The process I use is 1) 320 wet and dry 2) 600 wet and dry 3) 1500 wet and dry 4) Mini dremel-style multitool (chinese made) fitted with polishing felt disc and some buffing compound. It gets the frets mirror shiny but not as sparklingly mirror shiny as the best I've seen but it's good enough for me. The masking takes as long to do as the rest of the work so I've started using those metal slot guards instead. So far so good.

Hiss is normal. The source of the hiss is probably your signal chain. But if by hiss you actually mean hum, then there's a broken earth connection somewhere and you'll need to go through a process of elimination to isolate where between your fingers and the speaker the problem is.

Just found it also. Failed miserably already...two basses, guitar pedals and some guitar rack gear.

I was born in Fareham and grew up in Warsash until my family left for NZ. I've gone back there a few times over the years and very little has changed apart from more houses and less fields. Oh yes we do, but there's a separate forum for that...welcome aboard!

Just found this thread. Bought 2 basses and a neck in 2025. Might have to try in 2026.

Scary router bit arrived (a 50mm bottom bearing flush cutter) and I managed to trim the excess material from the neck pocket without maiming myself or the bass. Obviously some finishing off/shaping to do, but that's it started anyway.

I'm looking at this thread and wondering if I did the right thing today. I picked up a Yamaha RBX 170 for free this morning, the fretboard and frets were all mucky (and the jack socket hanging off as well!) so I used a damp cloth and a plastic scraper on the board and it came up lovely. I found some Pink Stuff cleaning paste in the kitchen and an old sock to apply it with and went to town on the frets. After that I cleaned up both the frets and board with Dunlop no 65 polish n cleaner then Fast Fretted it...after that I put on my shades as the frets were blinding me 😎 Once I'd done a little set up with new strings she sounds sweet, this bass is so light and the neck feels beautiful to play, I can't believe my luck! My nipper is learning bass so I've donated it to him...but I shall be picking her up now and then. Thoroughly recommend the Pink Stuff paste though 👍🏻

Folding stand recommendations please
tauzero replied to StingRayBoy42's topic in Accessories and Misc
There were a few suggestions in a thread that was in General Discussion. I don't think the Stagg that I recommended would be suitable for you as it doesn't fold down particularly small. -

What a cool room!

Wedge a mars bar under it. Or some guitarist-talent

I have two BF BBII cans and a Monaco. I usually use the Monaco, always through a PA and aim the cab at me and the drummer using a Standback amp/tilt stand. I even use it to my front/side as it is used as a monitor. It’s a fabulous cab. I use a Mesa + preamp, so can control the LF shelf if I get any boom issues. I also tend to play 5 strings more often than not and the cab copes easily. For reference, I’m running a Quilter 800 as a power amp. When I’m thumping my Doghouse, I do use a pair of BF BBII though, as they definitely take the abuse of slapping’ da beeass!

👍 I have students who play better than some of these. Maybe if they spent less time practicing trading flesh for likes but practicing their instruments instead … -

I'll be getting one at some point to replace my old Gear 4 Music 15w monster amp. I'd like something smaller for low volume practice when I'm sat on the sofa. Thomann has a 12- 15 week wait until restock.

Weird thing (to me) is that we have the same in the classical music world: some young people with enormous online presence and Wikipedia articles about them, and who travel the planet to give concerts ... and ... they can't play for the life of them. Sophomoric at best, and in fact I've had 1st year students play better than these. I think their visual appearances have something to say in this.

How was Your rehearsal last morning or night ?
WalMan replied to nilorius's topic in General Discussion
Hot one tonight minus one guitarist who had to go to see to a plumbing emergency at the London flat. Ran through a couple of new songs that are fine but not a lot for me to do other than AC/DC root note pedalling. Works for the song but … Annoyingly something more interesting I had suggested that I saw mentioned in the “how was your gig” thread and thought ooo we could do a good version of that - the Lillian Axe version of No Matter What - drew a load of blank stares and “never heard it”, so I guess that’s a No then 🤬 Got home and said to wifey “do you know this song” and she said “yes I love it and I’ve been telling you to do it for months” (not to my knowledge she hasn’t but that probably just proves I never listen) 🤦♂️🤷♂️
