Heathy started following Rickenbacker 4003S Satin Autumn Glo

I saw the Scorpions at the NEC with Winger opening for them back in, crikey 1990/91 maybe? My copies of Worldwide Live (VHS and cassette) were both worn to the bone too.

New venue with a new band last night, our first solo gig together. Enjoying playing with a keyboard player again, not done that since the 90’s. Crowd seemed to like it and venue said we’ll be invited back, so a good start to the new venture. Different stage presence, being just the bass player at the back and a frontman in front of me. Having spent two weeks in bed this year, so unfit and ribs were killing me, with the weight of the bass, so was wilting by the end of the night. Any advice on how to get fitter is appreciated.

To paraphrase Frank Zappa “talking about (how a bass guitar sounds) is like tap-dancing about architecture” looks nice, but it seems like a pointless video unless we can hear the thing!

VTypeV4 started following Educate me on Trace Elliot V-Type preamp
-
The V-Type pre-amp is lovely - not to everyones taste, agreed as mentioned above but it gives a certain tonality that's hard to recreate with pretty much anything else. I don't have the stand alone pre, I do, however have a V4 MK2 and a V6 - both are glorious. I supplement them with additional EQ and compression (typically a Yamaha NE-1 and Boss LMB-3 or Ampeg Opto comp) but I feel they're of a clean 'open and bold' character - some say they're Fender style but I don't strictly agree with that as my Bassman 135 has very little in common with the Trace Elliot.. There's no real distortion or overdrive from the front end so if you're after that, it's probably not ideal for you.. Here's a review I did a while back.. ^^

Agreed. He is also partly the reason that I bought a Warwick Streamer 😜

Needs to be mint, pristine white for me. I don't do aged/roadworn instruments....

How do i clear my photo cache on the site?
tauzero replied to JGSpector's question in Site Issues and Questions
Go into "My Attachments". Open the particular image.png that you want to rename (I use Irfanview) and save it as a named file (preferably a .jpg), resized if desired. Then look at the right-hand side of the "My Attachments" page, open the post that the image is in by clicking on it, and edit it - replace image.png with the named file, then remove that particular image.png. A bit laborious but you get it done in the end. -
The bum - puckering drilling done today in @HeadlessBassist graphite neck sourced from @Kiwi. My advice for anyone doing this for their own neck…..pillar drill set at slowest speed, new sharp cobalt drill bit which was 9.5mm to fit the supplied threaded inserts. I did some test holes into scrap wood to get the drill size and technique. Make sure the drill bit doesn’t get hot and clear the swarf regularly during drilling as this can generate heat. Holes are slightly chamfered/countersunk so the inserts are under the neck surface to make the joint completely flat. The machine screws supplied with the neck are M5 but are torx headed. A couple of these rounded off so I am replacing with M5 x 40mm Philips head. Tuner mounting screws and tree string screw should also be machine screws and into inserts.

I know exactly what you mean. There’s a way of designing a tube based preamp in conjunction with transformers which just sits right, sounds right and feels right to play. For many of us a compressor adds to that but at its fundamental core tone there’s a magic from transformers which is more present, deeply analogue and has a saturation and fatness which is very different to tubes. I’ve checked out the United D.I. on you tube and it’s a solid unit. We really should meet up and chat tone some day 🙂 The BR15 does a lovely thing but it’s not everyone’s ideal sound. It’s a classic sound but quite specific. I respect your choice and applaud it! -
Well, I just made myself unpopular. Got excited and pushed the wee Joyo to the max, got an angry text from Mrs. Neepheid who was upstairs having a nap. Whoops, this little amp is a bit more pokey than I first thought.

The DM610 is a large bookshelf/standmount speaker from renowned hi-fi brand B&W, featuring a well-braced 30-litre sealed cabinet with 8-inch mid-bass driver. The larger driver and extra cabinet space create a much better low end range than from most similar speakers. This model allows for either bi-wiring or bi-amplification. These speakers present clean tight bass response, surprisingly clear mids for such a large driver and the pleasant highs that the well-designed B&W tweeter at that time was famous for. They can be driven quite loud, enough for the physical effect of the bass to be felt without audible distortion or a sense of sound compression. Both speakers are in Very Good condition, especially for their vintage. All-original, complete with full grilles (one of which has a small hole, shown in the final photo). Only £125. Collection from Bournemouth BH6 preferred. Here comes the science bit… Type: 2-way closed, shelf speaker Colour: Ash black veneer Dimensions: 490 x 236 x 303 mm (H x W x D) Weight: 7.8 kg Recommended amplifier power: 30-150 W Frequency response: 70 - 20,000 Hz (±2 dB) Crossover: 2500 Impedance: 4 Ohm

The Zoo was the first song I learned to play all the way through on bass. Saw them at least once at Hammersmith. RIP sir

I think it's a bit of a shame that the Octamizer has gone digital. You can get decent digital octave up/down (and other features like semitones) in most multi-fx, but the analogue Octamizer with the tilt EQ on the clean is I think unique. Octavers are one of the only effects that there really does seem to be a noticeable difference in tone between analogue and digital.

With my thanks going to @HeadlessBassist for agreeing to collect this from Rotherham and meet me at Membury services (mentioned positively in the 2019 Gavin and Stacey here is a 1981 Aria TSB 550. I have only ever seen one other fretless one of these in this colour and it belonged to Frank Allen from The Searchers. Undergoing some TLC as the truss rod is seized atm So 3 in 1 oil into it and fingers crossed I can sort it 32 inch scale and MB 3 pickup

Choose a 5 string bass for £500 (ish)

And I wish I could find a 5 string black one for £420. Cheapest I've ever seen in such a good condition as yours is £500 P.S. Such a shame Cort only make 'em in the two colours. I think they've missed a trick there -

I think I ultimately couldn't get on with the mid focused sound and the 1x15" cab SIM. The build quality and functionality is up there with the very best studio equipment and the sound was fantastic if you wanted the B15 experience. I've come to the conclusion that my sound is full range and clean. IMHO the Rheingold preamp with a vintage transformer Di just does it for me. -

Sounds intriguing however I still have a 1972 Fender Precision (4 string in boring old traditional sunburst) my Grandfather bought for me in 1973 so not really after another Precision. That red P5 is a real looker though 😍 -
Lovely looking basses, shame they're 4s not 5s (not surprising as they're late 70s when 5-string basses were yet to become established).

bluetinfloor started following Rickenbacker 4003S Satin Autumn Glo

Bought this 4003S ltd edition new from my local music shop in Morecambe last year. 2025 model and the Satin Autumn Glo is a UK/Europe only version. Recent purchase of a Custom Shop P Bass necessitates sale... I would grade this basically "as new"... fitted with Pyramid flats and set up by Promenade Music, I have played it for less than an hour. Priced at £2375 Comes with everything as new including original unused strings and I also bought some Tone/Volume marked knobs from Ricky Sounds which will come with it and these are shown in one of the photos, but it wears its original cooker knobs. Collection preferred from Morecambe or could meet Carlisle to Manchester M6 corridor. Happy to use a courier at buyer cost. Thanks
