Ha! Today I learned

Its interesting that you two should mention this. I do some work with a guitarist who has Dunlop straplocks on all his guitars and the only ones that have failed (repeatedly) have been fitted to Les Pauls. The top horn position. We have never been able to figure out why. They click into place OK and seem tight (we can't pull them out of the button) but once he's stood in playing position it only takes a few minutes for it to fail. Tried a couple of sets with the same result. He's got quite heavy leather straps so maybe the weight has something to do with it. Having said that he's got the same type straps on his V and Explorer and they are secure with no problems. Its very odd.

Could someone who has the pedal please answer this? How does the portamento behave when you leave gaps between consecutive notes? Is the portamento gated? i.e. does the pitch transition pause when you leave a space in between the notes and pick up again as soon as you play another note, or does the pitch transition continue in the background. You can test by doing the following: Set portamento to maximum. Play 20th fret on G (Eb) then (taking care to mute the other strings) play the open E. Note how long the transition takes. Now, play the high Eb again and stop. Leave a pause equal to or longer than the time the pitch transition took last time. Now, play the low E. Is there still portamento happening or does the note play cleanly without pitch transition?

Not many people know this, but I've got a time machine. I've just popped forward to 2029 to see what's going on there. A few things happening: 1. The USA has repealed the Declaration of Independence and is now known as 'Western Surrey'. 2. Joey Essex has just been elevated to the House of Lords. 3. You're buying all your basses back. Seriously though... it's always sad when factors cause one to fall out of love with anything, especially music. I really hope your new project brings you the enjoyment that your current one doesn't. Just don't sell everything.

Kiwi, sorry to bug you when there's so much to be done. Can I please ask why these ones have wooden boards and not the peek of the other necks? Would it be best to have a central discussion thread for all of these questions, and then keep the separate threads just for ordering? I wonder if you've already answered the above somewhere where I can't see it and I'm sure none of us want to waste your time answering.

Good luck Andy and well done. When the faff outweighs the fun it's no longer worth your time. Enjoy your new venture. It's actually gift to find yourself in a position where you can play whatever you want whenever you want, plus you don't really need much gear to enjoy simply playing music. Lose the baggage 👍 (Regarding singing - I hear you! I have a plan to get a couple of singing lessons with a good teacher to at least find where my voice sits and how to engage it correctly. How to warm up etc.. It's never too late, keep on growing).

That would be potentially very interesting. Pickups are one of those areas that are going to be an awful lot more complex than at first sight... "yeah well it's just a magnet with some wire innit?", I doubt that somehow Would it be worth re-approaching these chaps much closer to the time?

My Markbass combo has top mounted controls, but I don't find it bothersome - mostly because it's stacked on top of a New York 121, so the controls are elevated to easily used territory - high enough so I don't have to bend down but not so high that I can't see the controls. But my rig is sitting flat on the deck, so I'm clearly from an irrelevant, bygone era

Sorry to hear you're out of love with the band, Andy. I guess I'm in a lucky position where I get to work with lots of people, but I can't afford to play for nothing with people I don't want to be with. I feel for you and hope you'll find some great, like minded folks to make some great music with soon.

Hi Peter, sorry for the late response, @Lozz196 sorted me out with one!

Why do amp manufacturers still put the controls on the top of combos? It's not the 50 and 60s any more. No-one (not even tribute bands of artists from that era) puts their amps on the floor and then stands behind them. The position of the controls should reflect how the amps are used in the real world today (on stands and normally angled upwards) and not reflect some bygone era that is now irrelevant.

It’ll be brilliant fun. There are lots of great books on jazz improvisation. I’d also recommend ready a music theory book or two if you have access to one to brush up on some of the fundamentals. I’ll see if I have a spare one somewhere.
