We did a ticketed charity gig last night at a local music venue. It was our gig, our singer organised it all (the venue also helped masses). As we're still a newish band, this was our 6th gig, it was a bit squeaky butt timeas to how many would turn up. In the end we were absolutely chuffed to get a decent number there. And a great crowd they were as well. It was a really cracking night and we raised several hundred £s in the end. We had support from a former band mate of mine, who did a great solo set and went down a storm. We're all still buzzing I think.

That's fascinating - I had a similar issue with the pickup placement on the original Jason Smith designed Fender Rascal. The pickups were too far over to the left of your playing position, making the bass virtually unplayable on a strap. Rickenbacker have made some very odd choices here...

In my two gigging bands we had set formats, either rehearsing a set for a gig, or rehearsing to prepare for recording. If the latter the songwriters would bring the gist of the song in and then we would work on it together to get it in its final form. In my non-gigging band we often suggest a new song and learn it, only for the guitarist to turn up having forgotten to do just that. In his defence he is like this throughout life, not just with regards to the band.

FWIW, I think this is currently the best bargain on Basschat. What a lovely bass, and if it's an Overwater it'll be top quality. -
We rehearse at a volume whereby we can hear ourselves properly. We're not a loud band anyway, but it's important to actually hear what's going on. We also set up in such a way that we can all hear each other. In the round, generally. We usually run the sets and then do new songs. We don't add new songs constantly. I guess the number of years we've been doing this also helps. No superfluous noodling or tapping, just straight to work. Sometimes a curry afterwards.

We have a really good band leader who is pretty smart. We only rehearse 3 or 4 new ones at a time and he will always expect us to have learned them. It’s good because we pretty much always will. Doing this means we only rehearse once a month. Helps that we’re all music teachers and a lot of the work we do is on arrangements. If stuff needs to be worked on then we’ll do a dedicated session to focus on certain things. Works really well.

Of course you're going to get a lot of replies along the lines of 'it all depends on...' and they won't be wrong. Golden rule obviously, rehearsals are not for individuals to learn a song, that should be prep work, so much as learning how to play the song as a band. Lessons learnt, I always would record rehearsals on a small Zoom H2n in the middle of the room and give everyone a copy on an SD so they could hear how badly they played and hopefully everyone would come to their own conclusion as to what needs working on. Easier that musicians come to that conclusion themselves rather than be told.

Fender Precision 50's Classic Series Excellent condition

This is a top quality bass, both in build quality and tone, it sounds phenomenal and exactly as a P bass should. Excellent condition apart from a tiny ding at the back of the strap button at the bottom of the bass and can barely be seen even up close. I have upgraded the bass with the following - Norstrand NP4a pickups /CTS pots /Switchcraft jack /WD Black 3 ply scratch plate /tug bar. Set up by the man himself...Mr Jon Shuker and is extremely easy to play all up the fretboard. Ernie Ball Super Slinky 45/60/80/100 strings fitted. Sorry I don't have the original parts as I really didn't intend selling this bass ever. Only selling as I've had to buy a new central heating boiler which cost a fortune. Comes with the original fender gig bag in top condition as it hasn't been used for gigging. Absolutely any trial welcome. Sorry no trades thanks. I really don't want to courier this bass due to no packaging/bad experience, so pick up preferred but would drive a reasonable distance to meet up with petrol cost. I would consider 2 instalment payments. I will also include my hardly used Tascam bass trainer with original power supply.-

This whole endeavour by Rickenbacker is just very strange. Where have they got the idea that there is a need and indeed demand for a 30 inch scale bass that is essentially as big as a full-size Rick? It's so weird a project that I could never have imagined it had it not happened. A scaled-down 4003/4001 would have been a sure-fire hit, what with the enduring trend for short scale basses. There isn't going to be overwhelming demand for these 4030 basses, I would predict.

We have just had two rehearsals where things have not gone according to plan. Poor preparation. Do you have a pre-agreed agenda when you go in? How much time do you dedicate to new material? How many times do you run through problem numbers? How do you ensure the message gets across? Do you send out summaries of work done so it sticks? How do you make it work for you? Hints and tips please!

Don't. Spring connectors work by deforming the copper wire, which prevents it from vibrating out. If tinned it's too stiff to deform. I've been using spring connectors for at least 30 years, have yet to have the wire pull out. Victor Wooten lost all credibility when he started endorsing huge, and hugely expensive, power cables that don't do anything. I'm surprised he doesn't have a Shakti Stone atop his amp. Maybe they can't afford him? 😮

Master on about 3, Ch 2 volume on 4. Absolutely glorious. What it's like with the taps wide open, we can only guess at the moment. I just need the opportunity. You can hear all the tubey, valvey goodness going on that you just don't get with solid state. It's like there's something alive in there 🤫
