1. Thanks Trevor, very interesting test that was, with a very surprising winner too.
2. I`m not an effects person, Sansamp Para Driver is it, but if I were to use effects I`d figure that my preamp pedal is doing a similar job as the amp, therefore as I`d go effects to amplifier, if using a preamp pedal it would be effects to preamp to amp. Not saying it would be right, just that`s how I`d figure it.
3. I spoke via e-mail to mark at Ashdown last year re this, and he said that the aim was to have an ABM in a pedal. Given how highly I rate my ABM600 if this pedal manages trhat it should be a cracker. That price however, up against Tech21 and DHA is a bit steep, but against Darkglass, which have such a good reputation, not so bad.
4. In my younger years I never looked after my bass, it was gunk-city - or even gunk-sub-continent - on the fretboard/bridge. I`m now the other way, I change my strings every month and clean the bass at the same time.
5. Missing a gain control, otherwise would be the perfect pedal for me.
6. Just bought a double gig bag from Simon. Great comms all round, swift delivery, item very well packaged.
7. Gig every time. Having a bad back has taken more enjoyment out of sh*gging for me than it has from playing bass. Plus I wouldn`t have to spend a whole evening pretending to care about my bass`s work colleagues/tea-club/holiday rota/shoes etc. Not hard to see why I`m single, is it?
8. So many variables, but essentially they will all sound like a Precision, as Tim says, subtle differences, but still Precision-like. The only one I`ve had that was radically different was a 78 ash/maple Precision. It was so aggressive, for the older Basschatters out there, the easiest way to describe it is it was like Rev Ian Paisley, it barked at you.
9. I had both a real Stingray and a SBMM Ray 34. Not really that much in it between them. The Stingray was slightly less harsh in the sound, but that`s sortable with eq.
10. Agree, given that many gigs are with many bands on a line up, the less gear to have to set up/break down is a bonus. Clip-on tuners are ok to a point, and cut this down, but an on-board tuner makes so much sense.
11. Depends on wattage I suppose, not that much needed as just on-stage sound. Hartke Kickbacks have a good clear sound, may be worth checking those.
12. To me where is the point of playing covers unless they`re crowd pleasers? If it`s a cover that no-one knows then you may as well play an original song.
13. Which given the out of place placement of the writing on the neck above would indicate maybe not all is right with this one. The Japanese Fenders are reknown for their quality control so looks a bit dubious.
14. It`s doable but it will reduce the number of bands willing to take you on.
15. I`m not sure I know of any with a rosewood board that have that width, pretty much all of those seem to be maple, Road Worns, Classic 50s, Roger Waters etc.
16. OK, update time as have finally got round to using my RM cabs. As I do a fair few gigs where the rigs are miked up rather than DI`d, I decided to get another 210, as I prefer to have both cabs with the same size drivers, if my sound is made up of a 210 and 115 each cab will more than likely be bringing something different, so which would I mic up? Anyway, to performance: Pretty darn chuffed is the verdict. With my Ashdown RM500 head/Sansamp Para Driver the sound is pretty much the same as through my ABM410 cab, I just have to back off of the input gain to about 11 o`clock rather than at midday with the ABM, and with the bass back it off to about 11 o`clock rather than the 10 o`clock with the ABM. Once that`s done the sound is virtually identical. I get all my eq from the Para Driver, so have everything on the amp at midday, aside from those two mentioned. I don`t know how loud they will go, but I`m in an Oi/Streetpunk band and we`re not that quiet. My volume on the amp was at less than 9 o`clock (the RMs are loud little amps) this being the same as when using the 8ohm ABM410. The cabs weren`t farting out at all - in fairness I put a lot of treble/upper mids and drive on my sound, think Duff/JJ, so not a hell of a lot of lows to push the cabs, but at no point did I think they weren`t going to handle what I was throwing at them. They gave a good presence, the sound having plenty of bite to it, but still holding down the lows, like I said, think Duff. Overall I`m really pleased with them, they give me a much more modular set-up for gigs when space is an issue in the cars, plus a nice and easy set-up to rehearse with. For my regular gigs I`ll stick to my ABM600 & 410 set-up, but great to have the RM set-up in reserve. Edit - so once I`ve paid my subs again (am sure they`ve run out) I`ll be putting the 115 up for grabs.
17. The guy we`ve always dealt with is Rulie, and he`s a really decent bloke. The management there are also nice, I can`t remember the land-ladies name but she`s been there for long time and is very nice to deal with too. This sounds like some sort of campaign to me, especially as everything has miraculously gone now.
18. Aaron bought a Sansamp BDDI from me. Good comms, swift payment, and advised that the item had been delivered, something that I always appreciate. Good transaction all round.
19. Very surprising, as the Ashdown RM500 I have is incredibly loud, seems that the lack of power thing must be inherent to the Retroglides then. I`ll echo the thoughts about the ABM600, I have one, the EVO-IV version and it`s an amazingly good amp.
20. If I`m successful I`ll have a new Precision incoming that has a Steve Harris pickup in it, which I`ll be looking to offload.
21. Probably Clarkys Pino Sig Precision, it was just effortless to play. Likewise with the Road Worn Precisions, if only they did a black one........
22. I`m of the opinion that whilst still able to shift it, have the best heavyweight gear you can get - unless you prefer the sound of the lighter weight gear of course. The DBS were great amps, never heard the cabs, but up until now have never heard a Marshall bass amp/cab I didn`t like. Keep it while you can still cart it about.
23. The Maze is a pretty good venue, does punk etc.
24. As we gig far and wide, and most of the time don`t know what is available locally, whatever we can find is what we eat. Preferably just after sound check, give the grub time to go down. For myself, having a stomach ulcer means I have to eat little and often, so I bring some choccie bars & biscuits with me to the gig as well.
25.
Thanks for you input Lozz. I'm loving the tone hammer pedal I got from you. Do you still use a tone hammer head? If not what made you move on? Thanks
Hi Crawford, glad you still love the TH, pretty decent pedals. I`ve moved on to Ashdowns with a Sansamp Para Driver DI. I used a few Ashdown amps as provided rigs and just preferred the sound, it seemed to have more of a thud/attack to it, so switched across. I still get basically the same sound mind, but on-stage it just seems to react better to my playing.
