Oh well, The Bass Gallery were kind enough to reply to my slightly mad request as to whether they still had any info on file about the bass. They don't! I'll never know exactly what it was, but I can console myself with the fact that it is probably worth even more now and still out of financial reach!

How was your open mic or jam night last night?
Phil Starr replied to tauzero's topic in General Discussion
It's a confidence thing, I've rarely jammed along to anything and I hate being out of control. I've not got a great ear either. Playing something I've never heard before without even a chord chart sounds to me about as embarrassing as appearing naked in public I used to run an open mic night/jam session and was looking to build up the idea of a 'great song book' which as an organser would have helped me to get as many people as possible on stage and performing. I always liked the idea of getting sole musicians/young musicians the chance of performing with other musicians and was gradually building up a house band to support this. Sadly the pub relaunched as a gastropub just as we really got going. -

Okay. Quick update. I took the scratchplate off last night and had a look under the cover. Nothing on the preamp but it's all nicely installed - very tidy. Having a good close-up look at the top it's going to be an incredibly thin layer of flamed maple as when I look at the thing in profile where it's been scraped clean and you can see the indivdual laers you can't actually see the top at all - it may look like there's a deep top in the photo but the grain of the body almost goes up to the varnish. Must be paper-thin. Anyway. It's fine. I took the action down a few notches as I prefer things a bit lower and it's very nice. Plays great. Sounds okay, you just have to back everything off a lot, so if the bass is 10%, mid centred at 50% and the treble at centred at 50% you get a really nice tone out of it. Whack the treble up and it gets very stingrayish indeed. A lot closer than a bass this cheap has any right to do. The strings on it at the moment are perfectly serviceable - seem to be odd ones from different sets but that's fine as it sounds and plays perfectly well. I may keep an eye out for a set of cheap flats at some point and throw those on - could be a fun exercise but I really have no plans to do anything else to this bass as it's really just a beater. -

Not seen that one, but I do have one of the M-VAVE Blackbox pedals, and recently got the chocolate bluetooth 4-button controller for it. Together I think they've cost maybe £80, and for a quick solution to a jam night tone, it actually works really well(!) - I still haven't really got a compressor I like on it working, and I haven't looked at any impulse response stuff at all yet. The chorus on it is pretty good, and it does have one or two insane reverbs for studio use. For something needing no PSU, which you can chuck in the gig bag, the convenience is undeniable. I've upgraded the SW in it twice and it's been a pretty painless process. The editor for the patches is good, too, and onboard edit with the screen is actually remarkably well laid out. It's no Anagram, but hell... it's a £50 pedal FFS!

I totally agree and he certainly influenced me a lot. His melodic approach and use of playing an open root note while playing a melody on another string is something I learnt from him and an integral part of my playing. -

Its Sky Arts which I do like a lot, but which also means its producing content which is easily understood by everyone. This means there idea of a "Greatest bassline " will discuss work that the general public can easily understand.. ie something like Pink Floyds Money...or the Cures A Forest. Not necessarily clever in the bass sense but immediately recognisable as a very good ....'Bassline'. -
I've put an MTD humbucker in my Z3, it wasn't hugely different in tone (maybe a little more bottom end/clarity), but it looks so much better with wider pole spacing:

It was hard at first TBH, the guitarist borrowed my Strat and proceeded to blaze up and down the neck like a man possessed. He loved the Strat and I just looked on and inwardly sighed as he was 100x better than myself. I blame the fact that my fingers all point in different directions, please do not mention Tommy Iommi and his lack of finger ends, it doesn't help me here . Once we got the rhythm sorted out, it did start to click. I started running up the dusty end of the bass and then realised the bloke on the mixer had basically cut off anything above D on a filter on the mixer, so had to move down again. I wasn't really sure what it sounded like at all. Everybody was very nice but we were also very nice to the lady who was strangling and disembowelling a cat earlier in the evening. For next time, I'll try and have the Basschat 8" speaker with me, and politely drop that in the corner. Anyway, early days, the fact that the lady got away singing with a voice like that gave me hope my bass playing wasn't too bad. Rob -
I've done some improvements to my board itself over the last few weeks. First up, the feet all needed replacing. I leave my board in the flightcase so I just have to lift off the lid and plug in, but the feet I had on there were pulling the T-nuts out of the wood. I cut up some old spare laminate flooring for extra height, and glued and screwed new feet on. They're much more secure now. And then, I've had a big plug socket coming out from the power supply for years. The velcro keeps falling off it too. It wasn't a great solution. I finally found a better method with a panel mount IEC socket extension lead (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008002957857.html). So the top goes from this: To this: Much tidier and room for more pedals should I ever change up my setup!

Virtually new Fender Bassman 100 cover from Roqsolid, i got it to use while my flightcase was being manufactured so was only used briefly. Its a little dusty but will wipe. They're about £65 new + shipping Cover is in Hope Valley, happy to post within UK, probably gonna cost a tenner just for how small it doesn't fold up.

I think bassists are the worst people to pick the three best bass lines as it'll most likely be some virtuoso nonsense like Joe Dart or Jaco Pistorious or some million note a second slapper. Here's my possibly terrible pics. Peaches - The Stranglers Rotten Apple - Alice In Chains Turnover - Fugazi -

The P is about as standard as they come. When I say they are old, they are at least 20 years old so it might be that they are just super mature and all the boing has been boinged out of them.

I've got a Double Trolley by Marc Grue. I got it broken and have mended it to be in usuable condition. I found this unusable, where the wheels were bent, and the wheel frame did no fit the stool, and the latch under the seat snapped and a few other problems. I've put a new latch on and rebent the frame, cleaned it up and tighten some loose parts so that it is in good working condition. I've have tried and tested a couple of times going to and from, and at rehearsals. This is a trolley which helps move your bass around and conveniently doubles up as a stool. Tyres hold pressure, and will require a bungee to fasten to your bass. Find out more about it here: https://doubletrolley.com/index.php Due to the size of the item, I would prefer not to post. Can meet halfway or deliver if not too far away. I can provide more pictures on request. Open to offers. Thank you

Akai E2 Headrush delay/looper - Price drop - £70 posted
iamtheelvy replied to iamtheelvy's topic in Effects For Sale
Remarkable lack of interest on this classic on both here and the ‘bay. Great delay tones, but one of the most intuitive (if limited in length) looper out there, as used by KT Tunstall and Steve Lawson (and I believe the E1 version on Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood’s pedalboard). Not getting enough use here though, so need to shift it on! -
