  2. Oh no, the square string tree is a peculiarity of these basses, you can't shear it of part of its identity, can you?
  3. Ok, so, I’ve built the new loom from scratch, first time I’ve done that. I’m happy to report that everything works as it should, despite the dodgy soldering. Actually very pleased with it. So the body is pretty much done. Some alterations needed to get the pickguard to fit, but all good now. Good days work, just the fretboard/frets to finish….. but that’s for another day.

  5. Up for sale is my mate Nigel's Ashdown ORIGINal 300w microbass head model HD-1. The amp is being sold as Nigel has unfortunately passed away and his Family have asked me to sell on his gear, (12 Basses sold already - moving on to his amps and cabinets now). It's in great, unmarked condition, fully functional and there are very little usage marks on this unit . All in all its a very clean well looked after item which has been reliable from day one. Features on this unit are Effects send and return,, 1/4 '' Jack input for both passive and active basses, Hi-Lo input switch, Input gain, output gain and full bass mid and treble controls plus a shape control switch to alter the eq. There is also a DI output for connection to a pa system or mixing desk. At the rear of the unit there are two speaker outputs which run at 4 ohms. It can also be used with two 8 ohm cabs or a singe 8 or 4 ohm cab. The unit is also fan cooled and has an additional headphone socket also. These amps are very popular and retail new at between £370 and £429 so I am pricing this to sell. There is an option to collect the item but I would post to anywhere in the UK if the buyer arranges collection from me. I will accept cash on collection or bank transfer and/or Paypal. . 6. The problem is that this isn't mainstream covers stuff that you could play down a pub. To get any audience, you have to be able to market it, which realistically means doing a tribute to one of the bigger prog bands.
  7. I actually like the rectangular ones, and I’m trying to keep the bass as original as possible ish, but I know what you mean.
  8. Double P basses are the way to go... That looks great! GLWTS 👍
  9. Exactly, the same here. It also has the benefit of being very listenable to a lot of punters. A mate of mine (who used to be a promoter) described it as everybody over 40's guilty secret! I'm currently doing a blues project with a mate of mine who is a very good pro guitarist (i.e. teaches, plays in a good paying tribute and does deps for function bands, etc). I originally approached him to help me out as I had some decent gigs offered, but had been let down by the earlier version of the band. However, he jumped at the chance to put together a permanent band, as he had missed playing that type of music.
  10. I always fancied the idea of a Prog covers band rather than a dedicated tribute to one band. That way i could cover songs by all my fav bands from Genesis, Floyd, Camel, Hackett, Kansas, UK etc. I think the Bruford level of musicianship is probably a bit of a stretch for me. I agree that for me its best to compromise and be good at what you do. I never thought i'd ever play in a punk covers band but its actually great fun and the stamina required is quite a stretch when you play fingerstyle. Dave
  11. We've organised a gig at Exchange with some friends on the bank holiday Sunday at the end of the month. Should be fun!
  12. Pretty much my dream bass. I feel I've earned the right to own one having played 512 gigs in the last 5 yrs but the prices are really high at the moment so I'm just struggling to justify pulling the trigger.
  13. Off to the New Foresters soon. Going to take the Thunder 1 I got from @stewblack of this parish. Just had a quick warm up and it is ridiculously gnarly, the hottest p-bass pickups I have ever come across. Cafind a pic, so here's a gratuitous one of my brother with his Thunder 1A many years ago.
  14. There is a niche for most genres, although you might struggle trying to get an audience for playing Bruford covers! However, there are loads of Pink Floyd tributes doing well out there and a guitarist mate of mine is in a very successful Genesis tribute, who go out for a minimum £2k a night (even though personally I can't think of a band I would least like to be in a tribute to). I occasionally get the idea that I wouldn't mind doing the odd gig playing Billy Cobham 'Spectrum' type stuff . The trouble is that it is such a small niche where you will be up against music college kids, where merely being good isn't enough. I could play it, but would be likely to struggle with the competition in that area, even though I think that I could more than hold my own against many of them playing anything with a blues element to it! You always have to balance what you like with what you're good at, along with what audience there is for any potential project. Luckily, my musical preferences are reasonably mainstream(ish)!
