1. Reading and theory always get confused by those who generally get involved with neither, I was one of those people, I don't sight read but I can use my limited reading to play a theory excersize from a book at my own pace, the method of using an agreed set of dots and lines is a lot quicker than "up a bit, down a bit, no hold that one a bit longer, down a bit but not as far as normal then quickly back up a bit and stop, play the next notes but I'm not telling you what they are or for how long"
2.
That's not an answer. You can always hear the PA, even from behind it. When you're using IEM's you're shut off from all of the FOH so how do you maintain a balance out front through out the gig? I'm asking the question because maybe the guys using IEM's have solved what to me seems like a show stopper, unless you have a sound man. I've not been in many bands that were able to maintain a balance using backline, but you can hear when the band and volume is going out of balance, but how do you address this with no backline and when you're cut off from the PA using IEM's.
You need to get into a different mind set with it, the sound check can be done by whoever in the band does it with them out front until the mix is perfect, then that's it, no fiddling! If you have a guitarist with a Marshall stack that turns up mid gig and pushes the whole volume up by the second set they need educating regardless of iem or not. If you WANT the second set a bit louder overall there's a volume slider for that. If said guitarist wants to deafen himself that's fine he has an individual volume control to his in ears,as long as he leaves his amp volume alone the front of house will be balanced. If you are running an ampless band all wireless you are almost in a situation of purely adjusting the volume from gig to gig and remove the need for a sound check, there's a reason pro function bands that need a good mix without a two hour sound check and without a live engineer are going in ears. Nearly forgot, you are not shut off from it at all, you could if you wish have THE ACTUAL foh mix in your in ears, that's the exact opposite of being shut off from the foh! You can also run open ambient mics because you don't have any monitors on stage creating the dreaded feedback, digital mixer, mic out towards the rear of the room and you could even set that up as a saved mix just to the sound persons ears and listen in mid song!
3. Needs the extra string though for me or I'll never play it, I'm guessing that's not going to be an option?
4.
Yes please! Sonic blue & tort 5er, phwoar!
Make that two
5. One thing to consider is the size and shape of the bass, I bought a new Tom&Will bag from Thomann as it was one of only a few that would fit my bass when you look at all the dimensions. No matter how cheap the bag is if it doesn't fit it's a waste of cash!
6. Thanks guys I'll have a play around with those suggestions.
7. Thumb just touching 'the silver' of the frog, index finger on the leather bit, fore finger opposite the thumb loosely placed over the frog. Any corrections, tips, pictures more than welcome. I've got my Rufus Reid book back out along with the metronome and a mirror
8. My own hand over view I haven't got small hands so Jake must have really long fingers, I suppose that's why there can't be a strict rule as such.
9. Following on from the bass bash ive found some pictures, this is Jake Newman's hand holding my Yita bow on my Gedo bass. 10.
... yet you play Stingrays, whose scratchplates came straight off a banjo I once specc'd up a bass that looked a lot like this from Cataldo and it came to £1600. Nice one Jow.
Only my classic5 has the banjo one actually, the others are 5 stringers with the even uglier ones, lol. I think they look good overall, who's going first then?
11. I enjoyed that, I even casted (?) it onto the big tele.
12. I will have a go though, see if I can use the tips given to me
13. Realistically it's best if I just don't think about it, it's never gonna happen!
14. I'm seeing The Stray Birds at the Stafford gate house soon and red hot chili peppers in Manchester in December.
15. I struggle to look at basses with a pick guard that looks like it's off something else, I get that that is the point. Seafoam with a musicman pickup and a black 3 ply guard made to follow the body and pickups, pop on a fifth string and that might be pretty cool!
16. Having so far no bass failures and a few amp ones I'd rather lend a spare bass out than the only bass amp in the venue to be honest.
17. If I could play like Geoff can with the one I got for free then I'd have a bid, I suspect I'd sound much the same with it, awful.
18. Who's Andy Partridge?
19. I'd like to go to a bass bash with the people that don't allow other people to try each others gear,it would be like a weird cult! At the double bass bash I think Owen ended up with about 12 cabs and five amps gathered from around the room, much fun was had! I treat everything on it's own merits regarding sharing stuff, rarely when out on motorbikes do we end up on our own bikes all day, it's fun to see what gives you gas and what extinguishes gas!
20. I've just tried mine the other way around, it's really hard because my jumper keeps muting all the strings!
21. You can see the enjoyment on my face as I hold onto the coffee mug to stop it rattling off the table!
22. Those tricky audio cabs are spot on, I really like them.
23. Great quality pics, I'm still amazed at how good the Yamaha sounded with a bow, I wouldn't be able to tell once mixed in with other instruments playing, fantastic.
24.
Perhaps music shops should take a lesson from the masters of retailing, Supermarkets. Just walk in, spend as long as you like looking and picking stuff up. Pay at the check-out when ready? That applies to food, clothes, TV's etc etc.
That's how musical exchanges in Birmingham was in 1990, and guess what, all those annoying kids grew up, got jobs and spent loads of cash in there just a few years later,my originals band must have spent nearly 10k in there over a few years.
25. City folk think anywhere that the tube doesn't go to is remote, how many threads do we see where buyers are willing to spend £2500 on a bass or amp but won't spend £40 on fuel to drive to bass direct or similar to try it and collect it yet happy to take a chance on internet reviews.
