1. I skipped from page 1 to 18, and saw the discussion had moved on to porridge. We may have missed a turning!
2. I have recently left my band and they are looking for a new bass player. Gigs are mainly functions/pubs, with the main emphasis being on 70s music. They also occasionally do a Bowie tribute. Links to Facebook and website are here: https://www.facebook.com/thespiderz/ https://www.thespiderz.co.uk/ They are a fantastic bunch of guys, and this really is a great, no hassle, gig.
3. My last gig with my band last night. A few songs in an elderly lady came up to me and asked if I could turn my bass down as it was affecting her pacemaker! This is a new one on me. Does anyone else have experience of this?
4. Queens of the Stone Age at the O2. Bass sounded awesome. Will be in the queue for Finsbury Park tickets next week.
5. I've only been in one band where we played songs that I regularly listened to. Result was that I didn't enjoy listening to them anymore. However, often playing songs I'm not familiar with has also really opened my eyes to artists that I'd previously not had much time for. Bowie being one prime example. The audience reaction is a major factor in how much I enjoy playing a song.
6. I once saw him do a clinic where he was plugged direct into an Ampeg, using just the P-pickup. Still sounded like him. I don't think that there is an album that really does his live sound justice, though.
7. We had a drunk woman fall over a monitor last night, slamming the microphone into the singer's mouth. Not good. We also had a dep drummer (which I don't really want to get into). Fortunately, we got through it.
8. I'd also agree with Discreet's advice. I think everyone in the band should have some influence over the songs, but your post makes it sound like the keyboard player is getting quite a bit of influence. Maybe you should also consider - did things need a freshen up anyway? and is this just a way of getting the new member settled in/feeling at home in the band?
9. Whilst not virtuoso stuff, I think that there are some interesting bass lines from each of the players you mention. The bass lines on the Cult's first album are far busier than on Love or Electric, so I suppose it may come down to 'serving the song'. I would also say that they execute what they do very well (ever heard of a bad AC/DC or Quo gig?), and it is also harder than you think to get the 'feel' right on Quo numbers. Would love to see a Michael Anthony or Cliff Williams bass clinic though.
10. Could listen to him all night. Excellent stuff, thanks for posting.
11. Looks kind of mid-way between the two to me, so you're both wrong/right!
12. Won tickets to see Motorpsycho tomorrow. Any fans on here?
13. This is one of my faves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPTEOpOb844
14.
Blimey... presumably he doesn't go out after dark?
There is a guidebook called 'Home Truths - a Jaunt Around the Decaying Heart of England' that describes Braintree's inhabitants as "the ugliest collection of people in the UK outside Wales" and where "a good number of its female inhabitants resemble sea monsters". And no, I don't go out after dark. It's like an episode of Seventies-era Doctor Who.
15. No. I tend to get 'Braintree singles' and 'Russian dates'.
16. It's funny how many covers bands end up gravitating towards the same stuff, despite the very best of intentions! A difficult lesson I had to learn in a previous band was: if you're not the singer, you are essentially part of the singer's backing band. I believe there are only a few exceptions to this rule.
17. You've got three yesses - you're through to the next round!
18. Being honest, I would like to be able to slap in a tasteless way like a typewriter. I'm sure I'm not alone.
