Who knows... The one thing that is certain is that Fender always put their prices up once a year. This has meant that the Geddy Lee Sig Jazz I purchased new for £600 with a hiscox case is now close to £1000 off the shelf. This doesn't always reflect the resale value though, so it's a tough one but the price increases mean that they are more likely to hold a bigger share of their purchase value.
A "go-to" bass. A bass with an alternative number of strings. A fretless bass. An easy-to-transport bass. A bass that has sentimental value. CB
+1 except Id have my YOB bass and an upright instead of 'easy to transport' and 'fretless'. Mine so far are; '62 RI Jazz - My 'go to' bass SR1605 - Alternate number of strings and easy to transport bass '75 RI Jazz - My Year of Birth bass Geddy Lee Jazz - My 'sentimental' bass Just need a nice upright and that'd be my 5 sorted
I have the Aguilar. Its pretty good. It tracks down to B fairly comfortably but I have found it gets spotty around A. Aguilar pedals are poorly designed as the high edges make it difficult to use them with angled jack sockets. Still it is a good pedal otherwise.
I too have an Octamizer and much prefer it to the OC2/3 and the MXR bass octave deluxe pedals. In Aguilar's defence, the new lipless pedal design has removed the 'high edges' to eliminate the issues with using angled jacks, so don't be put off by that! Great analogue sound and much less fiddley than the MXR IMO.
I did point out the specific problem with the ASAT. And should I really have to tell a guitar shop: 'You need to make sure your stock is in good order before putting it out'?
No but it may have been fine when they put it out and has gradually become in that state through constant demo use. Even without these factors, the guitar isnt going to stay perfectly set-up hanging on a wall so its expected that it will need to be maintained regularly and contrary to what you may think, they probably don't get time to play every guitar/bass in the shop all day to find out these issues themselves, likely relying on constructive feedback about the state of the instruments from customers so that they can act on and become aware of issues developing with their stock. Simply stating 'its a dog' and storming out isn't helpful. However, it would raise concerns if there were issues with multiple instruments that you tried. The odd one is understandable.

My drill for reading is simple but gets rid of the annoyances you seem have with reading. First, I look at the key sig and then quickly scan through to see what the most commonly occurring notes are. 9/10, they narrow down the ambiguity of the key sig (for example, if you have 1 sharp but there are a lot of 'E's in the piece, it's likely to be E minor, not G major). I then look for the highest note and the lowest note in the piece. This then tells me which positions I will need to be prepared to use and how far up/down the neck I NEED to go. Finally, I look for any tricky looking phrases, again so I know that they're coming and if I don't get a chance to give it a quick 'ghost run' then at least I take away the rush of adrenaline and panic that can occur when a tricky part comes out if nowhere lol.

equal temperament....explaination in simple terms
skej21 replied to iconic's topic in Theory and Technique
Please no large words.....i think its an applied system to an instrument inherently out of tune intonation wise to what are considered perfect intervals.....guessing though to be honest.
I'd try an explain but this is so much easier to understand. WARNING! Watching this video WILL make everything you listen to immediately afterwards sound dreadfully out of tune lol. http://youtu.be/BhZpvGSPx6w -
If you hadn't excluded Ibanez I would have thoroughly recommended a second hand SR505 or 605, which you'd just about get within your price range..
Or an SR305 brand new for £299 Plus the 'root beer' finish is pretty darn cool!
I'm beginning to feel that I should buy British stuff. I have an Ashdown head and a Barefaced cab - both of which I am really pleased with. What are my options for actual bass guitars? I can think of:

Status
Shuker
GB ?
I guess there must be more?
Missing a really obvious one here - Overwater!
As I stated somewhere before, I definitely have a MiM Fender 60s Jazz bass non road worn in nitro, sunburst, came with a hardshell tweed case, new about 4 or 5 weeks ago. Lovely instrument, sounds and feels better than my 2008 US standard J. Quite a rare beast at the moment, though, I just struck lucky.
This is correct. We've got the '60s Classic series jazz bass (with the nitro finish) hanging on the wall in our shop They do the black '50s classic series precision bass in nitro now too.

Watch Wooten's Groove Workshop DVD, specifically the bit about beat placement. When he places the note to play a semi quaver in front of the beat, you get that feel, so start there and play around with it. Try placing your notes on the dotted semi quaver after the beat, that's a good one and so on. Just change it up until you find a placement that sounds right to you as your 'behind (or in front!) of the beat and then use it as a reference for future grooves!

New Vintage Modified Squier basses! Fretless, PJ and 5-string Precisions
skej21 replied to dannybuoy's topic in Bass Guitars
Yeah I posted some links to some models in the other thread. So many new models its hard to post them all. Some great stuff though. Exciting times for beginner bass players and guitarists with some many options to pick from. -
Glad you've fixed the problem! But pretty worrying that 3 out of 3 arrived with issues, especially on a premium series. Personally, I wouldn't have been able to fix the problem on the third (totally useless!) so that would have been a write off for me as well. As I said before, I hope this doesn't signal a decline in the build quality and QC at Ibanez.
I find it unlikely. I genuinely believe that Andrea is simply unlucky. We have a VERY quick turnaround of Ibanez basses in our store. We regularly (ie weekly) have SR300, SR500, SR600 or SR1200 being bought in store and replaced with new stock and I honestly cant think of one that has turned up in an unsatisfactory condition. I reserve full judgement until my SR1605 has arrived as we've never had one in before but I'd hate the misfortune of one person's situation to reflect badly on such a great range of basses!
SR1605 arrived today Will return it tomorrow, it's too neck diving for me (just checked and poplar is nearly half the weight of ovangkol) and probably this is an explanation why a 1606 doesn't exist: a six strings will be too neck diving to be acceptable. And honestly the quality of the details is just acceptable I will order a 1205 instead.
Poplar is half the weight but that's why the body is made of mahogany, just like the sr1205. They just have differing top woods and I can't see the weight being much different to be honest. Also, you bought something blind from Thomann and wonder why it's in poor condition? Because they don't even open the box to see what's in it!! Buying from a retailer is always better if you want to see it first and know its right IMO! Plus, most retailers can offer fixes under warrantee (for example, fixing the wiring that likely came loose during shipping or Thomann's vast warehouse) rather than you shipping stuff back and forth in exchange for refunds and purchases. You also seem to have very bad luck. Hope you get it sorted.
This is great, I've flicked through all 12 to get an idea of the types of things he was doing. Nice to see that he's fixing bedroom studios rather than dedicated rooms. So now hmm, I'm thinking about my setup and how I can improve it. I'll start a thread about it I think. My main problem is that I probably can't get into the centre of the room so I'll have to see what I can do to work around this.
Yeah! He's got some great tips and its nice to see him doing it in a more everyday environment and not just setting up studios that would be beyond/irrelevant to most home recording setups.

'Vintageinvestments'... What are you investing in this? Hours and hours of regret?

Having stumbled across this series on YouTube, I thought I should share as there are some awesome insights and tips (and its actually a good watch at times!). I imagine some basschatters who are setting up home studios or wish to improve there studio might find it helpful! There are a number of episodes and his tips for using mirrors to work out where the acoustic materials should be positioned are great! Enjoy - http://youtu.be/02qpJt0hsL0
