I really want a Precision with a jazz neck... swap shop system, anyone?
I still don't understand why that would bother anyone. Who cares what other people buy? Do these 'advisors' stand in shops all day (when they not trawling auction sites that is) and give advice to prospective customers there?
The sad thing is, they do! I've seen it numerous times in my local shop, where there's someone trying out an instrument and some nosey git interrupts to tell them 'you can get that £4 cheaper on the 'net you know!*. The best one was a few days ago when I was trying a Nate Mendel Precision in my local shop. I was sat facing the amp with my back to the shop floor and this gentleman tapped me on the shoulder to tell me that it was 'an okay looking bass but a Squier (CV 60s Precision) would be just as good because it has the same 'humbucker' pickup, is the same colour, isn't 'shop damaged' and is better than half the price!'... You get people like this everywhere and I just ignore them. Let them waste their own time being ridiculous with someone else lol.

So, I'm listing a few bits and bobs i've ended up with over the years thanks to various projects etc. It's time they went to a good home. All items include free P&P and the neck will be sent via 24 hour courier, insured. First up, a Bass neck with tuners. The 'G' tuner has taken a slight knock but works absolutely fine. It's a 34" scale, rosewood fingerboard with a 'C' shape profile. Further blurb below if needed - SOLD PENDING Secondly, a set of new Fender official replacement Jazz bass knobs WITHDRAWN Thirdly, a set of new Fender official replacement Tele/Precision bass knobs - SOLD PENDING Pictures below. Payment via paypal gift or bank transfer
See if this works http://instagram.com/p/g8KbGMuQas/ Just borrowed a American standard one before ordering a 62 reissue one.
That is VERY smart! I'll be going for that.
Tried mine with a shell pickguard today... Well...that's happening.
I was thinking of doing the same thing when I get mine. Pics would be great if you've got any as I'd like to see what it looks like!

Nice bass mate! I've had two instruments from fareastguitars and John is a really great guy and has some great examples of Japanese Fender. I bet its gorgeous!
That looks fabulous! Well done all involved. Fender Japan do a 75RI like this, but they call the colour Old Lake Placid Blue - it's a shade or two darker than what you have, and I have serious GAS for one - with a pearloid scratchplate to match the block inlays. There were good and (still) valid reason for moving on my 75RI, but I do miss that bass.
Thanks all... In response to the colour thing, it's actually darker than the full bass shot (the light makes the colour look more vivid!). It's closer to the blue in the body shot. I'll slam a link to the Facebook album with the bigger, hi-res photos later today Edit: link to pics on facebook now added!

You can see mine here! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/221870-fender-75-ri-refinish/
I'm not allowed to do that here - or I would. sorry. Edit: I've asked the other mods to look at it.
Cheers! Posting from my phone so it's posted twice. Oops!

So, this is kind of like a NBD for me! I asked our very own Bassdoc (Howard!) to refinish my '75 RI in Lake Placid Blue nitrocellulose with a matching headstock. It was originally the natural ash body which I initially liked but after some GAS induced googling, I spotted a few LPB jazzes with rosewood block/bound necks and fell in love! It's my favourite bass to play by far and I felt the classic '75 RI look was too boring alongside my two black basses lol. So off it went for the refin and what a stunning job it is! Link to all the pics! He might be a master of the scratchplate but he's got plenty of other tricks up his sleevies!
This is not a serious post, but the tool described does exist. As I seem to be flicking over to ebay too frequently, I wrote a quick hack program that reads the newly listed basses and speaks out the title. It was done quickly, but I find it quite useful and amusing. My computer has just read out '1976 RICKENBACKER 4001 - OLYMPIC WHITE - INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL CASE'. I know it's been listed, but it's not the kind of thing I was looking for. However, when a recently listed Bass Collection 320 fretless was listed, I immediately went and had a look. It's already saving me ebay checking time, which had turned into a bad habit for me. Next I wish to have multiple searched being checked at once, and also include gumtree.
My missus uses an app called 'shopstyle' which alerts her to any sale items from a number of clothing shops as soon as they are discounted. Maybe you could create a similar style app that finds bass related items on all auctioning/second hand sites in one place? I'd buy it!
The Markbass combos weigh in @ the same as a MB head & cab of the same. If I was in the market just now, I'd be snapping up one of the current GB deals & probably a Barefaced cab.
I think the point is that 38lbs in one trip is worse for your back than two trips taking a 6lb head then a 32lb cab. To the OP, personally, I love my markbass head and my aguilar cabs and they are a breeze to load/unload, even if the cabs are at the heavier end of the Aguilar cab weight chart!

