I have re read your post so my original comments now removed are not valid, thought you were referring to the nylon guide on a zero fretted bass. what a difference that full stop makes 🤫

I guess his name isn't well known amongst the general public, but as a 1st call session player in LA, he wasn't unknown or underrated by the music business. I first heard him in the early 70's when I bought the 2nd Crusade double album. His bass lines were simple, effective and musical.

Fiesta Red. What a weird colour. I‘m really surprised by the amount of instruments manufactured and, apparently, being sold in this shade of red. Is it the Pino effect? I don’t know. What surprises me so much about it being so readily available across various price points is not only that is a deeply weird colour, in my opinion: Is it red? pink? orange? tomato soup? Well … yes, all of the above! But really, in this day and age of buying online based on pictures, there‘s still one problem with digital photography: To accurately capture a particular shade of red is actually really hard for most cameras, at least without careful correction / editing afterwards. Because of this, I‘d assume at least part of the Fiesta Red online buying population might expect a bright red instrument in the mail, only to receive some weird pinkish tomato by courier. I remember aeons ago when I was playing skinny strings, I had a beautifully playing Strat-type with a lovely flamed maple neck and a P90 in the bridge position. Finished, of all things, in Fiesta Red. I abhorred that colour, ultimately let the instrument go because of it and soon after, all other tenors in my collection. So in a way, Fiesta Red might be the catalyst for me growing into my role as a bassist. Possibly. Which makes somewhat a circle with my latest acquisition: A Music Man (US) Classic Sterling in EBMM‘s take on Fiesta, that is Coral Red. (I don’t know if they are the exact same shade of red but they are certainly close siblings.) I bought this bass primarily to switch its maple neck onto my natural Classic Sterling (with a rosewood board), but even after successful surgery, I can’t seem to let it go: That bass, and that colour, are simply too much fun. And you know something else? I actually like tomato soup.

I'm just wondering why you would alter a zero fret design, as it is the zero fret that is setting the string height and is same material as all other frets, The nylon string guide is just that, any plastic material will do just to keep the strings in line over the zero fret. The only reason I changed one on my Status Electro was allowing for different coated strings of larger diameter than the current slots. So made a new guide out of i nice piece of Yew i had, which complemented the body and fret-board. but the zero fret stayed.

I honestly don’t see the point of buying knock off chinese instruments for £200+ plus. There are loads of used instruments on Basschat marketplace that will be loads better for the same price and will still be worth what you pay for them 10 years later. The Ali express knock offs will most likely be firewood.

... with Japanese pots and mixed American and Japanese wires, mixed parts pre and post 1969 bridge (longer intonation G string screw at the ... E string), totally wrong knobs, really bad refret job with non Brazilian rosewood fingerboard as it's definitely not that wood (maybe already replaced once), questionable stamped neck plate, possibly warped neck, black screws for the control plate, and certainly more surprises under the pickguard and tuners : AVOID THIS!

I think AliExpress is fine for getting things which are the exact same as what you'd get from Amazon/etc. but much cheaper. However, based on comments in an FB group, that's not precisely the case for copy guitars and the quality and accuracy can be quite variable. There are some sellers who use pics of real ones in their ads, which is not what you're going to get. Also (of course) the £250 Chibson is not a £4000 real one, so it's not like-for-like. Plus, you may find it difficult to sell one on, depending on where you want to offer it. So, a £250 Chibson is ok for a bit of fun, but it then becomes a £150 plank. There are people who put money into upgrades, but it might be better just getting something better (Epi, Vintage, etc.) to start with.

When it comes to the OP, less would be nothing at all. DeOxit has wrecked a lot of gear according to Agedhorse. Less is more is a good maxim.

Yes I recall buying a bass from a guy in the States in 2008, as it was cheaper than buying it from a guy down the road, even with the postage and duty added. The exchange rate was $2 to the pound back then.
