Ooh I like that a lot! It will look right and still be useable for normal gigs too, I'd rather have one of those than my normal acoustic I think!

I live 15 minutes away from Toft's, Helen is in charge of bass repairs there and did a nice emergency sound post replacement for me a few weeks ago.
NO!!!! That's disgusting!!! You're right, of course. I guess the pros align the amplification of the bass along with the fact that there are mics on everything else. So why not amp up the bass? But, where DO you draw the line?
Oh my line went ages ago, my upright has a mag pickup and a 900 watt amp with a 2x12 cab under it

Well as a one trick pony Stingray player I must have only one option surely? Pick, fingers, slap, thumb, near the neck, near the bridge, palm muted, then all those with the treble up or down, not swapping and changing your gear every five minutes for the latest fad bass means you can get the tone you want without even listening to it, I know exactly how far to turn the treble pot when swapping between pick and fingers for example.
That is true. Acoustic they might be, but without an amp you won't hear it across a bar. Nice gig though. Worth a watch. My personal opinion is if you're going to have to plug in, then why fool yourself that it's playing acoustic?
Where do you draw the line though? Even classical soloists use piezos or microphones then go through the PA.

Old Czech Double Bass advice
Completely agree with the above. I've never owned one but all the open mics and 'jam' sessions I've been to that have had one, it's always a cheaply-built one like the Fender CB100 or Ibanez models. The sound board is (obviously!) not big enough to project properly like an upright, is made from cheap laminate wood so sounds bad acoustically and you inevitably end up plugging it in, at which the acoustic properties (if any) of the instrument goes straight out the window and you then rely on the cheap, crappy preamp which just sounds like a bad electric bass with the added hassle of feedback... I just can't see where they can be useful these days. I've played a Michael Kelly once which was beautiful and actually built from decent materials and well-constructed but again, needed plugging in. The only bass I've played that I would consider would be one of the fretless Rob Allen Deep basses. Sonically it was the only bass that offered something different in an acoustic setting that would've been worthwhile.
I forgot about the bleedin' feedback issues! I've even got a Schaller 411 mag pickup on my upright bass

Old Czech Double Bass advice
stingrayPete1977 replied to guntherbuffalo's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Looks decent to me, probably a good rub with some 1200 grit sandpaper up and down the neck to take the shine off it would make it play it bit easier, looks quite glossy. -
I rarely use mine outside of the house, it's not loud enough so you still need an amp, I bought a sunburst and rosewood Jazz bass which looks right in almost any context so I'd use than and a 1x10 cab for an 'acoustic style' gig. There's only one kind of real acoustic bass really imo

How many BassChatters have never ever gigged?
stingrayPete1977 replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
If I wasn't gigging I'd be doing more OM type gigs and more old car tinkering, I really struggle to play at home without a date in the diary, that said it can all get a bit much, my current band are trying to get into a sort of once evey 4 weeks situation which of course isn't happening, three weeks on the trot then nothing for ages! I'd be reducing my gear collection if I wasn't gigging much to spend the money on old car parts/tools. If/when my current bands implode I might start looking more at upright gigs but my stamina would need some work and I'm not sure what sort of gig I'd be after really, I've not been without some kind of band since around 1993 and never been to an audition as such as the gigs have just come my way over the years. A poll would be good imo, I don't think anyone needs to get upset at the OP. -
Yes, if only there was a way to write it down so it could be communicated to others. Youre just going to have to imagine it, as there's no other medium via which it can be conveyed.
I'm getting hints of Megadeth with a Janis Joplin undertone? -
Me? I think most Fenders looks bulky and head heavy. No accounting for taste, eh?
Most Gibson basses are actually head heavy!
There's a bit more going into it than that.
If only there was a recognised international set of terms or a way writing it down to describe it to us all, that would be great -

Just done a wedding, "oh yes did you learn the first dance?" , nope, here's the chord chart then, it was an easy song tbh but it's not going to work with the 'working it out by ear method' in that situation, we didn't even sound check never mind have time to run through the song. -

Technical speaker question (for tonight's gig)
stingrayPete1977 replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
I've got the same rig amongst others, I've got a speakon to speakon coupler for exactly this reason as the cable is short isn't it? I think Maplins stock them if you are passing one before they close! Bit far from France I suppose! Lol Good luck, fingers crossed. -

Reading and theory always get confused by those who generally get involved with neither, I was one of those people, I don't sight read but I can use my limited reading to play a theory excersize from a book at my own pace, the method of using an agreed set of dots and lines is a lot quicker than "up a bit, down a bit, no hold that one a bit longer, down a bit but not as far as normal then quickly back up a bit and stop, play the next notes but I'm not telling you what they are or for how long" -
That's not an answer. You can always hear the PA, even from behind it. When you're using IEM's you're shut off from all of the FOH so how do you maintain a balance out front through out the gig? I'm asking the question because maybe the guys using IEM's have solved what to me seems like a show stopper, unless you have a sound man. I've not been in many bands that were able to maintain a balance using backline, but you can hear when the band and volume is going out of balance, but how do you address this with no backline and when you're cut off from the PA using IEM's.
You need to get into a different mind set with it, the sound check can be done by whoever in the band does it with them out front until the mix is perfect, then that's it, no fiddling! If you have a guitarist with a Marshall stack that turns up mid gig and pushes the whole volume up by the second set they need educating regardless of iem or not. If you WANT the second set a bit louder overall there's a volume slider for that. If said guitarist wants to deafen himself that's fine he has an individual volume control to his in ears,as long as he leaves his amp volume alone the front of house will be balanced. If you are running an ampless band all wireless you are almost in a situation of purely adjusting the volume from gig to gig and remove the need for a sound check, there's a reason pro function bands that need a good mix without a two hour sound check and without a live engineer are going in ears. Nearly forgot, you are not shut off from it at all, you could if you wish have THE ACTUAL foh mix in your in ears, that's the exact opposite of being shut off from the foh! You can also run open ambient mics because you don't have any monitors on stage creating the dreaded feedback, digital mixer, mic out towards the rear of the room and you could even set that up as a saved mix just to the sound persons ears and listen in mid song!

Needs the extra string though for me or I'll never play it, I'm guessing that's not going to be an option?

Bag recommendations for 3/4 double bass
stingrayPete1977 replied to chickencole's topic in EUB and Double Bass
One thing to consider is the size and shape of the bass, I bought a new Tom&Will bag from Thomann as it was one of only a few that would fit my bass when you look at all the dimensions. No matter how cheap the bag is if it doesn't fit it's a waste of cash!