  15. One year after my studies, in 1988, I bought a friend's Fender's bass and guitar for the equivalent of 620 Euros (around 530 GBP). I only wanted the bass, but as he was getting married, he needed the money and was willing to sell both the bass and the guitar. I bought both for the 25.000 Belgian Francs he wanted. I then just checked the guitar which turned to be an L series early 1965 Fender Stratocaster (badly) painted in white ... with a brush as my friend was sick of its Fiesta Red. I sold it quite instantly to my friend Christophe Leduc (yes the French luthier) for the same amount, 620 Euros, he totally restored it and still have it today and you know its value which is around 20 times the price he bought it. The bass was a 1971 Precision Bass that I kept for a year or two, and sold for 30.000 Belgian Francs, so basically 30.000 times the price I paid as I eventually got it for free in the deal.
  16. Just checking out the David Essex tune, never seen mention of him on the NS scene. More unexpected tunes than on a lot of the compilations.
  17. well who'd a thunk it first in with a silly soundscape Ibby 6 string through a couple of waves gtr3 patches , loads of synth type sounds from the digital pianola and a couple of samples from Freesound modified a bit.
  18. When i started playing bass it was Thin Lizzy, Kiss, Deep Purple and then moved onto Prog bands like Genesis and Floyd and eventually Camel and that's when i ventured into bands like Bruford, Brand X, Moraz, Mahavishnu, Gino Vannelli and a lot of other bands where the bass playing was that bit more challenging. I've never claimed to be a Jazz bassist but i did learn a lot from those types of bassists. Dave
  19. The Psychodahlias are headlining The Hope & Anchor in Islington 17th May. Come along and say ‘allo. John
  20. About 15 years ago, I was deep in an obsessive mode regarding Music Man Stingray basses. I still love them, but since I've started having issues with my fretting hand, I've found life a lot easier with slightly narrower necks. Also being a Status fan, I was on the lookout for one of the elusive NAMM Stingray Specials with the Status neck. Only 100 made and they came up for sale very infrequently. Things happen when you least expect them and I found one for sale one day in a small music shop in the middle of nowhere. Apparently, the guy who bought it from new didn't even know how to play bass and it had been in its case been under his bed for years. I bought it for a very respectable price and walked out of the shop a very happy man indeed. It as, as they are referred to around these parts, a keeper.
  21. I was listening to Ten Years After at Reading 83 (I was there) and realised how much I owe to Leo Lyons, back when I was learning I used to play along to Watt and Ssssh back to back. Leo was/is a serious jazz player, listen to Undead. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undead_(Ten_Years_After_album)
  22. Just bought a wonderful Sire v7 fretless. This has come with a set of Daddario chromes flatwounds, but I intend to use light rounds on this bass due to hand issues, which I I've bought so these are surplus. Gauge 45- 132 beefy B string, they'll fit any jazz/p style/musicman 5. They've been used (but not much) so settled but still full of life, the silks are immaculate and as new. £35 posted to your door (uk only)
  23. The Baby Quasar, is the Analog phase part of the mighty Quasar (without the extra digital bells and whistles) It's a very versatile 4 stage Phaser, with control over the centre frequency which should be standard on all phasers, as well as resonance and depth/rate. It can do the warm phase 90 thing, but also can have a very bright aggressive sound, which works perfectly with fuzz, it has a very wide range . It can also run up to 12v for extra headroom, very cool phaser indeed, I've tried loads of others and this is my favourite, just need to unlock a bit of cash. It has a bit of the wording worn off, but other than that in good condition, very small pedal in a pretty palma violet colour. Comes with the original Box
