1. And five strings!
2. Warwick Jazzman, went to buy one and the preamp was broken straight out of the box! Bought a Stingray instead because the money was burning a hole in my pocket.
3.
£1850 and the previously considered alternative was a £729 Martin DRS. I suspect the shop probably made more out of the deal. Anyway, I wasn't actually looking for thanks; experience has taught me to expect very little from guitar shops
But the shop doesn't just buy them all in for £500 each and earn more off more expensive sales, it's quite possible sometimes that the cheaper version has more in it for the shop, less so for the same brand granted but a known brand that sells like Squier can force a better deal for themselves than the shop, lots of £50 cuts from lots of Squier basses is better than a £100 cut from a bass that doesn't sell. The chinese P bass deal with an amp and strap could be bought in for say £100 and sold for £199 many times over coming up to christmas, the no doubt much nicer and better value for money Squier deal selling for lets say £249 might be costing the shop £175, that expert advice has got the buyer a better bass and a useable amp but you've cost the shop £25! Stack 'em high sell 'em cheap!
4. Bass Direct in the uk might be worth an email, Mark Stikley is the boss there and must have a contact at BSX as a dealer for their (lovely!) basses.
5.
And there's the reason why the shop boy should have zipped it. You were quite right. It's happened to me before now. Last time, this obviously well-heeled guy was buying an acoustic for his son and I talked him up to a Martin D18. The assistant didn't even thank me, the shonky bastard.
As with the Squier story above though this is looking at it as both an outsider and an enthusiast, the cheap package deal the assistant was trying to sell to the lady probably had twice as much profit available for the store than the Fender (squier) one, possibly more, same goes for the Martin D18, its possible that a ticketed £250 acoustic has more margin for the store than a £1250 acoustic.
6. 1988- music in the charts was awful, stock, aitken and waterman. I was into radio controlled cars and push bikes mainly, I'd been playing acoustic guitar for two years, started jamming with an Avon SG bass around January 1990 after a mate bought a whole load of kit for Christmas just before. Shake your money maker by The Black Crows was our jam for a while iirc.
7. That's a lot of kit now!
8. I had a 2002 teal Stingray 4 brand new and an Ashdown EVO 1x10 combo and 1x15 matching extension cab about a year later, everything after that has been frivolous really, and there's been a lot, lol. The item least likely to ever be used as designed would be my carbon fibre double bass bow, having heard JakeNewmanbass use it on my own upright I know what it can do, it won't be repeating that performance at by hand!
9. Sterling is the brand, like Squier is to Fender, bit daft as it's also a model made by Ernie Ball Musicman. As for fitment I'd check with Status direct.
10. From the horse's mouth, can't beat that can you? Nice to see you here Dave, welcome
11. Got to be 5SSS,I really want one!
12. How can it be contemporary when it looks 80's? Looks like one of those self build kits for around £80 to me.
13. Where's your full stop lojo?
14. Well I've got a mini and a Morris minor, I fancied something a bit modern!
15. The deluxe versions have fancy laminate tops and a wider choice of finishes everything else is the same.
16. It doesn't, I can't wire an amp head into it therefore it isn't a cab. I use a backline anyway but almost always with a di to the foh,the point was I'd only ever do a gig with that band knowing what I needed before hand, if in the future I have iem or just use a wedge it will be me taking it and setting it up, if it was a bigger gig I'd be hiring in a bigger PA that would be spec'd to suit likewise. If you are in a band where you don't know what will be there like your typical 4 bands on the bill job or a charity all dayer then a cab is required imo even if it's a 300 watt 2x10 combo.
17. Ah, a very constructive reply.
18. Yep Stagg user here too, bargainous piece of kit that takes up less room than the big'un.
19.
Turn up to a gig without a cab. No monitors. Other band won't lend you theirs. You don't have IEM. Then what? You need a cab.
This is why it depends on your specific situation, my main band doesn't do multi band gigs and the PA is always ours so that's never going to happen.
20. I'm looking at Austin Metros and Maestros, Morris Itals and Marinas etc on eBay, some things just can't be explained!
21.
I didn't say owning one is snobbish. They are very overpriced though.
Something is only "overpriced" if they don't sell at the set price which any shop will tell you isn't true, someone mentioned in the G&L thread that even though they were great basses the customers still left with a Fender in their shop, what they are is 'more than you are prepared to pay for one', not overpriced.
22. We've had a few cheques too, horrible things
23. They are on par with the Transit van that got you there, the Pearl drumkit that has done a million gigs without fault, the sm58 mics that have been dropped and smell of cheese but work just fine, trusty old tools.
