I didn’t realise that. I appreciate caveat emptor exists at auctions, but that’s a fundamental flaw you’d hope would be checked when a bass was brought in to sell. If you were to turn up with some tools and try to adjust the truss rod, you’d quickly be warned off, for example. Glad you got it sorted and will be happy. I did see the Shuker, and it looked lovely. -

Wouldn’t say I’m a total beginner, but not far off. I’ve got a Katana GO, which is incredible, so I can play along to music & videos, but I jump about. I need some direction & discipline. I want to learn at least basic theory so I can identify the key of a song & know what to play over it. If you were starting out today, how would you go about it? Is that BassBuzz Beginner to Baddass worth the £157? Are there better alternatives? Thanks!

I agree entirely, but when material things have emotional value, the value lies in the emotions rather than the thing, and emotions are deeply personal and subject to change. If other people don't share those memories and sentiments it could be very hard to get your £20,000 back out of this bass. -
It was our first time at the 1912 in Sileby and what a great sounding room, with a nice vibe too. They had a low stage in the corner with plenty of room to fit a band on, and more importantly plenty of power sockets in good working order (which makes a change!). The venue also put some effort into advertising the event. We had a room full, but probably 90% were our regular followers. I'd have hoped for a few more locals. With the room sounding so good it probably lifted our performance a little more than normal too. We started off with a bit of rock and prog, but for the last set got much more dancy and filled the floor. We had a great night and lots of compliments. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention. The guitarist brought along his old 70s strat which was his sole guitar when we were all poor in the 80s and only had one guitar each. We played together for about 10 years, him on his strat and me on my Aria SB-1000. Well tonight, after much anticipation, he said it left him cold. He struggled to get it to sing and ended up playing the Vintage (brand) thinline tele he'd brought as a spare. He thinks maybe he's just no longer a strat guy, although I did mention he hadn't got the old Marshall combo he used to lug around. At least he still loves the guitar I built for him - a super-lightweight LP Junior double cut copy with twin P90s 😁 And look, the lights change colour 😂

I bought a Shuker Uberhorn fretless last year which turned out to have a duff truss rod - in a way it was a blessing, as I took it to Jon who is almost finished rebuilding it with a new fingerboard and truss rod and a scale length revised from 35" to a tad over 34". Hoping to pick it up next week. OTOH, the Barcus 6-string fretless I got for a pretty good price (IIRC it was below the original starting price) is great. Incidentally, the ludicrous fan-fret Megatar didn't sell last time out and it's back again. If you want a straight 12-string tapper, fine, but all Megatar/Stick tunings that I've found have the six bass-side strings with the lowest string closest to the centre of the fretboard, completely obviating the point of a fan fret. You'd need chevron frets to make sense of it. -

I have both. The Lakland is a great bass if you need a polished smooth sound and works best to my mind if you have a lot of different genres to cover in a gig because it can just about do it all in my humble opinion. I really like the switching on the humbucker giving 60s and 70s single coil spacing or full HB as opposed to the usual series/parallel/single coil. The two I have owned have both had clear sounding open and fretted notes on the B string. For years and years the Stingray 5 was my favourite bass and it's still a bass I hold in very high esteem. Not so versatile as the 55-02 obviously but does what it does really well and has a quality to the sound that just always fits in a mix. The B string is consistently superb from one example to another so whatever they did on this bass back at the design stage nearly 40 years ago they got it nigh on perfect for a 34" scale length. Necks are a fair bit different on these two and they don't sound alike imo. Definitely two separate flavours worth having!

https://on.soundcloud.com/6JQCn0Lt5YfoMt2OVQ Something a little jazzy for a change, inspired by BlueNote Organ jazz, a bit of Wes Montgomery and possibly Pink Floyd and Pat Metheny for good measure. Many thanks to Phil Beavis for the Hammond Organ part, really made it, for me!
