Too high SPL, is the band or the venue responsible?
skej21 replied to Dandelion's topic in General Discussion
FYI... The majority of people expose themselves to high SPL almost daily by having their personal music playing far too loud into headphones. They've probably made themselves deaf before they even step foot into the pub you're playing in! -
Does the James johnston Squier jazz bass have the same routing issue sans scratch plate ? If not, you could save a lot of time and money by just buying one of them!
Seems even a fender UK rep is interested in this, he is sourcing what exactly it is. I'm not getting my hopes up though, I am merely happy that it works, its in great condition and I love how it sounds when I play it.
Chuffed for you. It looks like it could be something quite unique!!
Well I could be wrong, I'm looking into what exactly it is anyway
I would! I have a Japanese 62 RI and it doesn't have 22 frets. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a 22 fret 60's jazz bass, RI or original. You could have a rarity right there!
The volume difference between 300 watts and 500 watts through a 210 cab will be small. The volume difference between 1 210 cab and 2 210 cabs will be large. The bonus is that the tone will be greatly improved by using more speakers Anything like a 410 or larger you might as well go 4 ohm, for cabs smaller than a 410 I'd always go 8 ohm and use 1 or 2 cabs depending on the gig.
Plus 1! I use an 8ohms Aguilar GS112 for most gigs with my LMIII. Puts out 300w and its more than loud enough with occasional DI help. I only ever wheel out a second cab if I need the extra volume (ie outside gigs etc).

For that price, they better be made from adamantium!

Yes and no. Personally I think the RX270 is a dreadful bass. Pickups are crap and it feels cheap (tone knobs are stiff/grind and the woods feel cheap). However, I agree to some extent as every Jap Fender I've ever played has been far better than a similarly spec'd US equivilant and there are a LOT of inexpensive basses these days that really hold their own. The Ibanez SR300 range is unbelievable quality for under £300 (and is the reason that I dislike the RBX270, because in comparison the Ibanez is much better). Also, one of the nicest basses I've played in the 12 months was an Allen Woody Rumblekat, which retails at about £279 and its an Epiphone Custom Shop model! Great value for money. I'm not sure I can agree with you that an RBX270 is as good as a Fender though. It's not even as good as a VM Squier IMO. Sorry!
OK, I've had a fiddle, and this is my finding. With the clean level off, I set the octave and octave filter at 12. Then I rolled off the octave level 'till there was no sound. I rolled the octave level back up, and there is a point when the knob is moving, and then the signal starts slightly later, but to my ears and movement on the knob it is so slight that I thought this is how it should be. Remember it is a sampled signal, so I guess there has to be sufficient input gain in order for the sample to be generated (or something!) Also the signal when it starts was very quiet, and rolling on the knob it gets louder in what I consider a progressive manner. And by that I mean it all behaved as I expected it to behave.. But maybe we have different expectations, but without A,B'ing our pedals it's difficult to tell. I find the way to get a very slight octave signal is to play with the octave filter, it goes from clean-sub at minimum over to distortion at full. And a nice valve-y distortion too, not unlike my DHA VT1 EQ. Hope this helps
Plus one. Controlling it with the filter controls rather than the octave level is the way to do it!
Hi Just wanted to know everyone's experience with this monster of a head. Cheap and loud with a lot of eq shaping is what is making me get this. Before I do just would like some input on this head cheer!
I thought the same thing about the LG350. Small, cheap , perfect volume for lessons. Thought it would be ideal for my students and thought the multiple controls for the EQ would allow me to fine tune a good sound... It doesn't. Even running it through my Aggy cabs, it sounds cheap and the EQ is either too drastic and harsh or has little impact, there's no 'sweet spot'. But what should I expect for a second hand ashdown head!! It's perfect for what I need but I'd hate to think it was my main gigging amp!
I'd agree it's the DIY ethic that identifies punk for me. I thought the rave scene in the late '80s and early '90s was very punk actually.
+1 When you at band's like Rancid who refused to move from the little DIY labels to mainstream ones (unlike Greenday for example) that shows a true belief in retaining the punk ethics that they started out with but also being successful because of it. However, they are good musicians with the ability to execute most musical ideas but write music that expresses punk ideals (I.e. anti-virtuosic solos that react against the self-indulgence of rock guitar solos). I never thought the Pistols were punk. Just a bunch of idiots who couldn't play which dictates how their music turned out. Trying to claim youre punk because you're technically restricted isnt punk for me. Theres no active, considered rebellion against other music/musicians, it just happened through lack of choice/musicianship. If that's the case, my 86 year old nan would make a legendary punk bassist cos she can't play either!
nice bass - I do not think the finish is lacquer (nitro cellulose) though
The OP is correct. Nitrocellulose lacquer finish and tweed hard case are the improvements made for the 2013 Classic Series '60s Jazz Bass. Nitro is only available on the sunburst model though. Black and white models are still available but at the old spec (poly finish, no case!)
I play the ibanez, but I'm not a shredder! I mainly play Funk / RnB / Jazz / Hip Hop sort of things and it sounds lovely! I reckon it would be good for any style though
The EQ gives you the option for anything. Funk, fat P-Bass, growly jazz bass etc etc etc. truly awesome basses.

