Heartbreaking ! I saw his birthday in the paper the other day and couldn't believe he was 63. What a sad loss.

The Stone Roses were one of the most important bands of my life. I used to play along to Mani's bass lines in my childhood bedroom. 63 really isn't old. That's very sad.

I was looking at his tour as he was booked into a theatre near me. I was showing a work colleague about it only this morning. He will be missed, but will be well remembered.

Literally just saw this. Gutted. Probably the most quietly influential British bass player of the last 40 years.

 

There is no bass player in the UK of a certain age who didn't implicitly know the bass parts to Fool's Gold, She Bangs The Drums or Waterfall, or that bass break from I Am The Resurrection.

All four of the above will be getting blasted out on my Ric tonight. Albeit with way less finesse and talent than the man himself.

Our local arts centre was one of the venues he was coming to on his talk/tour he was going to do. I thought 'blimey, that's a big name to come to this little old town'.

 

I'm genuinely shocked.

Very sad to hear that, he was one of the players that got me interested in learning how to play.

This one in particular always stood out to me. What an incredible player he was.

Met him around the time of the stones reunion, he just mooched in to the shop, we spoke about neck dives on Jack Casady basses.

 

He was lovely.

This has made me genuinely feel empty inside. A real hero from my youth and a definite influence on me when I was around that age. The Roses purple patch produced what, to my taste, is some of the best and most evocative music and a lot of that was the bass riffs and how they worked in with Reni's drumming (this hi hats!) He even made Primal Scream sound decent for a while, which was no mean feat! I will be raising a glass tonight, and dusting off the old Roses songbook. RIP Mr Mountfield

Sad news - had the pleasure of briefly meeting him at Wembley at a Man Utd champions league final. Came across as a really decent bloke.

Started listening to his Rockonteurs interview just last night so hearing the sad news today after listening to him talking and in fine form was weird and unbelievable. Such sad news.

 

That Stone Roses debut album was epic and those basslines were a thing of beauty... I'll admit I shed a few tears on the way home listening to Adored, Resurrection and Fool's Gold on 6 music.

Mani was married to my partner's cousin and although I only met him a handful of times over the years he was always incredibly charming and humble.

 

He was kind and indulgent both when I was a slightly awestruck fan and when I had my own brief foray into not-quite the big time.

 

Such a fantastic musician, sharp dresser and hero to vertically challenged bassists the world over. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say a bad word about him.

 

Just over two years ago the whole family was in the room next to me celebrating my in-laws' 50th wedding anniversary - now Imelda, Mani and Imelda's mum are all gone. It's really sad here tonight.

I'm not too familiar with his work so I'll have to have a proper listen.

 

But I have one of his old Mesa BB750s as my main amp.
