What are your irrational prejudices? I have some bonkers ones...
kwmlondon replied to kwmlondon's topic in General Discussion
Ditto. My Dingwall has been off for a couple of days for a repair to the preamp and I’ve been mainly playing my old Stingray and it’s completely not me any more. Gonna be listing it for sale soon… -
Gasp, I've just ordered a set of roundwound strings!
ossyrocks replied to ossyrocks's topic in General Discussion
Well, I've tried, but the honeymoon is over. They just aren't for me. -

So, my foray into rounds has come to an end and I'm back to flats. To be fair, I almost kept these, but then every time I picked up a bass with flats on, I liked it more. Only two weeks old, cut for Fender P or J, but generously, with three or four turns around the peg. I've played them every day, but only at home in the evening, and they have never been gigged. They are the best rounds I've heard, and these are the strings that Sean Hurley uses on his vintage P with rounds. Price includes postage. Rob

I recently changed the strings on my lovely Ibanez EHB 1265ms. I put in DR Dragon Skin+ Nickels. I bent the strings before cutting off the excess and was all ready for a final tune up when I spotted the A string unwinding. All the other string were fine, so I assumed it was a fault with the string. A replacement was sent and, you guessed it, the same thing happened. Any ideas for what I'm doing wrong, given that all the other strings are still fine?

Copy cat 😜 I got a shell pink one delivered in March last year, it'll be on his Insta if you want to see what that looks like. Viv doesn't go in for a crazy amount of options, but you could get a matching headstock, I think he still does ash and alder bodies, and binding. https://www.wilcocklondon.com/order-form

My purchase for next year will be a fretless 5 I practice quite a bit on fretless , lots of slow - mid tempo walking

There's some really interesting tonal interactions you can get with a combination of a fretless, a compressor and some overdrive - with the right balance, you get a tone that is creamy and warm, but cuts through everything and sits perfectly in a mix without overwhelming everything else. You're playing the effects as much as you're playing the bass at that point, but it's worth it.

Thank you everyone for your help. Especially I enjoyed Phil Starr's explanation of speaker development and it has taken me a long way towards understanding why they sounded as they did. One of the advantages, Phil, of being 73 is that I saw Free at the IOW in 69 and they were brilliant. I also owned a Marshall 50 watt in the late 70's, then traded it for a solid state, but I wish I still had it. My stage tone comes from overdriving the valve pre-amp a little, using the dirty switch on the amp, only using the bridge pickup (often turned to full treble) and playing with my fingers right up near the bridge, which as you know is hard work. I always ask for my cab to be mic'd, rather than DI, and I get a reasonably close sound to Andy Fraser, but it's still not clear enough and tends towards too much bass. I wonder if my bareface super compact could be some of the cause. One of their cabs can fill a whole venue by being multi-directional, and maybe this brings the room acoustics into the equation more. To be honest I am not very technical but I am grateful for any opinions. Pic is me in 69 in my first band. Back row, left.

Played my fretless last night at an acoustic jam in our village. I had to feel my way through a few unfamiliar tunes, but it felt great and blended very well. I enjoy having three options..passive p/j with rounds, active soap bar with flats, and the fretless. I believe these cover all situations I’m likely to experience.

Got this in a trade on here recently but it’s just not got much use. Between the green Russian and the grey stache that I own I have my fuzz needs covered. This one is two big muffs running in parallel, one of them has a standard tone control, the other has a mid boost/cut. Certainly a lot to play with and a lot of sounds to be gotten out of it! No original box with this but will be packaged securely. Price will include postage in the UK

I now find 4 strings weird.I skip over them in the classified ads for sale like you wouldn't believe. In fact I wish could filter them out of the search listings 😄 -
Not at the moment. Ive recently joined a alt rock band in Langport. We're writing and recording at the moment. Gigs later in the year hopefully. I was in a doom metal band in Devon before. My oldest daughter plays bass for Butane Skies, they're playing in Frome (and everywhere else) pretty regularly.

Sold mine last year, if only it had the neck profile of the status, for me the nut was too narrow (38mm from memory) I read that Ned asked Stanley Clarke for advice on the neck to which he advised a narrow nut and deep front to back, neither to my tastes🤷♂️
