  3. You are quite right. I can tell you from experience that stage / out-front volumes are nowhere near as loud as they were in the 70s / 80s / 90s

  6. Are bands getting louder? I'm not sure that assertion is supported by real world experiences. More and more bands and musicians are going for quiet stages, modelling rigs or smaller amps, electronic drums etc. Big gear that used to be a gigging staple like 8x10" or 2x15" bass cabs and guitar 4x12"s go for pocket money prices because very few still have a use for them, and there's a whole market for gear that imitates the cranked amps that used to be normal.
  7. Speakers need to be matched to their enclosure. With the neos. the cab could sound lovely or the speakers could just tear themselves to bits. Why buy a cabinet just to change the drivers? When you could just put together or have one made for you, a suitable box to mount the neos in? The manufacturer of the neos would probably have suitable plans for such an enclosure. It would be cheaper than this plan.

The price is very reasonable at £199 and Bass the World think it is good value: Personally I would have preferred a 38mm nut and 19mm bridge spacing to the 40mm and 20mm but at this price the bridge is easily fixed and 40mm is manageable for both P and Jazz bass fans.
  9. Being passive isn't the only factor - my Laklands are just more up my street, as I mentioned. It's still a lovely bass, but perhaps stands a better chance of being moved on unadulterated! 😉
  10. Oh my, I think the bass gods are really toying with me; I was looking out for a Tune 5-string a while back (I have the TWB-6 and a couple of the later Korean models). Sadly, funds won't currently allow me to go for it but I can certainly vouch for the quality of these basses. Absolutely! GLWTS. 👍😎👍

  12. For multi-band gigs the amount of backline on-stage can sometimes be over-excessive. Therefore the band with no backline can be at an advantage. Not only does my band plus all our gear, merch and roadie/merch seller fit comfortably into a single estate car, but we also fit comfortably on smaller stages where the headlining band have already used most of the space with their drum kit and amps. I've yet to come across the SE who insists on trying to make my bass indistinguishable mush. However my current bug-bear is with the SE who IMO wastes time trying to get the perfect gain structure on every channel on the PA for 3-4 entirely different bands. We're not trying to remake "Frampton Comes Alive" or even "The Who Live At Leeds" and need the highest signal to noise ratio possible. It's a gig in a small club with probably 200 people in the audience maximum. So long as nothing is overloading the channel input, it will be fine, and if it is they can always adjust the gain setting during the set and turn up the channel fader to compensate, It will all be over in less than 40 minutes and no-one on stage or FoH is going to be bothered with a tiny amount of extra hiss (if there even is any with todays modern digital desks and D-class PA amps) because the input gain was set a bit too low on a couple of channels.

  15. Thank you for the honest response and I did think the conversion from E-C to B-G might be a little problematic, especially with a comparatively narrow nut. However, the financial angle is probably more of an impediment to me at the moment. It’s a lovely looking bass and I know what Maruszczyk quality is like judging by my Elwood medium scale. GLWTS!

I remember that transition well - explaining to the bassist another band that I was really pleased with my purchase, but still getting used to the 12th fret not being where my muscle memory expected it to be! Congrats on a gorgeous new bass, I hope it continues to please at your next rehearsal.

  20. Saturday night was another dep gig. The Bonnevilles were the first band to play at The Beehive in Curdworth since the new manager came in about four months ago, sorted out by the new drummer. We got a spacious raised area to set up in, which was nice. And I got a couple of songs properly sorted that I'd had slight trouble with (not car crash type trouble, just stumbles). The newly acquired Zoom MS-60B+ made its first appearance. Sei Flamboyant 5 -> Lekato WS-90 -> Zoom MS-60B+ -> Tecamp Puma 900 -> GR Bass AT212. As always, Caravelle memory foam trainers.
  21. To be fair to Pirate, they are always quick to refund. If the room's not up to standard e.g. one of the channels on the mixer isn't working they'll give you 20% off and if something happens that means that you can't use the room - no power for example - and they can't shift you to another one you get a refund right away. What's frustrating is that it can take a lot of effort to organise a rehearsal and a few of you have traipsed to the venue so the money isn't the issue. But then, that's why they are cheaper than places that have someone on reception and a tech setting up the rooms and charge extra for backline. As much as I love DMC in Deptford they're often booked out and they are pricier than Pirate.

That`s a good point Simon, with my old band who I`m temping for at the moment we always organise gear-share so each band bring one bit of kit, as you say without it you can end up with a mountain of gear and with nowhere to store it. For me though, and as I say I like gigging with just a Sansamp or equivalent, I just keep coming back to the the thought that some bands may not be used to this, and their performance may suffer due to it.
