  1. Next gig will be The Darkness in Oxford next Saturday. Also booked tickets to see Florence Black in Islington O2 in September - saw them supporting Tremonti a couple of weeks back and thought they were great (best band of the evening imo).
  2. Yep Mustang bass would be my suggestion too, mainly because I’m in a similar position, I’ve an arthritic left thumb. I’ve got the Fender Japan versions which have a very slim neck so a doddle to play. And like you @toastieman I’m a Precision man and find I can coax a similar sound from the Mustangs. La Bella do a set of Mustang flats too.
  3. Nice setup
  4. If I recall correctly one of our members @CiciBass did a great review of a Schecter bass a couple of years ago - think was a Jazz type bass. Certainly sounded good on the review.
  5. I always put these type on my cabs, makes them a doddle to push about
  6. Yeah the JJ one is fairly weak, if he weren`t playing a Stranglers bassline possible not many would think it was meant to be JJ. For me as well as the blown speaker it`s valves, I`ve always found it much easier to get near the JJ sound through a valve amp, there seems to be a chunky but smooth aspect in mids in valve amps. Many years ago I had a Dave Hall DH1 and it did that nicely. Of course a lot of it will be down to how he was playing at the time, angry young man playing angry new music.
  7. Looks great @Clarky, I’ve been thinking of one of the MIJ Precisions too, quality instruments.
  8. Given JJs pretty famous sound I’m surprised he hasn’t put some form of Sansamp in his rig, it would def get nearer to that tone than he currently gets. Unless of course he wants to not be quite so full-on nowadays.
  9. That looks awesome
  10. I’ve not used any Blackstar gear but I have been at a gig where the backline was provided by them. The bass rig was the same as @peds above and it sounded really good. I knew the bands playing too, so could tell if the sounds obtained were what was wanted and the setup covered them all well.
  11. Ha, yes sat-nav invariably takes you to the other side of the wall - a case of so near yet so far.
  12. To me upgrades are things that make the instrument better, such as Hipshot tuners for stock Squier ones, or putting in higher quality pots and jack-plug on the electrics. Pickups can be subjective as one players better can be another players worse and different colour scratchplates, well that’s just different.
  13. Yep decent venue that
  14. I think of the Jazz bass as looking very cool. Prob down to a mate of mine who played a 70s Jazz in black/black with maple neck with blocks. Low slung it just looked the business.
  15. That’s my new approach. For years I’ve really dug in and played hard but over that period the hands have taken a battering so lighter strings, thinner pick, lower action from now on.
  16. He arranges all of his plants in steady rows of eight
  17. Great tones @thebrig, and great playing too, what’s the bass in the No More Heroes clip - Lakland of some sort?
  18. Yeah agree, he still sounds like JJ by his playing style but that famous aggressive tone of the early years has gone.
  19. Congrats, you’re going to have to put some graft in but I’m sure it will be very rewarding
  20. Well as usual a great rehearsal. Took along a Precision for the first time in ages and although it hasn’t given either my back or arthritic thumb any problems I’ve found that in a band scenario I now prefer my Mustangs, whereas at home it’s still my fave Precision that gets the vote. Great, fave bass at home, light easy to play bass for band, sorted. And for those who laughed, am now gonna watch Eastenders!
  21. We’re rehearsing this evening, normally I really look forward to rehearsing but it’s the live Eastenders 40th Anniversary episode tonight.
  22. Mono M80 Guitar Double - it’s what I use for gigs with my 2 Mustangs.
  23. Good score, MIJ Fenders are great instruments
  24. In my last band we were regularly asked to pose with people for photos, sign merch/set-lists etc. All part & parcel of it I suppose but at 50 plus and being rather uninteresting (to put it mildly) I always felt a bit of a fraud doing this.