I suppose people have preconceptions of what gear you should be turning up to a gig with, in the same way they expect certain types of repertoire, clothing, atmosphere etc! I imagine most of us have gear that we've taken to gig wondering 'is it a bit weird to take *insert bass* to a gig like that?'... I certainly did when I turned up to a WMC with a coffee table 6er as i had come straight from an afternoon rehearsal of a theatre show I was doing and it was my reading bass at the time lol!
Because, in my professional sphere, I have repeatedly seen research carried out in order to generate news. Simple as that really.
And research that exploits differing environmental factors to manipulate the outcome... '9/10 bass players voted *insert bassist* as the greatest bassist of all time' is a good (hypothetical) example. What you're actually saying is that in a survey of instrumentalists restricted only to bass players, most of whom will have listened to/searched for bass lines in music specifically and are likely to remember who played those lines, had a similar view on who is the greatest within a specific area of a topic. If the same research was conducted with 100 people walking out of the supermarket, 9/10 people would probably not have even heard of *insert bassist*!
Okay - have some Chromes on my fretless atm. I like the feel, I like the sound (after a couple weeks) but I definitely do not like the tension. Anything out there like Chromes but with lower tension? Ta!
Why not try the 0.40 - 0.95 set of Chromes (D'Addario ECB80)? The string tension on the ECB80 is significantly less than the standard gauge sets of Chromes!
They might have a problem, not least because the, rather wonderful, T-Bone Wolk is dead For those of you who have never heard of him (and have probably already decided they wouldn't like him anyway) he's another of those strange professional musician people with a string of hits to his name and he's credited on over 600 albums
I was being sarcastic... I totally agree with you
http://youtu.be/mQZmCJUSC6g
I bet that would sound exactly the same on those instruments if they played it today
You know what, I pretty much believe this. A world class player will always sound good, because it's about their talent. I don't think for a second that they can't tell the difference in quality between the student model and the Strad. Equally, if they were forced to use the student model for some reason, most of us listening wouldn't know the difference. When I hear Bobby Vega doing his funky pick style. It's Bobby I'm hearing, not whatever bass he's playing. I'm sure we'll disagree on this, but that's ok, I'm cool with that
I kinda agree with that sentiment. However, I do believe there's an equilibrium with any amount of talent. No matter how talented someone is, there's a point where the tools hold back that talent. You put Sebastian Vettel in a micra, he'll still drive like Vettel but he's not anywhere near the level of concentration, skill and talent it takes to drive an F1 at full speed. Same with basses. I play a HUGE variety of guitars, pianos, drums and basses every single day through work and I am 100% sure that whilst I can keep my playing 'identity' on anything, playing a £70 bass guitar has drawbacks (height of action, poor pickups, poor tuning because of cheap machine heads, no shielding etc etc) that undoubtedly decreases the quality of the sound that my fingers can produce.
Maybe the answer's very simple. Anything that has at least a half reasonable name when it's new will always increasingly increase in pseudo mythical status as it gets older. There will always be some people who's prefer 'an old one' than a brand new one. My limited budget very recently would have bought me a new Yamaha RBX170 or the 1982 Squier JV Precision that I bought. Do they sound very similar ? Yep. Do they play very similar ? Yep. Old stuff will always be worth something. Its actually efficacy at doing the job is neither here nor there. You buy an old one because you want to, not because it's a better tool for the job.
I couldn't disagree with you more. What if the best tool for the job is a pre-fender SWR amp? a '70s Kay guitar? a Stradavarius violin? I'm pretty sure your argument would convince all professional concert violinists that they should ditch their Stradavarius for a Stentor Student II. I mean, they're just buying old for the sake of it anyway and the efficacy of the Strad at doing the job is neither here not there...

Ritter, Aguilar, Bergantino - Apparently a great sounding combination!

Barrie, would you agree that for the difference in price and the fact that it's Class D (so no valve maintenance hassle), the TH500 gives a close enough tone and offers reliability, portability and volumes that would be great for gigging musicians? I've always viewed most +500w heads as a 'touring' head, intended to be used for much larger venues and feel that while it would be nice (possibly a luxury) to regularly gig a DB head, the impact that regular use would have on the valves (and my back!) does not warrant it being viewed as the 'must-have' amp, despite its lack of competition on the tone front. I also find that in most bigger venues, I end up using the PA for the FOH volume and my TH preamp offers a lovely tone via the DI, meaning most of the time, my rig is for monitoring purposes for me in these situations and 500w head is loud enough. In smaller venues, 500w also seems to be loud enough and offers a nice source of sound. I've been thinking about getting a new head and just wondering whether you think its worth going with the 'work horse' TH500 or just go full throttle and get a DB751? -
Musicians Union, BASCA, PCAM, etc - worthwhile?

As a full member of the MU I think it's completely worth the money. The legal cover, pre-written performance contracts (legally sound and written by the MU lawyers), instrument insurance and the security of pre-agreed working rates (for tuition, performances and recordings) help to protect my income and my gear. Plus, £183 looks like a lot of cash on paper but it's not much across an entire year... Also, a couple of years back my band had two wedding gigs unfairly cancelled a few hours before we were due to set up (both had 'overspent' and thought cancelling the band would save them some cash!) and thanks to the MU contracts we had signed with the clients, they ended up paying us in full with little hassle and the comfort of knowing we had quality legal cover if needed. Those two gigs covered the cost of the annual MU fee alone, so totally worth it IMO!
