  1. Painted necks Mismatched amps & cabs - but not if the cab brand don`t make amps Stickers on basses - look great on other peoples basses, but not on mine Amp/cab overhang Blue basses - I don`t support Chelsea Green basses - I`m not Irish Pau Ferro - just looks like an imposter that`s failed to master either maple or rosewood properly All of the above are completely irrational
  2. I`ve found that my US Precisions seem to put the needle into the red on the hardest notes with the Input Gain at 3 o`clock. This with the Shape enabled, and Valve Drive fully on.
  3. Just sold James a bass. Did a meet approx half way for the handover as we`re about 150 miles apart and of course had a good long chat about basses/music/gigs etc. Great transaction all round.
  4. Yep that`s how I ran my ABMs and my current RM500, I find it`s a much better, fuller, more dynamic tone this way.
  5. Back in my post-punk years in the late 80s chorus was never that far away from my bass sound.
  6. I think it depends on both sound and the feel of the bass. Some just don`t like actives so that may be a factor. I`ve played (and owned) Squiers that when set up properly play like a dream. The sensible option of course is to simply play both on a visit to a music shop and buy the one that gave the most enjoyment when playing. Years ago I bought a Squier VM 77 Jazz bass, one on a long list of basses I really shouldn`t have sold as it was one of the best Jazzes I`ve ever played.
  7. In my old punk covers band The Daves we played a local venue where we went down amazingly. Unfortunately a lady and her husband that we knew had come to see us, she was very drunk and started a fight with him, yelling at him very loudly in the middle of the pub. When he left she started yelling at anyone who made eye contact she would fight them too. Her broad German accent made the behaviour even more noticeable in rural Watford. We could hardly say we didn’t know her as she had a Daves tee shirt on. No matter how many times we tried to get gigs they were always fully booked…..
  8. Kathy Valentine (The Go-Go’s) - All I Ever Wanted Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols) - Triggers Sami Yaffa (Hanoi Rocks) - The Road Bends
  9. They’re a great band, I’m sure Charlie will be giving Keef a run for his money as he seems to be going on forever, and Alvin Gibbs on bass is simply immense.
  10. Gallien Krueger Plex, as Duff used GK amps, and a chorus pedal of some sorts will get you well into Duff territory.
  11. Am getting envious chaps!
  12. I used the Nux 5.8 one for a while, but for the amount of gigs I do I moved it on and just went back to my trusty old BOSS WL20, any issues I`ll swap to a lead.
  13. I bought the Fender, returned it after one rehearsal as it sapped a huge amount of low end from the sound. At home volume levels it sounded good, like some compression was added and just regulating the lows, but with the band it was like there was a filter removing anything from 120 and lower, took all of the oomph from the sound, and adding bass on the amp didn`t really solve it. Shame, it was a nice bit of kit and as BRX says easy to identify the transmitter/receiver - one of the reasons I bought it as middle aged eyesight needs all the help it can get.
  14. I played a mates one very briefly and was impressed, it just felt "right" if that makes any sense. And yes, thinking about it the Flea, Nate & JMJ are all Mexican reliced signature basses, and the ones that get rave reviews pretty much everywhere.
  15. It’s amazing how that rattly driven tone sounds so warm & rounded in the mix.
  16. Amazing the amount of overdrive/fret-buzz & rattling there is in the original.
  17. Or have a change of thought on the role the bass takes in this particular band, moving to a more supportive instrument laying down a rock solid foundation with the drums. A band I really like that had keys was Rainbow and the various bassists although they played interesting lines they were def supporting the rest of the band really well.
  18. Yeah about 80/20 neck/bridge does it for me, there’s still the thump but it’s not quite as bulky in the mids as the Precision.
  19. I think the main thing for me is to acknowledge my TT is essentially a Jazz bass and not a Precision so get the best I can from it as it is, rather than chase what it isn’t. It was a good sound but much deeper than I’m used to, tho as the rest of the band said the overall sound was better, with the guitar really standing out.
  20. Agree, for me it was about 80/20 neck/bridge that got me where I wanted to be.
  21. Just got in from a rehearsal with my classic rock band, using my new Sandberg California TT SL. Went well though as it’s a jazz bass configuration I struggled a bit with the sound as am so used to a Precision type sound. However at the end the band said how good they thought the sound had been, with better separation on the instruments as my bass was lower/deeper. Was a dream to play though, and being 6lbs it was so easy on my back, don’t even feel like I’ve been at a band practice, was def a good purchase.

  23. You can play any music on any bass, and at the point of starting out as you are, getting the bass that feels best to play will only help you to get better. I don`t know anything about the Ibanez basses but fret buzz can be down to poor set-ups or needing a fret-level, which any decent luthier should be able to do.