We've had all sorts of basses through our shop and for under £1000, the ibanez SR1200 was easily the best. Nordstrands are crazy good and the finish and playability are outstanding. I've just ordered the new SR1605 based on my love of the SR1200. As you can tell from my sig, normally I'm a fender with flats man through and through but I needed a 5er that can produce any tone and be comfortable for professional gigging (pits, reading etc) and I can't find anything that is better than the ibanez for the price I paid. Can't wait for it to arrive!!
There comes a point where you have to stop pretending that you're single and start respecting your partner by occasionally prioritising them over the lump of wood and metal on a stand in the corner.
Based on the info in this thread, there's a window of about 25 years for this to kick in or she's gone! I'm only two years in and pretty much GAS free! Mrs Skej made me quit my other path (graphic design) and pursue music professionally, offering a huge amount of support so hopefully she will be sticking around for a while yet

I just ordered the new SR1605 (Poplar Burl Top)! After spending DAYS/weeks playing the SR1200 we had in the shop and needing a bass with the low B for increasing reading gigs and a modern EQ for a versatile tonal range, I decided to go for the new premium SR1605. Same nordstrand pickups as the SR1200 but nicer top wood (IMO). http://www.guitarvillage.co.uk/product/13910/Ibanez-SR1605NTF-5-String-Premium-New-Natural-Flat-Inc-Case.aspx Next shipment isn't until October though, so the wait is on! Im very excited
How opportune... I believe the OP has already been contacted by pantherairsoft, but for those others who may be interested in this, might I direct your attention to www.reallyawesomepedalboards.co.uk
Perfect! I've been looking into an 'amp top' pedal board and can't find them anywhere. This could be just the solution!
Hey guys, I'm new to doing pub gigs and I'm hoping my band will be up and running soon so have a question, is an 810 cab to big for pub gig?? I'm looking to trade up to an all ampeg setup but wondering if it will be overkill. At the end of the day it has te same footprint as a 410....
Foot print is the same as a 4x10 but it won't be long before the other guys in the band tell you to stick it when you need a hand carrying into/out of venues. I go for a single 12 and the PA. Sounds great and I can carry my rig with no help needed. Keeps band friendships friendly lol!

FSR Antigua P bass, any idea how many were made?
skej21 replied to SammyDamacy's topic in Bass Guitars
They were indeed an FSR (Factory special run) model in 2012. The other FSR guitars were really limited (between 25-50) but there were more models, so the 250 you found would be about right I'd think as there were far fewer bass models. Whether or not that adds value or helps the model retain its value, I'm not sure but I got my hands on one in the shop and it was beautiful. IMO the worst thing you could do is put it under lock and key, never for it to see daylight again. Play it! That why it was made -
It's interesting. How do they compare against American Vintage J's and P's? They go for around 800 quid second hand?
John Blackman at fareastguitars sells 2nd hand MIJ/CIJ precision and jazz basses which go for less than £700 shipped (non export models). I've had a '75 RI Jazz and '62 RI Jazz from him and they play better than any USA AV series, US standard or US deluxe basses I've ever played (and I work in a guitar shop, so play a lot of gear!). I'd buy Japanese Fenders before US every time. Better quality, similar components and much better value for money. Just my opinion though
Out of interest, which flats did you put on yours?
D'Addario Chromes... ECB81M, the shorter scale set
-
We had one of these in my shop and it was only one set of flats away from excellence! You can buy this bass, it's hard case and a set of decent flats for less than £400! Unbelievable value really. I've actually ordered one for my younger students (who struggle with scale length or don't own a bass) so that they have something inexpensive yet good quality to use in lessons. No doubt I'll be gigging the hell out it in between that too!

I've been told by venues before that back line would be supplied, turned up, plugged in and turned to the other band's bassist and said 'the back line they provided is pretty good!', to be met with the response 'that's my amp, not the venues... They didn't ask me if you could use it but I don't mind'. I always thank the bassist who brings the back line if I know about it lol. It can be a bit awkward and often it's the venues fault for taking advantage of the willingness of others to play/bring their own gear. Luckily, I always take my Aggy Tone Hammer pedal so just use the provided amp for volume/power and control the EQ from the pre amp. It also gives me te option of just DI if communication goes wrong. Now that I'm down to using just one 12" cab and an amp that fits in my gig bag, it's rare that I don't take my rig to most gigs, even if it sits in the car all night.

Amazing basses. I ordered one into our shop as I'd heard good things and the quality from the Epiphone custom shop is really great and the price is phenomenal! I was just about to buy it but someone beat me to it. The wait is about 6-12 months to reorder so I won't be getting one, as I can't hold onto bass funds that long lol!
