I've got my '85 MIJ Fender '75 RI Jazz with Howard at the moment for a refinish. I'll be posting pics when it's done but based on the work shown here I'm very excited!
Hi. I'd like to try some flats on at least one of my basses without spending a lot of cash as it's more of an experiment atm. Any suggestions for inexpensive flatwounds. Or 'pressure wound' or halfwound / groundwound etc ground wound etc..?
Get Fender 9050 flats. They're pretty cheap (under £20!) and they're actually not bad. Obviously there are better sets but save those for IF you decide you like them

I'm having similar issues. I've got a few nice vinyls I want to move on and the dilemma is; 1) ship and risk them all snapping in half or 2) collection only and miss out on the larger market places.

An open letter to Custom builders. (Update on Page 11)
skej21 replied to Shockwave's topic in General Discussion
It has to be said, I've had dealings with a couple of the custom builders on here. After having a jazz bass body from one of them, the communication and customer service was poor to say the least and the builder has since gone on to needlessly rant on here (publically) in a very negative way about Fenders and the clientele who buy/own them (which would include me), so I would not use those services again. If builders are hit-or-miss with service and as passive-aggressive as the Basschat rants would suggest, they have no-one to blame but themselves if it affects business. You can have all the luthier skill in the world but it's wasted if your attitude puts customers off your services. -
Only just found this but it's stunning. I've just dropped my bass off with Howard last week for a refinish and hopefully it'll be as nice as this!

Epiphone Allen Woody! Short scale, looks really cool and the quality of the build is really great. They retail at £279ish, so not a fortune either. I'm not sure it's as easy as just taking with because it's small though.

My bass that is away getting a refin... And a Nate Mendel precision!

If it pops up second hand, an Epiphone Custom Shop Allen Woody Rumblekat. Stunning bass!
I have never expressed this view upon seeing any bass player play because I fully believe that with the right amount of dedication, persistence and hard work, anyone can play anything that anyone else can play. I hear and read the phrase a lot though. If this is a realistic acknowledgement of lack of time, pressures of everyday life, etc. I understand. However, if it's due to a perceived lack of talent, or the idea that it would be impossible for one to reach a particular standard, I say that's rubbish.
I can understand it. Whilst you're right that with enough practice you can copy someone else's playing, it's the creativity that one may never match. It's the originality, the innovation, the muse that separates imitation Jaco (or any other bass great) lines from the brain of the player that can hear those lines before they're played. Some players will never nail that, even with 1 million hours practice!

Markbass LMIII as it was the nicest lightweight at the time (although thinking about a TH500 now!). Usually use either an Aguilar GS112 or the DB112NT depending on what I'm playing or how big the needfortweed is! Very rarely use the full rig but it sounds killer when I do and pushes a LOT of air. I can carry my entire rig in one trip, even with both cabs so its here to stay!
This. This is the issue I have with fender these days. If they call a Jazz RI a '66 (A year specifically known for having lollipos, and dots and binding), then it has to be that, otherwise, why dont they call it a '68, that way they have nothing to worry about, they can get away with regular 70's style tuners that the japs use anyway, and block necks. Like the early Custom Shop J's being called a 1960 on the certs, and having 3 knobs...i could go on... most annoying!!
Apparently it had all the periodic specific '66 features until this guy got involved! http://youtu.be/cmQvxfo75K0
Only just spotted this thread, and fairly new to the forum, so apologies for this post being a bit "late" But I've owned several basses, incl Fender, Rickenbacker, Ibanez, and briefly a Yamaha I've played many more, and have pals with Warwicks etc but my Ibanez Soundgear SR500 has THE slimest, fastest neck of the lot it's much slimmer than a Jazz, by a long way The only bass which was similar was another soundgear bass the SR520, I think... EDIT: the slim nature of the neck is not just at the top - it's slim along the whole length of the neck too
Having owned an SR500 and still owning the Geddy, the Geddy is easily the thinnest neck I've ever played. Almost impossibly thin...
I've wanted one of these for ages but can't find one for sale, it's not ltd ed afaik.
You're right, its not under the '2013 limited edition' drop down menu on the site, so it must be standard production. Regardless, it looks amazing and I'm glad that I already agreed on a different colour for my '75 or I might have copying this and annoying poor Howard with my indecisiveness lol!

How do you stop your lightweight amp from wandering off?
My MB800 goes wandering at gigs due to its light weight and the vibrations from the Schroeder. How do other D class users get round this problem?
Rack mount that mother funker!! -
Who will Fender destroy next, taking bets.....,,,,
'Destroy'... I think you mean 'Relic'

Tuner, compressor and a pre-amp/DI for me. I always use the tuner and compressor pedals as they keep things clean and tidy in a live mix and keep the pre-amp/DI for the gigs where I want control over the desk EQ or if I need a little extra headroom.

Hi Pat, Welcome from another York resident! Nick, are you a regular at the Phoenix? I've heard mixed reviews but it's always interested me. Might pop along if it gets the basschat seal of approval
Hello Pat. If you want to find jazz players, come down to the Phoenix Inn on a Wednesday night for the jam session. Hope to see you there, Nick
A Lake Placid Blue, matching headstock jazz bass with rosewood 'board, pearloid block inlays and cream 'board binding... Lightly relic'd.
I'm strangely tempted towards a Classic Series Mustang. Do they sound like a P bass, and can you get short scale decent flats for them?
I know this is slightly off topic but Fender are releasing an American Special Mustang guitar, the first mustang to be made in the US for 5/6 years. If the recent introduction of the starcaster/corondo/cabronita etc guitar AND bass ranges are anything to go by, there's a chance that they may follow suit and release an American Special or FSR mustang bass. You never know!
Remember to learn the intervals backwards as well (fifth to root not just root to fifth).
Good idea but try not to confuse the interval reference (ascending/descending interval) with the key reference of the note (ie root to fifth, fifth to root) as they often end up with multiple numbers (ie a descending perfect fourth is fifth to root within a key... see lol). It becomes confusing as descending intervals (fifth to root, major seven to root etc) are actually inversions of the ascending interval. For example, C to G is a perfect fifth as an ascending interval but G to C is a perfect fourth as a descending interval. So referring to the latter as (fifth to root) is confusing as the interval is a descending perfect fourth and could cause issues when having to recognise the correct interval in theory/aural examinations or when transposing music etc.

LMIII and all cables in a laptop size bag. Pedals in front of gig bag. Bass in gig bag. Cab in each hand. One trip and I have a superb sounding, powerful rig. Just one cab in hand if its a smaller gig. Nobody ever believes it until they hear it... No goin back to 'Mesa Yabackup' or other heavy valve stuff for me!

Just bought an Aguilar DB112NT from Kev. Great price, in excellent condition and packaging for shipping was fantastic. Don't think twice about dealing with Kev, a true credit to the BC community.

Serious question. How have Doc pro plugs got such a good rep? They sound awful and are intended for swimming but play on this rep they have with musicians. I just don't get it. Can anyone explain why they're supposed to be so good?

Are high end basses for investors or musicians?
skej21 replied to Pinball's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like he's a nice, honest guy with his own opinions about why MIA basses are made.
Sounds like a poor salesman that uses his ill informed opinion rather than well-researched product knowledge and facts in discussions with his customers. If he did have product knowledge, he would have seen an opportunity to inform the customer of the differences of the basses and then left the customer to make their own decision based on the facts. That's just my opinion though
