  2. @Kiwi, I didn't really have a brand in mind. You've covered the main ones. My view was totally bespoke neck to my own specs. I'd imagine that the Fender and MM necks will be the main thing for most people ordering. I remember playing your graphite necked series 1 Alembic when you gave me a lift to one of the bass Bashes and really liked it. Maybe we're past replacement necks here, but how about full basses a la Stienberger? Status Stealth or Buzzard? Full on one piece instruments? I've probably pushed the boat out too far there.

Roto swing stainless steels Sansamp BDDI (though I imagine any tubey pre will do) Both pups max Tone fully open And then playing with fingers and quite a low action, but just over the fretboard and quite aggressively (ala John Entwistle) so I can whack the strings off the board. I don't know what the HW bridges are like, but I have a few mm of the dreaded Ric tail lift nowadays. I can't be sure, but I put that down to the Roto's. I had them on it for 15+ years though and it's nothing that impacts playing.
  8. I started playing bass when I was 15. I got my first fretless when I was about 20, I think – pulled an 80s Yamaha from a literal heap of battered old instruments in a pawnbroker in Plymouth. I've always had a fretless and a fretted bass since then. I played fretless almost exclusively for a few years in my early/mid 20s, then set it aside for quite a long time because I couldn't get on with the instrument I had (a Warwick Corvette), but wasn't able to admit to myself that the new fretless I'd paid so much money for wasn't my thing. I made my own fretless bass about four years ago and have been playing that probably 60-70 percent of the time since. As an answer to a potential follow-up question – I prefer a lined fingerboard.
  9. Thank you. The most time consuming bit was the hand sanded oil finish on the body as it needed to dry between coats. I think I put about 10-15 coats on and I could get maybe 2 coats a day as well as monitoring for bleed back from the wood. I suspect there is a total of at least 10 hours actual work just in the body finish. I haven’t nitro or poly clear coated this one and just went with wax instead similar to a Warwick finish. Although it’s less tough, it is much easier to deal with any scratches, knocks or dinks in the long run as you just raise or sand the boo boo and then oil and wax. There is also a pleasure in a bit of periodic waxing.
  10. Many of you kindly contributed to my recent thread about motivating dep musicians. This is related, but a wee bit different. We have just done our first ever gig with a female singer - our fifth front person in three years, the others all blokes. We gave her maybe 65 per cent of the songs to sing: I did the rest. It went down well on the night. (Caveat: she has her own band and has not committed to us for any specific period.) Just had a call from the promoter of our next gig to advise me that he and a number of people there were not taken by the new female-fronted line-up. When pressed, he admitted he’d liked our ‘blokey’ image better. (Including a singer who could barely hold a tune compared to our new one!) My wife tactfully suggests we are now sounding ‘more commercial’, but will that win us enough new fans to make up for the stick in-the muds? Have any of you had to overcome resistance to change?

  14. Just as a comment: I am surprised how many people don't understand a bass with more than four strings. To me it just gives me more choices in finger positions. I did have three six string basses but on learning that my nephew plays bass, he's at Oxford, I sent him my newest six. He loves it. I now have just my original fretted six in white and my natural Koa wood fretless. I found that the standard J size pickups installed on the bass were a bit weak on the outer two strings so I replaced them all with EMG soap bars. That solved the problem. When I ordered the fretless that vast expanse of Ebony called a fingerboard scared me a bit so I had fret lines installed. The whole instrument is a dream to play!

Meet Scarlett - my Maruszczyk Frog 6-string fretless: She sounds as good as she looks... if you go to the BC Bands thread, there's a live video of my band in there, and I play it on a couple of the tunes. You can see a bit of her sister, Skye, next to her there - same, but fretted and with a blue colour scheme. I was the first person to specify a Frog with the ceruse-stained quilted ash, Delano Xtenders and coloured hardware. Based on what I've seen on their FB page, Adrian & co have made quite a few other ones since - I need to have a word and get him to call a Frog with that combination of features the Frog RW or something. Make it a signature bass.

  18. I never had a Traveler 102P. Before this setup I mainly used a CMD121P combo plus a NY112 extension cab. I much prefer the sound of the single 102 Energy cab to the old rig; feels a bit more open and round. The combo with the extension cab was plenty loud but could sometimes feel a bit oppressive at higher volumes. Plus the CMD121P had that annoying Markbass piezo horn hiss that you can’t unhear. No idea whether the MB102P cab has that issue (you’d hope not), but I went for the Energy one just in case and couldn’t be happier with it. The MB58R cabs are all very deep (front to back deep) so they do take up more room if space is a problem. They definitely don’t sound honky though.

No box, like new with velcro to base. 2x Source Audio SA168 midi adapters - £45 each. These allow the above pedals to accept midi control from non-Neuro Hub devices - unlock all presets and change parameters on the fly, use expression pedals etc. Morningstar MC3 - £160. Fully programmable midi control for your midi pedals and expression pedal. Boxed, minimal marks to powder coating, velcro to base otherwise like new. Works great as a set up with the above kit. Zoom MS-60B - £50. Boxed, like new, velcro to base. Roland EV-5 - £30. Boxed, never used, like new. Sonicake Vexpress - £20. Works great with HX Stomp etc, expression on a budget. Boxed, like new with velcro to base. Harley Benton Dyna Compressor - £10. Budget little compressor that works surpsingly well on bass. Velcro to bass. Lechnical RPB-1BK pedal board - £20. Great budget board with space inside for power and neat internal cable run system. 50 x 25 x 6 cm. Never used.
