some form of Sansamp in his rig, it would def get nearer to that tone than he currently gets. Unless of course he wants to not be quite so full-on nowadays.
  18. That looks awesome
  19. I’ve not used any Blackstar gear but I have been at a gig where the backline was provided by them. The bass rig was the same as @peds above and it sounded really good. I knew the bands playing too, so could tell if the sounds obtained were what was wanted and the setup covered them all well.
  20. Ha, yes sat-nav invariably takes you to the other side of the wall - a case of so near yet so far.
  21. To me upgrades are things that make the instrument better, such as Hipshot tuners for stock Squier ones, or putting in higher quality pots and jack-plug on the electrics. Pickups can be subjective as one players better can be another players worse and different colour scratchplates, well that’s just different.
  22. Yep decent venue that
  23. I think of the Jazz bass as looking very cool. Prob down to a mate of mine who played a 70s Jazz in black/black with maple neck with blocks. Low slung it just looked the business.
  24. That’s my new approach. For years I’ve really dug in and played hard but over that period the hands have taken a battering so lighter strings, thinner pick, lower action from now on.
  25. He arranges all of his plants in steady rows of eight
